WHO: Kitty Pryde and Peter Quill
WHAT: You're not what I remember
WHERE: Around town
WHEN: Today

Things had been relatively quiet after all the excitement of pokemon, or maybe because of them? People brought back new pets and were spending their time enjoying the new company she suspected, which was fine - she didn't mind quiet. It was just a little strange considering her life was usually one attack after another with barely a moment to catch her breath before there was some new crisis to take care of. But here she was now, living a sort of simple life, spending time with John, and just trying to figure out what she was going to do with herself.

Which made running into Peter just a little bit of a surprise - not a huge one maybe, she knew he was here of course, but she might not have been lying if she said she'd been avoiding him since she realized that he wasn't the Peter Quill she had known, it was strange to think of some other version of him - maybe because her Peter had existed in a sort of removed space in her life for some time now.

It was hard to explain really but there was a bit of a block in her mind.

And then she saw him, and though he didn't look quite like her Peter she recognized him. "Hey, Spaceman!" She called out, rather than giving into the desire to duck inside the nearest building just so she could go on fostering that strange feeling in the pit of her stomach when she saw him.

It was true, she didn't have a great many people here and watching over the few that were here felt a little like a futile act - when she could could the number of mutants in the world on one hand it didn't really feel like there was a lot she could do to keep any of them all that safe. Not in any real and meaningful way. But since it was what she did back home she found herself feeling like she needed to to it here too. As ridiculous as that idea may be.

"Ah, I teach Ethics, and Computer Science mostly." With the staff as transient as it could be they often picked up the slack taking on multiple subjects. "I also help training young mutants with their abilities." She explained, whether it was the original five, or the students from the academy - getting a grip on their powers, and the ability to work well in teams was important. Whether or not any of them truly wanted to be X-Men.

She couldn't imagine a story where a little animal like that carried around a skull that was had a happy ending, you know other than it being adopted by Peter. "Sometimes that's the way it is." She agreed, "It sounds like he's going to do well with you." It was strange, and seemed to move from vaguely normal to very strange as they continued talking, Kitty just couldn't really decide what it was talking to him like this.

"Are you still with the Guardians?" She asked, wondering just how similar this Peter was to her own.

Ethics. That seemed just so -- crazy. If he was right about what ethics were anyway, he was pretty sure it was about morality or...something. Not stabbing people just because it seemed like a good idea at the time. Whatever. Quill hadn't technically ever completed school past most of third grade, so the concept of teaching in that capacity was pretty wild. Kitty was clearly very smart.

He supposed that was a thing. Quill always did like that in a woman, it was practically a requisite that they were smarter than him. He'd gotten from context clues what a mutant was, but had to admit he'd never heard of one before now, which was pretty weird, considering he'd seen a little bit of everything in his lifetime. Was it rude to ask what people could do? He wasn't sure. Maybe he'd do it later, when they were less awkward.

"Yeah. Of course." Peter might have looked a teensy bit offended that she had to ask. "They're my family. So. Of course. Er. Except maybe right now. But that's not my fault and I'm hoping maybe the rest of them might show up here. Or we get out, I guess. But Gamora's here. And Nebula."

Yeah she knew what it sounded like, but to be honest she wasn't really interested in getting into the whole X-Men thing, at least not right now. It was all complicated, and the whole school thing even - all of it felt so far away here. They weren't living apart from everything here the way they did back in New York. Sure they'd moved into Central Park, but they still kept to themselves. Here though she could fit herself into this place, she could branch out and that pushed her old life just a little bit further away from where she was now.

She laughed just a little at that look he gave her at her question. "Well good, I'm glad to hear it. You belong with them." He'd taken a little bit of time away from them, decided that he belonged somewhere else for a time when she had known him and they'd felt the loss of him. Peter belonged with the Guardians, in a way that she hadn't quite fit.

"You'll figure it out. You always do." She assured him, she was surprised to hear about Nebula a little less when it came to Gamora though, "Just remember that, Space Man. They're your family, you belong with them." He seemed to get that though, he probably didn't need her telling him what he already knew, but she couldn't help it.

Quill didn't know why he liked the moniker of Space Man as much as he did but -- well. He just did. It tickled him a bit, but also reminded him that yes, where he was from these days wasn't Earth, and it hadn't been for a long, long time. Even when he'd ended up there with the whole Thanos thing, he hadn't wanted to stay. It wasn't his anymore, not the way it used to be. He still loved the movies and the music and the -- well. Maybe the memory of the place? But Space? That was Quill's.

"I know," he said, but it wasn't smarmy or anything, it was just a fond acknowledgement. He knew what family was about now, and had for a while if he was being honest. Somewhere between killing his father who had been a planet and Yondu and arguing with Rocket. And Gamora -- Gamora telling him that she loved him, more than anything.

It wasn't right to ask probably, but he did it anyway. "I gotta know," he said, a little awkwardly. "Was -- Gamora. She was there, right? Were we---?"

Kitty liked seeing him so sure of his place, it was something that her Quill sometimes lacked, not in a way that made him seem weak - just like he was searching for something and wasn't always entirely sure that he'd found it. He'd looked at her like that too - like maybe she had been what he was looking for. And for a while she'd believed it too, that she was that thing he'd been seeking in all the universe, but in time she'd seen that wasn't entirely true. Not in the way she'd needed it to be.

And then he asked about Gamora and she was a little surprised, not that he was curious whether or not that she was there, but the implication that he didn't actually say - whether or not they were anything. "She was there, she moved around a lot actually, did her own thing - she was with us for a while and then after the Black Vortex she left to find Thanos and kill him on her own." Quill had gone after that as well, to give into the Spartax's desire that he be the new emperor. "We found her again just before I came back to Earth with you, she came with us but -"

It was a lot, and really it wasn't something that he'd done, that he would do by the sounds of it, but it was probably better that he knew at least. "She found out that you knew the Avengers were holding Thanos and she left the Guardians again. I don't think you two have ever-" She held out a hand as she lifted her shoulders in a slight shrug, "If you have it's not something anyone told me about. And it's been a little while since I traveled with the Guardians, things might be different now too."

He hadn't always been so confident, not really. But the Guardians had gone through some really important shit together, and they'd learned and grown as individuals and as a unit. They didn't always act like it, but it was true. They loved each other, even if sometimes they didn't like each other.

Most of the stuff Kitty was talking about, he didn't really get. He wouldn't lie about that, and she probably knew it anyway. The Black Vortex didn't ring a bell, and there'd be no point ever that he'd kind that kind of truth from Gamora but --

"Huh." he said, because of all the people on the team, Gamora was usually the least likely to leave and go do things on her own. She stayed with him. But maybe that wasn't a thing, if they weren't. Well. Whatever they were.

"Well. That's okay. Different timelines, different people," he decided although, frankly, it stung a little bit to know it.

It looked like he took the reality of her world kind of hard and she almost wished that she hadn't told him - just told him what he'd wanted to hear, because it was obvious looking at him now that he wanted to know that he and Gamora were a thing in some other universe as well. Even like this, a different person than her Peter, she wanted to to help him some.

She nodded though. "You're right, different people, different timelines - it's strange to find out that you don't exist in some worlds, or that we never met in others." She gave him a small smile. It had stung that first day when they'd talked, when she realized he didn't know her. But they were from different worlds, she couldn't expect the same from him as she would have from her Peter.

"Just remember that where your from and the people from your universe are the most important." She told him gently. "Not what we've done where I'm from."

Yeah. It probably couldn't have been any more fun for her that last time they talked. Or, well, maybe even still now. The best way to deal with it was by just being in the present anyway, so -- well. There wasn't that much to worry about, really. At least, not on that topic.

"Yeah, I know. You too, obviously. Not that I'm not important, because I totally am," the face he made was an attempt at innocence that only came off as playful. "And so are you,' he said more seriously. "just now instead of before. It works out."

He glanced over his shoulder the, only to find his Cubone had completely disappeared from sight. "So, uh, not to cut short or anything, but--"
