They'd been friends before, Steve had taught Tony to fight with his hands not just his suit and Tony had taught him more than he could name. There had been times when Tony had happily eaten the boring dinner Steve had cooked, a stew like his mother had once cooked and they'd sat together talking for hours. But there were things that had come between that friendship, secrets and half truths had a way of ruining things that were good, Steve knew that now better than ever.
There was something about being there together, without Bucky, Natasha and Rhodey or the others that meant they'd fallen into sync. They were the team, the team was them and it had always worked brilliantly like that. Home needed to be safe, so they'd made one together, it just made sense.
"I feel like I should get a few empty houses ready for people, give them a start," Steve said quietly. "Just in case we get some less capable folk any time soon." There could be families, or young people, Steve didn't want to have nowhere safe and clean for them.
He paused as he watched Tony in the half light, if he couldn't find a way back or figure it out, it didn't exist. Sure if someone else wanted to give it a go, but that was good enough for Steve. "It's in my nature to try to build something wherever I am," he finally said with a little smile.
