Putting up a front, a brave face, was something that Remus knew Sirius could do very well. He'd seen it before, and he'd told Sirius that he never had to do that with him. He wanted Sirius to always feel he could be whatever version of himself he was at any given time. Whatever he was feeling, he could feel it around Remus. If he was in a shit mood, then he could be sour around him. If he was gleeful, then Remus would love to see him smile. If he was irritated, joyful, hyper, lazy, anything and everything else, then that was fine. Remus would be there for him in whatever capacity Sirius needed at any given moment. That had been the understanding. That was how it always was. But right now, maybe a front was needed from both of them. They'd both just cried their hearts out. There wasn't anything that was going to make the situation better. They just had to deal with it. Otherwise they were going to be kneeling there on the ground forever, sobbing.
The response Sirius gave him was so Sirius. It was exactly what Remus needed, and undoubtedly Sirius knew that. He could appreciate what he was doing. Remus took that lifeline and clung to it. Sirius Black had always been his truest, most perfect source of comfort. Selfish as he felt to indulge in it, he just needed it. He needed a break; a moment to stop feeling so horribly sad. Even though he was still sad, he could try to feel a little something else, too. It didn't bring James, Lily or Peter back, it didn't free Sirius from Azkaban, but it gave him a few second of reprieve. He'd take what he could get right now.
"Yes, in fact, I have," he replied. His voice was a little hoarse, but he too, forced a bit of a smile. Damn, he'd missed those dimples. There was a sincerity to it, but it'd been a long time since he'd last used his smiling muscles. "They're my favorite dimples."
Since Sirius was trying, Remus was going to try too. He lifted his hands, and ever so gently brushed his thumbs over the curved lines of those dimples, then upward to brush away a bit of mud and what was left of Sirius' tears.
