"That's probably a more normal response to things and looking for a way to help." Barbara agreed when Peter told them that he'd considered volunteering like his aunt had done. "Dick is right though, Gotham is different than most places, it breeds darkness trauma, and sometimes the only way to fix that is to put on a mask and kick it's ass, even if you are just a kid."
She smiled as Peter talked about being a nerd from Queens, she could understand that easily enough. Maybe if things had been different she'd have been kind of the same, just a girl too smart for her own good and trying to change the world through clean energy or something like that. Sure she did that too, but she got to do so much more than that as well because of where they came from.
"Seeing Bruce do what he did when I was younger, it inspired me. I wanted to feel strong like that too, making my own costume felt right, and getting out there on my own was good too - I'm lucky that Bruce took me under his wing, that this guy decided to follow me around like a creep for a while. I don't think I'd be here now if it wasn't for them helping me out in those early years."
