"Bruce paid for all my injuries, yes, but he adopted me so of course he would. And we have friends in hospitals who treat the masks and keep our identities safe. Plus you've seen my uniform now. I'm much better protected than I used to be."
He nodded as Babs spoke. "Gotham's a different beast to most places," he said almost somberly. "There's still light in New York, y'know? Most days it doesn't feel like there is in Gotham. The sun comes out like it does anywhere else, but too often it ends up feeling more like dread than hope. Most of the masks in Gotham are just regular folks who looked at those odds and decided that helping was better than cowering. Sometimes we get it right. Sometimes we don't. Sometimes we make it through without a scratch and others we take a real hard landing."
He gave her a very long look before turning his attention to Peter. "At the end of the day, we've got each others' backs. None of us really has to carry that weight alone. Doesn't stop us from trying, but family is family."
