Clint Barton is going back to bed. ([info]today_sucks) wrote in [info]snapthread,

WHO: Clint Barton (616) and Kate Bishop
WHAT: Exploring the house.
WHERE: Alternate dimension, ending up in weird France?
WHEN: Feb 25, their time.
RATING: Low

Alright. While Captain America’s method of feeding everyone was good — great even — Clint kinda figured if they were gonna stay here he probably ought to have been helping as well. Waiting around for live animals while sitting in the trees with his bow and arrow wasn’t his idea of a great time though, and he’d gotten bored well before anything had shown up.

So now he was snooping around a bit more, waiting to uncover something good, or important or — whatever. Something. That Kate was by his side only made it better though, because at least now he could prove that he’d done more than sleep today and also he had someone to complain with.

“I dunno,” he was saying, thoughtfully. “The woods don’t go all that far out and then everything kinda just — stops? Does that make sense? Like, you can’t go further after a certain point. Everything just kinda loops around again and you’re back where you started. And that wasn’t just me getting lost, you know I don’t do stuff like that. Usually.” He paused, fingers fiddling with the string of his bow. “Hey, have we gone in that house yet?” It was at the edge of everything and didn’t look particularly inhabited. How hadn’t he noticed it before?

Kate was leaning against the trunk of the tree, her feet braced on the branch she was sitting on. This. Was. BORING. They hadn't seen anything for a bit and Kate was ready to start chucking acorns at squirrels. Well, not really 'cause that was mean, but the thought was tempting. They'd shoot down one tree and right back up, quick little buggers. She was contemplating if she should go for the one a few trees over when Clint started talking.

She doubted that 'usually', but not on his observations of their new little world. It was weird and a little creepy. The town looked cute, almost TOO cute for being as deserted as it was. Clint hadn't been wrong in that either...it seemed they were stuck here in this newly painted, empty town and it caused Kate to get existential. Was this heaven? It couldn't be hell because...well, it wasn't THAT terrible.

She glanced where he was looking and frowned. "No, I don't think so. I don't remember it at least?" She looked back at him.

"Race you there!" And she was off.

Oh, it wasn't that terrible now, sure. But maybe that was the kinda hell it was. Time would pass and they'd all get stir crazy and then they'd all go insane or try to reenact the scary scenes from the Lord of the Flies. Or something.

Not that he'd been thinking about it too much. Well. Maybe only a little.

Racing? Racing he could do, and he practically launched out of the tree he'd been sitting in, only to do a stupid somersault forward roll that didn't speed him up any in order to catch up with Kate on the way there.

But that was fine. It was good exercise, if nothing else.

When he caught up, it was at the entrance of the house in question. It just had a weird feeling coming off of it. Like. Clint wasn't sure what, actually. But it reminded him a little bit of walking into a dark room and realizing the tv was still on but had gone dark, too. Just. Something a little electric.

"Weird." Kate stood in front of the building, looking up at it. It didn't seem that much different than the rest of the town, except it was so detached from the rest of the buildings. She probably got the same feeling that Clint did as she absently rubbed her arms, walking over to peek into the windows.

"Looks like all the other buildings," she reported, cupping around her eyes to block the sun. "Empty." But it felt different. If Kate had actually thought about it, she wouldn't be able to pinpoint what actually felt off about the place, but it made her heart pump faster.

Her hand was already on the doorknob as she glanced at Clint, raising her shoulders in a small shrug as if to say 'why not?' Maybe there was something upstairs they could smuggle and find. At least they had their weapons in case anything weird happened. Kate didn't really want to think about what that might be and thought remaining positive would help in this situation.

Coffee...coffee...COFFEE She was on day three of no caffeinated drink and she felt like she had developed a tick in her lower right eye.

"Weird," Clint repeated, but then went ahead and slipped through the door when Kate opened it anyway.

The place was -- empty. In a weird way. Just. There was nothing in the room but hardwood floors and more doors. So Clint glanced back at Kate, rose a questioning eyebrow and then shrugged and moved to the first door within reach.

When he opened it, there was a field behind the door. Clint blinked. Closed the door. And then opened it again. And this time, there was a dark, rainy street waiting for them.

"Okay," he said, a little dazed. "That's not what I was expecting at all."

Kate stood on her tiptoes behind him, trying to glance over his shoulder as he opened the door. "What!? Wait!" Kate looked at Clint as he closed the door, frowning. When he opened it again, she was able to hear and smell the rain before she actually saw it.

"Is it raining in that room?" But that couldn't be right. Because why and how? And she was probably going crazy (is that what was wrong with this building? It drove people crazy?), but had she seen grass the first time he had opened the room?

"Maybe we shouldn't be here."

"Yeah." It was definitely raining. Clint closed the door again, because -- well. It was disconcerting. Also he didn't really wanna step out into the rain. It seemed like a bad choice - stepping out into a dark, wet alley. Like the intro to a horror movie, or something.

Not like this room -- this entire house wasn't, too, but still.

"No," he agreed. "We probably shouldn't be here." But he opened the door again anyway. And this time, it opened up to a sunny street, cobblestone and across the way a group of little tables with umbrellas for the sun.

It was ... inviting.

"I think we should explore."

"Wow, that was the fastest turn of opinion!" Kate folded her arms across her chest and looked from him to the open door. There was something more pleasant about this new...room. World? Ugh, she didn't want to think about it; multiverses hurt her head, so she had become used to just accepting it as it was. She had a feeling she'd have to do the same with this place.

"But alright. I'm in." At least they had their bows if this wasn't going to be all it was cracked up to be.

"You go first," she insisted. Despite the more cheery disposition of the place, Kate wasn't about to take the first step; she'd allow Clint that honor instead.

Sure, multiverses were headache inducing but -- well. At least they had some experiences with them. A little. Not really like this, but at least the concept wasn't so fresh that their heads were about to explode or something.

Clint was, if nothing else, happy he had decided to leave Lucky at home for the time being. If home was the right word to be using.

He shrugged, and then stepped through the door.

The weather was different. The air smelled different, too. It just... was different. "Alright," he said. "I didn't die or disappear. You next. But leave that door open. I don't wanna see what happens if we close it behind us."

He kept walking down the little street so that he couldn't change his mind. This could be good. They could figure out where this was. Maybe get some supplies.

Clint was just talking about keeping the door open when it shut behind her and Kate glanced from it to him. He didn't seem to notice as he kept walking down the street and he seemed so interested in his surroundings she couldn't bring herself to tell him. They'd figure something out. Or maybe they found a way to escape! Maybe he'd end up thanking her in the long run! Yeah, that's it, exactly. She jogged to catch up with him.

There was something uncannily pleasant about this place and Kate would have been suspicious if she hadn't felt so content. The sun was warm, there was a sweet smell drifting on the breeze, and there seemed to be cute shops around there. "Does this place look familiar to you?" She realized it did to her as she was asking Clint the question. "I think I've been here before..."

She stopped as she glanced down a street, something pulling at the back of her mind. "Oh, yes!" She laughed and ran down the road, almost tripping on one of the stones, assuming Clint would follow after. She hoped she was right in remembering.

She turned the corner and sure enough, there it was. "A CAFE!" She glanced up Clint as he caught up. "Is this a dream?" She reached over and pinched him.

Yeah. Probably for the best he didn't see. But it was fine. They'd figure it out later. Or get stuck here forever. Whichever came first.

"You've been?" He asked, with a squinted, but turned around in a wide circle to take in the skyline and more than just the cozy street they were walking down. "Is...that the Eiffel Tower?"

Yeah. He'd been here before too.

Mind, he was immediately distracted by the cafe in question and he damn near just took her hand and dragged her the rest of the way over. Everything else could wait.

They
needed
coffee.

He bought two with the american money that they decided was good enough. Strong, European style americanos. And he was practically jittering before they even handed them over.

Kate didn't question that Clint had money in his pocket that they readily accepted, but sat down, cupping her coffee between both her hands and bringing it up for her to take a deep breath of. "This is heaven. Did we die when we stepped over? Was that literally the doorway to heaven?" She took a sip and almost groaned. "I'm so happy I could cry Clint!" She looked over at him, sure she would see a similar reaction from him.

Having gained a significant boost in morale, Kate took in her surroundings. "Real France?" Everything seemed normal at least. No lizard people or weird dystopia feeling to it. "Do you think we made it back home?" Could they go find the nearest airport and get a plane ticket home? And what did that mean for the people back at home? Kate immediately thought of America and knew she wouldn't be able to test that theory.

"Man, this is just gonna be a bad withdrawal," she whined, looking down at her almost empty cup. "Being able to have something so pure and then just take it away from us." She swirled her cup and drank the rest of it.

"It isn't fair."

"I always thought that there was a stairway to heaven," Clint said, because he was old enough for that to still be a good joke. But yeah, he was pretty damned happy with the coffee. Part of him wanted to toss it all back in one go but he also thought maybe he ought to savor it because when would he get another chance to have something like this?

"I dunno if it's real," he said after a moment of sniffing and sipping and making totally unacceptable noises over it in public. "We could get a newspaper or try and find a computer. See what the news looks like here?"

But first, this coffee. And yeah, Kate had a point. "Very unfair," he agreed, and sounded a little bit like a kicked puppy over it.

There were moments that Kate questioned Clint's ability to take care of himself and then there were moments he'd come up with common sense thinking like that, no matter the pressure of the situation, and impress her. She gave him an impressed look, considering the idea. "Nice. We'll have to see if we can find something!" But for now...coffee.

She took another sip of hers, realizing how close to finishing it she was. "You wouldn't happen to have more money for just oooooooonnnne more cup?" She bounced in her chair, a combination of the caffeine now coursing through her veins and her hopefulness of more coffee. "I didn't even realize you had money! I don't have anything." Not that her current situation was much different than if she had been back home.

To be fair, Clint was mostly self sufficient. He'd done plenty fine before Kate had come around in situations much worse than these.

He just... got sort of low sometimes and forgot to care, or even think about caring.

"Hopefully it's not all in french," he groused. "I haven't had to speak or read french in forever. I've forgotten half of it by now." Well, not really. But he was kind of rusty.

"And yeah. Well. I have pockets?" So he had his wallet. He wasn't rich but he wasn't like... completely penniless either. He pulled another bill out of his wallet and pushed it at her across the cute little french table. "Your turn to get it."

"We'll figure it out," she said, not too worried about it. She felt fairly confident they could come out with a few sentences between the two of them. She was more concerned with the fact that of course Clint had pockets that he could fit a wallet in, and she realized this wasn't the time to be jealous that women's clothing were so impractical. No, she concentrated on the bill he slid across the table and she happily picked it up, raising her hand into the air.

"Excusez-moi, deux cafés s'il vous plaît." She happily gave the bill to the waiter that came over, sliding down in her chair as he walked away, closing her eyes. This was perfect. While she wasn't going to try and stay here forever, she could enjoy their time back home for a little while longer.

"If only we had one of these back at the village." She cracked an eye open to look at him. "Would help it make it feel a bit more...normal?" At least it was a step.

If Kate had chosen the practicality of tac pants over a suit with inexplicable holes in the thighs, she might very well have had pockets too. But hey, he used to wear what had been effectively a purple skirt, so it wasn't like he could say much.

Admittedly, Kate did look very much at home here. Where there was coffee and proper power and people who had presumably chosen to be where they were currently. But mostly coffee. "Yeah," he agreed, mulling over the thought, a new concept that was probably not going to stop biting at his brain now that she'd made such a good point. "It would be nice. After this cup, let's check out those paper, huh?"

It turned out, after another two (TWO!) cups of coffee and then some searching for an internet cafe or just a place where people didn't give them a dirty eye for trying to read a paper for free that this was not, in fact, their world. There seemed to be Avenger's in existence at all, which was kinda... well. Depressing, maybe?

Something like that.

Anyway, with their heads not held all that high, they reoriented themselves from walking around the city by making their way back to the cafe.

"Just one more cup," she said, her feet dragging in a sort of upset. They hadn't really learned anything useful here and Kate's mind seemed to be more focused on her caffeine intake than strategically looking for things they could take back with them. "Two more cups and I guess we should head back and look for the door." She finally remembered that it had closed and she stopped for a moment, watching as Clint walked ahead of her. "Uh...which, by the way, I may have kinda sorta forgotten to tell you, but when you were telling me to leave the door open? It kinda sorta shut by itself." It was the truth, but it didn't help that she was telling him so late in the game.

"But! I'll buy you THREE cups of coffee! If...you have that much I can borrow!" She gave him a pleading look. "I'll pay you back when we get back to the town!"

Clint paused and looked over at her, sort of aghast. "You closed it? You weren't supposed to close it. We don't know if it opens again. We could be stuck here. In fake France!"

Mind, they'd have a lot of coffee, but that didn't seem like the biggest selling point because they weren't supposed to be here.

Okay. He took a deep breath. They'd just have to hope it'd open. Until then they could think about... about coffee.

And maybe, just maybe, the onset of panic made him a little reckless. "What if," he said slowly, "What if we took the coffee with us?"

She held her hands up in surrender. "I swear I didn't close it! You were just telling me to keep it open when it shut on itself!" She kept one hand up and crossed her heart with the other. "Promise!" She wasn't really worried; she was sure they would figure something out!

Eventually.

"What? Like...order it to go?"

Well, Clint kind of figured she should be a little worried about it at least. He wasn't sure he wanted to have to get a job or an apartment in fake france. If you lived in fake France but were obviously American did you have to go get a fake visa? It was all very complicated. Clint didn't want to deal with it.

He instead considered the cafe instead and through the window the espresso machine behind the counter. "No," he said slowly. "Like. Just having it. Machine and all."

Whoa. That was a new idea. They had just made it back to the cafe and she glanced at the machine then back at Clint. "What, like...steal it?" she whispered, her mind running through all the scenarios. Yes, they'd have their own coffee in the weird little town. Wait, would they? Did they have the hook up for that? Just some water, there's the well you know. Right. Ok. So now for the most important question.

"How are we going to take it?" And more importantly, wouldn't they need a few things? Beans, cups?

"Sure," Clint said, a little surprised at his own moral compass just about now. "But like, in a robin hood way. They have more than one and we have none. We're practically just...giving to the poor." They could figure out the way to get it working eventually. They had two Tony Starks living in Starklandia. If no one figured out hot running water soon, it'd be a complete travesty.

"Okay," he said after a moment's thought. "Here's the plan--"

He outlined it. It had to do with Kate distracting, Clint grabbing and then the two of them running with a very heavy thing as quickly as they could.

Simple, but effective.
