WHO: Everyone who wants to drown their sorrows or something
WHAT: Getting drunk about it
WHERE: The Spider-Web
WHEN: Today

Sure waking up to find that he was for some reason attached to a wizard nearly half his age hadn't been on the top ten best ways to start his day list that Peter most certainly did not keep somewhere in the back of his mind, it hadn't actually been on the top ten worst ways to start his day list either. So that was something to consider. Not that it made it any easier to deal with knowing that for some strange reason he found himself tethered to Sirius, things had gotten very strange very quickly, and considering his history with strange well - Peter thought he was handling the whole thing admirably.

Tonight though, well they were at the bar, because even tied together like this people still needed to eat and Peter wasn't about to just throw all of this away because he was mildly inconvenienced. So he was doing his best, passing out drinks and making food and hoping that at the very least, they could all just spend a little time there that evening and pretend like things weren't entirely fucked.

"Nothing like a couple of drinks and something good to eat to at least help make you feel like things aren't quite as bad as they might seem." And certainly he'd lucked out he thought, but like John had said, things could always be worse.

"Maybe, what I'm thinking might get me into trouble," Bill said with a little shrug. Because flirting was easy, it was a natural state of being and it came easy to him, kept the attention right where he liked it.

It was strange, in the past when he'd practiced this sort of magic when someone had read his mind it had been more forceful. With Dan it was almost gentle and Bill resisted it easily. He wondered if he'd be able to if he was more forceful, because while Bill had practice it wasn't with someone who was exceptionally skilled with it.

When the other man blushed Bill couldn't help feel like he was reasonably harmless. Because really, could someone who wasn't have such pink cheeks over being called pretty? Dan wasn't the only sober person Bill knew, he had hidden away a great deal of Klause's cocaine after all and Bill was familiar with the type. "First step is admitting you have a problem, looks like you've got that one covered," Bill said gently.

The ice sloshed in Dan's glass, and he kept a firm grip on it - he could practically smell the booze, mixed and poured and even wafting from the pores of drunk patrons, or at least, patrons who were well on their way there. His stomach churned, the headache throbbed violently against his skull - he was tempted, always tempted. And he didn't have the AA chip in his pocket, to touch with his fingers reminding him who he was. It must have gotten lost in the shuffle, between luring Rose to the Overlook and then...dying.

"I had a good sponsor," he said, with a small little smile. He missed Billy. Probably always would. A friend whose response was 'okay, sure' when you told him you needed to drive miles and miles to dig up a dead body and then go attack a cult of psychic vampires was a friend to keep. And yet he was dead now, like Dan was supposed to be.

But anyway. Glacial eyes shifted toward this Bill, fingers tapping against the side of that half-drunk soda. "So are you going to tell me about yourself?" he asked. The flirty stuff was...nice, he guessed (and Bill probably got a lot of response to it, looking the way he did) but Dan was more interested in the cupcake filling rather than merely the frosting. "Since you don't want me to look."

Dan didn't look like he was having the best time, actually he reminded Bill a little of Richie when he'd arrived. A live wire crossed with a wounded animal. Bill could see pain there and whether it was physical or mental, well it was probably a little of both.

Now honestly Bill would have been quick to tell Dan and anyone who might listen that he was all frosting, from here to wherever they might want he was frosting. But they were playing introductions and Bill had clearly stopped Dan's usual get to know you technique. "I'm a wizard from Surrey, been here longer than some, not as long as others," he explained. "I tend to the gardens here, both food and the magical variety, so if you need a tomato or a dreamless sleep potion, then I'm your man."

Dan was holding that glass like it held all the secrets of the world and yeah a bar probably wasn't a great place for a former drunk. But that's where everyone was tonight.

"Interesting," Dan remarked. He hadn't known there were gardens here - but then again, he hadn't really found a chance to explore much. Mostly he was just trying to wrap his mind around this whole thing, knowing that he was literally a dimension apart from Abra.

He couldn't contact her. He'd already tried - she had some Shine even more powerful than his, but when he reached out, he only heard silence where she would normally be. And he hadn't wanted to push too hard, because if he did the dam would burst and all the thoughts of everyone in town would rush in, a droning buzz of bees and whiplashes of actual pain; at that point, it would be just noise and he wasn't equipped to deal with it right now.

But, welp. Sorry your new guy date was a real fuckin' downer, Bill. "I might need a tomato, I guess you never know when you need it to throw at someone making a bad joke," he teased, and did he mention he also wasn't funny? "...wizard though?"

Guess that was what he sensed. Magic and the Shine, they were probably distant cousins anyway.

Bill had a habit of that here, picking dates who were so far from wanting to be on a date that crying was a real possibility. But after their terrible not-date he and Richie had ended up friends so he wasn't about to question his methods yet, seeing as they seemed to be working just fine.

"I'll show you where I keep the ones past their prime," Bill said and he even smiled because he was nice even if Dan's joke hardly even qualified. "Wand carrying, potion brewing, spell casting wizard." Maybe he should have kept it to himself like they did back home, keeping muggles from finding out about them. But there was so many people here who were different there didn't seem to be a point.

Better to use his magic and keep the garden producing and risk getting burned at the stake. "So you aren't one?"

Dan's jokes never qualified, but Bill was sweet. Real sweet - to humor a washed up hermit whose only company the past eight years had been a cat, sitting in his lap, darting off occasionally to perch upon the bed of the person who would be next to walk into the light. Azzie was good company however, while Dan worked and heard thoughts that filtered in and out, like his mind was a sieve - homes he'd never lived in, grandchildren he'd never have, vacations he never took.

"No. We call it the Shining, where I'm from," he said, folding his arms on the bartop and leaning in more so whomever the person Bill was tethered to didn't have to strain on their end. Kind of weird to picture, two people inching along, connected by an invisible rubber band that could snap back. "It's - something you're born with. I didn't know what it was at first though, when I was a kid. No one believed me about it. You're born with magic?"

He and Gwen were doing pretty well trying not to drive each other crazy. Bill didn't want to get too far from her and risk her hurting herself if she took a step, which was probably for the best because if he'd been free to get into Dan's personal space things might have gone from tense to awkward in three seconds flat. Not that Bill disregarded social ques or would have made him uncomfortable on purpose but he probably would have tried his luck.

"We're born with magic, although when you're young it just kind of comes out when you're feeling something extreme. Then you have to learn to control it," Bill explained as he slid his wand free, spinning it easily in his fingers. "This helps, a wand chooses a wizard and then your magic is easier to channel," he said.

An actual magic wand, that was something else. Dan had never really seen anything like that before - oh sure, maybe with magicians and their stage shows. Silk scarves and slight of hand tricks, rabbits from the hat, and a disappearing act using old, tattered, antique-looking cabinets - when he was a kid, he may have had a magic wand too, but it was something ordered from a catalogue. Clearly nothing real.

"So it must be very personal to you - if the wand chooses the wizard," he surmised, pale blue eyes falling to take in the shape and look of what Bill held in his hands. "Here - is it dangerous? Have you had to fight using it?"

He kind of wanted to know what he'd been dropped into. If he needed to be wary.

Bill had seen some of the muggle charlatans, some pretending they had some kind of magic, others just using it as a stage show. It wasn't like the real thing but it wasn't like he took any offence. It was still strange explaining magic to muggles but Dan seemed to know a little more than some.

"It is, but I don't mind sharing with the right person," Bill told him with a little smile. Klaus had his own wand now, but before that Bill had been happy to let him practice with his. "Here? No, not in the town. Through the doors yes, back home yes, but here things are peaceful mostly." Sure there was Richie and that weird gent but that wasn't a regular occurrence.

"I promise to keep an eye on you," he said as he leaned a little closer.

Dan wasn't even sure he knew what peaceful was. It was a nice thought, however. Despite that, he knew that no matter where he was, where anyone was, demons and monsters - inner or otherwise - they always came back for you. "Back home for me too," he said. "Well - it was pretty messy, anyway. Still, I'll take this. It's better than being dead."

Even if he was currently sitting in a bar and there were lots of canoodling couples around, people knocking back beverages that once would have made his mouth water in craving. Now, his stomach just churned.

"An eye on me? Guess I'm going to have to keep an eye on you too," he smirked lightly. "I should...go. For now though." He'd exceeded his fifteen minute limit in the bar, and more would be pushing it. "But I'm sure I'll see you around. You can show off what your wand can do."

That sounded bad.
