"That's them, but we dealt with it, they didn't see Tony coming, that was for sure," Steve said and the pride was warm in his voice.
"That was the name of his project, The Avengers Initiative," Steve explained. The thing with Fury was there was always more than what was on the surface, he was a man with a number of plans and he played everyone, telling them when he wanted them to know. It was for the perceived greater good but it hadn't gone all that well, but Steve could relate to that.
They were putting things together now, Fury had clearly had the idea after meeting Carol and seeing what she could do. When the Chitauri had come to earth they'd handled it, as a team and Steve was proud of that, but Thanos? Well it hadn't seemed to matter how many of them there was, it hadn't been enough.
"I guess he named us after you then," Steve said with a little smile. "At the very least you qualify for membership, so welcome aboard I guess." What had happened was terrible and it felt like everything was his own fault, his responsibility. But at that point in time, in that place, there wasn't much they could do.
