Steve looked back at what they'd become, estranged, lost and he never wanted that again. They'd worked through so much and Steve loved him, he wanted to share this unknown future with him, if they stayed here or went back he wanted to do it together. Despite Tony's assurances that Pepper wouldn't mind, although Steve believed him it was still difficult to understand. How could anyone who had Tony ever let him go?
The reassurances from Tony that his would say yes weren't lost on him and he smiled gratefully. "I hope so," he said softly. Because only when he'd agreed and the ring was on his finger would Steve believe it, maybe not even then.
"There's no hurry on this, I still have no idea how or when I'll ask," Steve said with a little shrug. He knew the right time would present itself and he knew he needed the ring so he was ready to take advantage of it. Sure he'd probably carry it around in his pocket endlessly but it would pay off.
