Who: Wee Steve and Baby Gwen
What: Skinned knees
Where: Outside their house
When: October 7

Steve took looking after Gwen very, very seriously. It wasn't the sort of job you could do while you read a comic because Gwen was special, she was everywhere and climbing the walls and upside-down and Steve's hands were very full. But he could do this, he was very responsible.

When he'd seen her he hadn't known her, but he had. She was important, very important, the most important and Steve had to look after her and protect her. So he couldn't go and play, because he was watching her and Steve didn't take his eyes off of her for even a moment. Which means he saw it all.

One second she'd been fine and then it was like slow motion and she was falling. Steve raced over to where she fell, kneeling down in front of her. "It's okay, sweetie, I'm here," Steve told her incredibly seriously.

Gwen didn't really understand why she could do the things she could do now. She'd always been a pretty active child with a tendency to get into things especially when she wasn't supposed to. But she'd never been able to climb walls before! Not just shelves, but actual walls! And the ceiling! She was supposed to be careful and not go too high because sometimes sticking to the walls stopped working and that could be bad. But it was fun and it kept her from getting bored so yes, she was climbing more and higher than she probably should.

The people that lived in the house with her were all important people. She still didn't really remember much but what she did remember was that she loved them and for her, that was really all it took. She loved playing with Mr. Stark and with Steve.

She'd decided that it was time to climb outside on the side of the house because she'd already crawled all over pretty much every inch of the inside. It was a rule she wasn't supposed to go higher than the windows but she did, and then the sticking thing stopped working and she fell. Down, down, down -- splat. And with falling came scraped knees and a scraped elbow and tears in her eyes. Her lip was quivering but she was trying to be brave. "Steve!" So much for that. She pretty much attached herself to him and sniffled a lot.

Steve had never felt so guilty in his life. She'd fallen and it was his fault. He was supposed to look after her, to make sure nothing happened to her. There was a thick feeling in his throat and he swallowed hard, he wasn't going to cry, no he needed to look after her. He took a quick look, there were no wrists at sharp angles or anything dangerous, just a couple of scratched looking knees and a elbow that needed a kiss.

He scooped her into his lap, because he couldn't carry her or anything, but he could sit with her for a minute. "Gosh you're so brave," Steve told her. "If I'd fallen like that? I'd be crying and crying!" He stroked her hair back from her face, giving her a little smile. "You're amazing."

Steve had never felt like what he felt for Gwen for anyone, fiercely fond and protective and he knew he had to look after her knees.

A fall like that for a normal kid probably would've resulted in a broken arm or leg given the way she'd landed. The spider venom still in her body prevented that though, and only resulted in a few scrapes and bruises, and they'd likely clear up in a short while. But she was tiny and it was scary more than anything else. Not to mention, she'd been having fun and then all the sudden that was over. That was a lot to take in.

Steve was someone she knew she loved. It was a little different from Mr. Stark but not terribly so. He was someone who also made her feel safe, and he was nice to her and fun to play with. He was older so she kind of looked up to him. She also liked to help with his medicines when he needed them. She knew right where they were and could get them to him really fast!

Gwen kept a tight hold on him while he soothed her, and when she stopped sniffling she looked up at him. Her blue eyes were still a little watery. "Is Mr. Stark gonna be mad that I was climbing too high?"

Gwen made Tony smile in a way that made Steve's heart warm. When she smiled at him all gappy, well Steve would do anything and everything for her. Except stop her from falling, because he couldn't move fast enough and he couldn't catch her. But he was there now and he could cradle her small self, petting her soft blonde hair while he settled her.

"No, no, he won't be mad. Just scared that you might get hurt, that's all," Steve said as he looked down at her. But Tony might sure as heck be mad at Steve for letting something made happen to Gwen.

"Come on, let's go inside and I'll clean your knees. Like when you help with my medicine, it's my turn now to help you," Steve told her with a little smile. "I can give you a ride inside on my back though!"

Gwen was normally a very happy little girl. Very sweet, very sassy, very smart. She packed a punch to be in such a small body, but that was part of her charm. She was genuine when she gave her hugs; it wasn't just because she was trying to be a good girl or be polite. She loved hugging Steve and Tony. Hugs were a great way to say hello, they were a great way to make people feel better when they were sad, they were a way to show how happy you were. Yes. Gwen liked hugs and when Steve hugged her she did feel better.

She definitely didn't want Tony to be sore at her for climbing too high, and she didn't want Steve to be mad at her about it either. If Tony got mad at Steve for letting her go too high she'd definitely say it was her fault and not to get mad because Steve was doing his job and he was just the greatest.

"Really?" Her tears went away and were replaced with a big smile. "Okay!" She scrambled around right onto Steve's back and clung to him.

He saw the way Tony looked at Gwen, eyes full of warmth and then sometimes a flash of something else. Sad. But only for a moment before it was gone. Steve didn't really understand, but he did know if anything bad happened to Gwen that everyone would be heartbroken. So he got her on his back and used all his strength to carry her home, which wasn't too hard considering what a little thing she was.

Once they were inside Steve sat Gwen on the couch and went into the bathroom, in the back of the cabinet behind his medicine was a little first aid kit and he brought it out and lay it on the couch.

"Okay, Nurse Gwen, are you ready to assist me in this VERY important operation?" Steve asked with all the mock-seriousness he could manage as he pulled on disposable gloves fives times too large.

Gwen liked to see her family happy. She tried to do what little things she could to make them smile, which usually was just drawing pictures and hugs and singing them little songs she made up on a whim. She was a kid. If she could cook them meals or do their laundry or something she'd totally do it. As it was, she did the best she could just because they were people she knew she loved a whole lot.

Gwen plopped down on the couch and had kinda forgotten about her scrapes because the ride on Steve's back was a lot of fun. It wasn't until she was sitting there that she remembered and looked down at her scraped knees. Yeah, they still hurt. But Steve was really good at distracting her so when he came back she looked up at him. The mock-seriousness was something she absolutely took seriously so her eyes went wide and she nodded. "Yes Doctor Steve, I'm ready."

Steve was good at games. When you were sick a lot and couldn't run around you had to make your own fun like drawing and playing pretend. "Alright Nurse Gwen, this might sting a tiny bit," he told her as he carefully cleaned her scrapes. "But you're the bravest nurse ever and you sewed that man's arm back on when it fell off," he reminded her.

After her knees and elbow were clean he carefully got the bandaids and removed them from their packaging. Steve was gentle as he applied them so the sticky didn't touch the grazes, because you had to be real careful. He used about 20. It was his masterpiece. Once they were covered he looked over his work. "There," Steve said before leaning down to kiss her knee. "All better."

Gwen had a pretty vivid imagination. She and Peter always came up with the most elaborate schemes and stories whenever they played games together. It wasn't hard at all for her to be able to imagine herself as a nurse and Steve as a doctor while they tended to her scrapes. Scrapes that were going to be gone in a matter of maybe an hour or so but still right now they were mean looking red marks on her knees and the bruises were ugly but they'd disappear too.

"I did do that," she said, pouting a little because it did sting! But Steve was good at comforting her and it wasn't as bad as it could've been. The sting wasn't worse of a pain than the actual scrapes themselves so she managed to keep most of the tears away and just sniffled again.

Obviously kissing her knee made it feel a million times better. "You're the best, Dr. Steve! I feel so much better. But I'm gonna not climb for a little bit. Will you read to me? Can we read together?"

She looked okay, sitting there with all the bandaids on her, Steve was happy he'd done the right thing. Tony would understand, you couldn't stop Gwen playing just because you were scared she might get hurt. No you had to just let her climb and climb and keep her as safe as you could. But now she was smiling and happy and Steve peeled off the too big rubber gloves and put everything else away.

"I think reading is a great idea," he said and he was relieved. Reading wasn't stressful and Steve was pretty good at that. Like he was good at all inside and sit still activities.

Tony had found some books for her and Steve grabbed the pile before climbing up onto the couch with her. He opened it and hummed. "Once upon a time there was a little spider named Gwen and she was the best."

Gwen liked all the bandaids. That meant she was super healed up and super safe. When the scrapes did go away, Gwen was going to attribute all of that to Steve and his magic bandaids because that was definitely why she was all better. He was like a hero and she greatly admired him. She also knew he was important to Mr. Stark and that made him even more important to her than he already was just by being Steve.

"A little spider and her name was Gwen?" Gwen immediately started to giggle. She shifted right over next to Steve and pressed into his side. Steve might not have been on the big side, but to Gwen he was big and strong and easy to snuggle with. He made her feel safe and secure. "Does she have any friends?" She asked curiously. "Would anyone be friends with a little spider?"

Sometimes you needed a LOT of bandaids. Steve wasn't well and sometimes the attention made him feel better, he didn't get a lot of it, so when he needed a little extra tending to it was nice. So he made sure she was utterly tended to and then some.

She was so wonderfully pocket sized and Steve nodded as he pretended to read from the book in front of him. "Oh of course, she had so many friends, a Shark named Stark and a Reindeer named Rogers!" And so the story went, about their adventures and the wonderful times they had together. It was a story, but it was real, because Steve had never been so happy.
