Summary: Severus wakes Harry up in the middle of the night. Why?
"Harry, wake up."
"Mmmff."
"Harry."
"Mmm?"
"Wake up."
"Wh..Severus? What...what time is it?"
"Near dawn. Come on, get up."
"Wh...why?"
"You'll see."
"Sev, it's in the middle of the night. We usually have to get up at the crack of dawn anyway when Lily wakes, so why are we getting up now?" mumbled Harry as he reluctantly sat up in bed while trying to rub the sleep from his eyes.
"Do you trust me?"
"Severus."
"Harry."
"..........."
"?"
"Fine."
"Come on then."
Harry reached for his glasses and shoved them on. He was cranky and irritated with Severus and could not for the life of him figure out why he was awake and insisting they get up before the sun was even out.
Severus watched his husband stumble out of bed and make his way to the loo. While Harry was taking care of his morning ablutions, Severus pulled out several pieces of clothing from their wardrobe. When Harry came out, he handed his husband his trousers. Harry pulled them on still half asleep and finally leaned against the wall with his eyes half closed. Severus took the opportunity to pull a thick sweater over his lover's head and finally his own thick Slytherin scarf. Severus took Harry's hand and led his out to the sitting room where he had left his trainers before going to bed. He motioned for Harry to put them on while he called for Winky who appeared by Severus with a snap of his fingers.
"Winky, watch the children until Master Harry and I return."
"Will Master Snape and Master Harrry be wishing for breakfast upon their arrival home?"
"More than likely thank you."
"Winky will take care of everything Master Snape." said the house-elf before disappearing with a soft crack.
By this point Harry had his trainers on and was snoring softly with his head resting against the back of the couch.
"Harry."
"Huh?"
"Come on."
"Yeah, alright." Harry said grumpily shuffling toward his husband.
Severus was already by the door with what appeared to be a small messenger bag wrapped around his shoulder and resting on his hip. He picked up Harry's gloves that had been resting on the table in the foyer, the striped ones James had given him, and slipped then carefully on each of his lover's hands, kissing each one in turn. Even though he was tired, Harry smiled at the gesture. He handed Harry his traveling cloak and then slipped his own on before opening the door.
It was dark and bitterly cold, as Severus wrapped his arm around Harry and guided him down the street.
"Where are we going Severus?" Harry asked bitterly. His breath came out in little angry pufffs as he spoke.
"Patience Harry. It is not too far. Come, I'll keep you warm." Severus opened his traveling cloak and pressed Harry against him tightly before wrapping them both up and continuing down the foggy lamp lit street, his arm tightly around his husband.
Soon they were at the same park Severus had taken Harry and the children flying just a few days earlier.
The same park where Severus had met Lily Evans.
Severus pulled Harry toward an old rickety swing set. Setting his messenger bag on the ground, he sat down on one of the empty swings, and bade Harry to come sit on his lap.
By now Harry was wide awake and staring at his husband like he had lost his mind.
"Come Harry, surely you are not afraid of a little swing are you?"
"No, maybe a little bit of you. Are you okay?"
"Never better. Why do you ask?"
"Because you are sitting on a child's swing in a park in the middle of the night, as we freeze our arse's off." Harry huffed.
"Very astute Harry, however, if you get your own arse over here and sit down, you would not be freezing." Severus smirked.
How could Harry fight logic like that considering the whole damn night had been illogical from the time Severus had woke him up.
Shuffling over to his husband, he sat down on his lap with a huff. He would play along, but he didn't have to like it, especially when there was a warm bed at Spinner's End with four duvets calling his name.
Severus pulled Harry tightly against him and wrapped his cloak firmly around them. Taking Harry's gloved hands into his own, he twined their finger and brought them up to the chains to hold on as he pulled his legs against Harry's to tuck them underneath while pushing off from the ground to swing them gently forward.
The rusty chains squeaked softly as they swung back and forth in a gentle rhythm. Harry leaned back and felt his earlier anger fading as he relaxed against his husband's chest, cradled in a cocoon of safety and warmth, and lulled into peacefulness by the motion of the swing.
Neither spoke as they nestled into their own world where nobody but them could enter. They were each other's, and nothing existed but the rocking of the swing and the squeak of the chain at each pass.
Time stilled and the world held its breath for the sole couple in a forgotten park.
Severus pressed his cheek against the younger and sang softy as they swung:
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When the skies are grey
You'll never know dear
How much I love you
Please don't take
My sunshine
Away
Their eyes met in the soft glow of predawn and never breaking the rhythm of the swing, their lips met in a brush of moist heat in the chilly morning air. Soft puffs of hot breath left their mouths as the kiss deepened and their tongues danced together, flicking against each other in a joyous union.
As the first rays of dawn slipped upon their faces, they broke their kiss, and the swing came to a slow halt.
"Look Harry." Severus whispered against his husband's ear.
The world exhaled the breath it had been holding and time resumed.
Harry looked up and together they watched the sun peak over the horizon just behind the great oak that Severus had originally hidden behind to watch Harry's mum all those years ago.
They stayed there together watching as the little park was painted in a soft pink glow. The first light of morning allowing them to view their world through rose colored glasses, if even for a little while.
"It's beautiful." Harry breathed transfixed by the ethereal beauty around him.
"Yes." Severus agreed, his eyes only on Harry.
Severus accioed a thermos from his messenger bag, and poured them each a cup of steaming hot chocolate complete with marshmallows.
They drank their chocolate in silence as they watched the sunrise in contentment. Once the sun was past the great oak, and the last of the chocolate drunk, Severus put the thermos away, slung his bag back over his shoulder and twined their fingers together for their walk back home.
"Severus?"
"Hmm?"
"Why did you do this?"
"Do I need to have a reason?"
"I suppose not, but I'm glad that you did."
"Humph."
When they reached Spinner's End, Harry was about to open the door, when Severus reached over and stilled his hand. Harry looked over at his husband and their eyes met.
"Many times when my parents were fighting or I had a particularly bad day, I would sneak out early in the morning to watch the sunrise. Sometimes Lily would meet me, but usually I went alone. Seeing the world through the rose colored glasses of a painted sunrise always gave me hope that better things had to come. I wanted to share that with you."
Harry lifted his hand to touch the older's face.
"I love you Severus."
"And I you my heart."
Together, as they entered their home, the day seemed a little brighter.
