10 Years of Snarry Discussion Post: Why Snarry
So Let's Talk About Your First Time...

No, not that first time. ;D The first time you read Snarry or even any Harry Potter fan fic. Do you remember the title of the first Harry Potter fic you ever read? Were you hooked immediately or did it take awhile? How did you find Harry Potter fan fiction in the first place? And what did you think the first time you saw the HP/SS pairing? Intrigued? Skeptical? We'd love to know what you thought.

My first fic was A Year Like No Other. While it took me a while to give in and actually read the story, my friend worked on me for over 6 trying to get me to read any fanfic, I was hooked several paragraphs in. I spent the next few months learning about fanfic and reading mentor/adoption/severitus fic, then ran across a story where Remus and Severus got together...what an eye opener that was. You have to understand, I had never known fanfic was there. I had no idea, I was so in the dark about it all. Then to find out that people made "other" pairings, and some of them were gay...yeah, never looked back after that.

As for why Snarry. A Year filled a void that canon left. There should have been more between Harry and Severus, that was obvious by book 4. While I hadn't understood that void was there, I was greatful it had been filled, and once my slash blinders were removed, I found my first OTP! :)

Well, my case was in Spanish. But I loved when I found the English fandom, so much big and GOOD!!!
In Spanish, I found a great author that only used to write drarry. Now I Know her, he lives close to me, and is a good friend. And you know? She wrote wonderful snarry only for me!!! ^^

I was involved in POTC fanfiction, but lost interest with the second movie; read fanfic for Vampire Chronicles and even Star Trek from the TV series.
Pir8fancier's Home Fries Nazi introduced me to Snarry.

i think my first hp/ss was a story by arsenic jade. i only read it because i loved her other writing (especially her origin of myth and her care of magical creatures series) i didn't like it, but could not really put a finger on what i didn't like about it: her writing is brilliant.

then i read the marriage stone which i liked but there was also a point where i couldn't continue. (well, apart from the fact that it is an abandoned wip anyway :D) i think i stopped reading when it turned out that almost every male character in that fic was gay :D

i started a year like no other but that one wasn't for me either. someone had recommended it to me but i wasn't ready for that commitment i guess (it's quite a long fic). another attempt to warm up to that pairing was if you are prepared which i liked at the beginning but had to stop soon, too.

then i found hogsmeade, circa 1826 by taran (also an abandoned wip) and i think that was my trigger. this one intrigued me and from then on i began looking purposely for snarries. so, it took several attempts but i am glad that i kept on reading :D

I started out reading Snape/Lucius but the fics I found were so brutal (well-written but so full of hate and kink) I couldn't continue - I learned that that wasn't to my taste at all, to put it mildly.

I honestly can't remember for sure the first Snarry I read (then again, I never can remember titles or authors even when I love a story - I blame the menopause, as I've been doing for about 10 years), but I think I was already interested in the pairing myself (as a writer) or I wouldn't have read it at all. Pretty much anything people remember as an early classic I probably read during that devouring period - Snarry was still a fringe pairing at that time, quite small, but with a lot of good writers. It was actually possible back then to keep up with most, if not all, of the stories as they emerged.

I can't remember my first fic. It was so long ago and I've read so many. I remember after the third book came out I was looking for this pairing. I'd read a few interesting Snupin fics, but I couldn't find any Snarry at the time. Then I joined the Snapeslash yahoo group, which featured pretty much all Snape pairings but often leaned towards slash. Eventually the Snarry fics started trickling in. It's really frustrating when you realize you love a pairing you had been looking for, but you can't find anything more on it.

So, I guess I was a bit too early to the party. And I think now the first few fics I read weren't so memorable except for the fact they were Snarry. The writing was okay, but it wasn't amazing or memorable for me. It still showed me that I liked the pairing, though

x-commented from LJ

Oh Gods I can't remember my first Snarry!!! *runs around like a headless chicken*

But I'll tell you a story about it :)

When the first HP books came out various friends tried to get me to read it, I was at the time (circa 1999-2004) deep into my LOTR obsession that I didn't not see/read/watch anything else! Dude, I had LOTR what more did I want? Of course it didn't help that all the people that tried to pimp the stories to me where not slashers (well maybe one or two of them were) and kept telling me "but it has magic! and a young boy!", I was like: "why would that interest me?" I was of course by that time neck deep into various fandoms and I kept seeing people mentioning HP and Harry/Draco, but still it was not enough. Due to how pushy (the wrong kind of pushy) some of my friends were I ended up hating Harry Potter and everything it stood for! I did not want to read it or watch or have anything to do with it!!

I relocated from the UK to Greece in spring of 2005, I got a job for the summer and then I went into unemployment for the winter months (I live on an island and most of the hotels work only during spring/summer) and having just bought a car I was horribly broke, so I was staying at home and not doing much. My oldest BFF decided to take matter into her own hands and send me her HP books, just in case...

I read the first 6 books in 5 days during Xmas holidays of 2005. It took me something like 2 weeks to decide that I needed to find slash about it. I think that my first foray into HP slash was around January 1st 2006, quite possibly on AFF and then the Fuq-Fests on kardasi.com and then Resticted Section.

My pairing of choice? Snape/Harry. Snarry was my first pairing and still my most favorite one (although am a whore for Snape/almost anyone or you know Snape/Kingsley, Snape/Bill, Snape/Charlie and occasionally Snupin). I found the comms on LJ quick enough and started reading fic. Funnily enough I became a member of pornish_pixies around the time of the big strike through and I followed fandom to Insanejournal where I made some wonderful friends that I still annoy from time to time!

So remember those friends that kept trying to interest me in HP like a decade ago? Imagine how they reacted when I told them that I read the books and within one week of that I was reading Snape/Harry slash.... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! It was not my fault that I read the books and came away with that pairing! LOL

I've been a fan of May/December pairings for a long time (thank you TPM) and a slasher for longer, so really very few things in the Snarry fandom shocked me or made me feel like a weirdo, that's always a plus :)

I'm sure I've told you this before, but I will again (hey, it's not as if I ever have a problem talking about Snarry *g*).
I stared reading the books when they first came out. I initially thought I would be all about the H/D until someone said, "do you know people actually like to pair Snape and Harry? Eew!" I shrugged, thought, "hm, worth a look," and picked The Tea Series as my first foray into Snarry.
After that I never looked back.
I have never read IYAP or AYLNO and I never plan to. I have enough trauma in my real life. ;)

Haha, I'm just like Alisanne - my best mate said "did you know people pair up Snape and Harry, its disgusting!" and it was like a light bulb came on in my head and something just clicked and went 'YES!' I was instantly obsessed with the idea and that same day she showed me where to find fanfic - I'd never read any fanfic before and wasn't really a proper HP fan, but just the thought of Snape and Harry together was amazing to me. I was initially a bit shy of Harry as I didn't find him sexy, but then he, over several years, became just beautiful in my mind, as beautiful as Snape!

My first fic... I can't remember the name, it was a short one where Snape made Harry lick his own, erm, happy ending off a mirror. I would only read short BDSM fic until I discovered Aucta Sinistra and then she opened my eyes with 'Scratch' to the whole wonderful world of long fics and from there I discovered all the amazing ladies who write it all! Phew! So there's me. :) x

I came to Snarry by way of SS/HG. I spent maybe two months reading that pairing and I do remember my first reaction when I heard of Snarry was a bit EW/WTF LOL! But I dipped my toes in within the week and completely jumped ship not long after. Not long after I started writing fic myself.

I really don't remember which fic I read first. Probably whichever archive I was reading SS/HG at (adult fanfiction.net and sycophant hex) just snowballed into the rest of the archives. I read *everything* I could get my hands on.

At some point I stumbled across Snarry reader and that in turn led me to LJ and people's journal's and from there the rest is history.

One thing I do know is that Telanu was the first Snarry author I sent a message to, as I'd stayed up until 3 or something reading the Tea Series (to whatever point it was finished in early 2007). So I suppose that must have left an impression on me.

Hmm. I think the first HP fic I read was way back in either late 2003 or 2004, and I definitely started with Harry/Ginny. (Yes, I know. xD) This was A) before I'd read any of the books, and B) largely because I was running out of interesting fic to read in the Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha areas on FF.Net, and, hey, some of those fic look interesting... xD My first slash was later in 2004, and was Draco/Harry, and with typical teenager fascination, I started reading that almost exclusively after a while. And I probably started reading Snarry after the interesting-sounding Drarry started to dry up, and I know there was a short period when I found Snape/Hermione intriguing.

I think something about Snarry just clicked with me, because that's been my favourite HP pairing ever since, though it probably took a bit of an adjustment period. It got to the point where I actively avoided writing and reading het for several years, but I've been getting back into that just a little, probably prompted by my brain dumping girl!Harry at me and me going, "WUT U WANT?!" at it in reply, with a side of, "That's interesting. But most Snarry fen don't LIKE girl!Harry, brain!"

I'll be buggered if I can remember any of the names of fic I read that long ago, though; I do good if I can remember the names of ones I read last week! I do know one of my favourite Harry/Ginnys back then was written by Lolly Phoenix on FF.net.. I think it involved teen parenthood and Tonks as a surrogate and triplets? LOL. As for Draco/Harry... I was a huge, huge fan of stuff by desolate03 (also on FF.net), and actually that person's stuff was the only stuff I really liked with top!Harry. I guess I've always been a bottom!Harry girl, thinking about it. xD As for Snarry.. I think [info]the_con_cept features in there (Pink has left me with a rather uncommon liking of flamingos, actually. ;D), but... I can't remember the names of any other authors I liked back then! xD

Oh yes. First time I saw Snarry, I think I was like, "Ew." LOL. But obviously I've changed; HP fic has introduced me to so many things that I probably wouldn't have realised was interesting for many, many years without it. Probably at that point my biggest thing was the age difference and the way he treated Harry in what I knew of canon. In fact, I think I read Severitus fic before I read Snarry, which probably paved the way at least a bit. It's really funny to think that the age difference was a problem, considering I was a HUGE InuYasha/Kagome fangirl, and it's totally canon that he's a LOT older than her. Even with the "frozen in time by a purified arrow" thing. xD

Hm. Long comment is long and getting off-topic. I go eat my breakfast now. :D

~Mara

I love this! I came into Snape fandom in 2006 after a major obsession with the film V for Vendetta got me online. I noticed I had a long simmering lust for another dark haired anti-hero.

I listened to Snapecast and heard about fanfic and pairings, and heard Rachel (chaeche) say the word "snarrrry" my toes curled and my hair stood on end and I knew I had to run and get some. I was intrigued/horrifed by the whole idea, but the thrill quickly outran the squick.

My first Snarry was A Bittersweet Potion by Alchemia Dent & Bugland.(www.intertexius.com) it's a long angsty WIP that is not currently updating now, but I highly recommend the first three books as classic, brilliant SS/HP, where a self-loathing Severus gets close to cat-animagus!Harry, and Harry discovers his emerging sexuality. It was funny, hot, angsty and I couldn't put it down, much less get it out of my head.
Its as if I fell in love with the pair, like I would with a person. This love is still intense three years later. Who can explain such magic?!

Someone I knew from a yahoogroup for Lord Peter Whimsey (just discussion, not fic) rec'd AJHall's fics. They are Neville/Draco. I was hooked immediately and read them over and over and over. Then I went looking for other Neville/Draco stories and read all I could find. Joined Longbottom Weekly and went though all the archive looking for that pairing. When I ran out I started Neville/anyone but Harry. Then finally Neville/Harry then Harry/Draco then everything. I think my first Snarry might have been Safe House by thesewarmstars. I read most all pairings now.

And what did you think the first time you saw the HP/SS pairing? Intrigued? Skeptical?

Actually, I searched for it myself after I'd stumbled on HP fanfiction (which was het) for the fist time and before I even knew what slash was. I wondered, "Could people be writing male/male pairings as well? Let's try to look for, oh, Snape/Harry - or Snape/Sirius." And that's how I found my first Snarry and devoured it gleefully. ;) It was a novel-length story riddled with typos and awful characterisation that today would make me hit the back button at once, but at the time I thought it was the best thing ever.

Well I started out reading Rurouni Kenshin fic and Kenshin/Saito fics. I loved how all that hate led into nummy hotness. When I started reading HP fic it was all about the Drarry..(because hey that hate/love thing was hot in one why not another) The first Snarry fic (I came into the fandom kinda late) was Cambiare Podentes and buddy did that push all my buttons. I have been hooked since. (Of course I have had quite a few stops back into the Drarry and absolute love for the drapery).

I'm not sure why I first started reading fics in Dusk till Dawn - I think I may have got there via reading Snupin mpreg by McKay and I was looking for more mpreg Snape. Anyway, I kind of fumbled around for a bit then came across Auctasinistra's Quid Pro Quo and it blew me away. I knew I HAD to try writing Snarry in the hope that, if I practised long enough (lived long enough?) and read enough, and tried hard enough, with a following wind and a damn good beta or two, I might write something as good. Then I realised that I ought to be realistic in my ambitions and tried to write well enough to be invited to join the Snarry Games. Now I set myself targets, the last 2 being - can I write a cross-over that people will enjoy, and can I write Snape with anyone else? At 56.5K and 83.5K, they kind of burned me out for a bit. Not sure what to do next...

From Drarry to Snarry

I never read any of the original HP books, but I had watched some of the movies. I saw a preview for HBP with Draco and Harry fighting and thought they would make an interesting couple. However, once I started reading Drarry, I found myself more interested in Snape (especially once I learned about what happened in DH). I felt that Snape and Harry had more compelling issues to work out and more commonalities than Draco and Harry. In addition, the more Drarry I read, the less I liked Draco and the less I liked the pairing. At this point, Snape is definitely my favorite HP character, followed by Harry and Hermione. And my favorite pairing is Snarry.

I think I rather fell into Snarry. Around the time OotP came out I discovered how much Harry Potter stuff there was online and went about exploring. At the time my favorite character was Sirius – what can I say, I was young and naïve. I remember the first HP site I was addicted to was called Marauding Mayhem…it was a cute site with some art, a section where you could ask the Marauders questions…from there I discovered there was a thing called fan fiction. I started with the pretty generic stuff, probably some Harry/Hermione, perhaps Hermione/Snape if I was feeling adventurous. I remember starting to read Pawn to Queen (almost positive that was the title), and while I wasn’t crazy about the story, it opened my eyes to more mature fiction. I can’t remember the title of my first Snarry, but I know it was a WiP and it involved some Snupin moments as well. As I recall, it started off appearing to be Snupin but the author was very insistent that it was actually a Snarry. The only scene I seem to remember is Snape saving Harry from a dementor and asking Harry if he was going to just let the thing kiss him…and for some reason I’m thinking of a spider? Haha I don’t know. But I remember thinking “I love Lupin! I want Remus and Harry to be together!” But I was SO intrigued by the idea of Snape and Harry together. It was just impossible resist, and I found myself sucked in.

From there, I believe I discovered Dusk to Dawn. Minx’s Lost Feeling was the first long Snarry I read. I remember being heartbroken when she announced she was retiring from Snarry, and she said there were so many other great writers, and I didn’t quite believe her. I remember being scared to start the Tea Series (which still wasn’t finished at the time) just because of the sheer length and I was nervous to get SO involved. But…it was a lost cause. After that came the CW-Verse, and then my obsessive personality compelled me to read pretty much every Snarry I could get my hands on.

Then, for maybe a year and a half, I got caught up with school and general life craziness and I cut myself off. For a while Snarry was just a nostalgic thing of the past, and I honestly didn’t really think of it that much. Then, out of the blue, I had the urge to re-read Tira Nog’s Nocturne…so I did. And then I couldn’t stop reading. I worked my way through the Snarry Reader, then Walking the Plank…like I said, totally obsessive personality. I’m currently re-reading Civil War and am excited for the Tea Series next. It’s a wonder I manage to get anything else done. But it’s pretty amazing…I thought I was done, and those boys just pulled me right back in again as though I had never left. Never a dull moment with Snarry.

Wow, this was about five times longer than I thought it would be. Sorry, I tend to ramble with love…

I was reading highlander and weiss kreuz fic when half my friends got into harry potter. I was reluctant, b/c it was so popular, but saw one of the films and thought it was cute enough, so I let them suggest some of the fics they were reading. Consequently, I started with remus/sirius and snape/hermione fics. I liked both pairings well enough, and still do, but I've never really liked hermione, and the remus/sirius stories were just missing something.

So I thought to myself; I like snape, and I like slash, who could I pair snape with? Well, harry's pretty malleable as a character -- I bet his fic persona is better than in the books.

Then I googled snape/harry slash, found an archive (ink stained fingers) and never looked back. I don't recall the first hp or snarry fics I read though...

Great question and a story I never get tired of telling! I'm always blathering talking about how I was in Star Wars fandom for like, yanno, years and years. Slashers were always those people at cons and not me. A gal I worked with kept telling me to read those popular Harry Potter books that Rosie (I used to watch Rosie's talk show every day at work because she did so much B'way stuff) was always talking about but I was reluctant. I mean, kid's books? She--my co-worker, not Rosie O'Donnell--brought the first one into work and just said, Okay try it. So I started the book and it alllllmost put me off. I mean everyone was so meen to Harry. Unhappy about his life, I kept reading. And fell in love. I sorted figured out Snape wasn't the bad guy but I wasn't in love. Not yet. By the second book I really wanted to write Snape fan fic and came up with a couple of stories--don't even ask--and realized that HP fandom was online. Trouble was, I really wasn't. So I got online, learned about yahoo groups and stuff and just generally learned about online fandom.

Out of the blue, one of my Star Wars buds emailed me to catch up and asked what I was into. The weird thing about this is, she and I are the most casual of aquaintances, and have exchanged maaaaybe three emails in ten years or so. So when I say out of the blue, I really mean it. I told her I was into HP and she wrote back that the only fic she knew of was slash and she knew I wasn't into that. I said, what the heck, send me the link. Fate much?

It was the first part of the Tea Series. I think I read it about 47 times. And the second part. I don't think there was a third part yet.

Yeah. Hooked. I started writing a Snarry fic within a week but didn't get brave enough to actually post anything (not that one) (really, I was not brave at all. I had to breathe into a paper bag every time I posted for um, like a couple of years) for a little while after that. It was pretty well-received so I signed up for a fest and have not stopped writing yet. I have some of those early efforts in notebooks and I still dig them out from time to time and read them.

I am sad to say I don't remember my first Harry Potter fic...It was 10 years ago and I am pretty sure it was pretty bad because then I moved on to diff. and better written fics. I DO however remember the fic that got me into Snarry. Another sad note, it is not a Snarry fic. ^^ Instead, it is a Servitus fic. It's called Blood Magic and it is the usual, Harry finds out Snape is his dad. There is nothing beyond family relationship between them but it got me thinking...That is when everything went downhill...^^;

When I first fell into HP fandom around 2001/2002, I had no idea slash existed, nevermind Snarry. And when I found out about Snarry, I was originally entirely grossed out! I wouldn't go near it, and as far as I was concerned, Harry/Draco was my OTP and would be forever. Of course, then Book 6 was released.

Book 6 was a game changer for me. I had never been particularly interested in Snape as a character, but I became completely obsessed with him after that. I was utterly convinced that he'd only killed Dumbledore on Dumbledore's own orders and was still working for the Light, if you will. I wanted to get everyone's take on him, and the easiest way to do that was through fanfic. I bit the bullet and decided I'd try reading Snarry, so I wandered over to Switchknife's Slash Recs to find something that might fit my tastes. I can't remember which one I read first, but it was a combination of A Convenient Marriage, Beech Hall, and Hall of the Mountain Kings that sealed the deal - I just started reading and couldn't stop. I didn't read anything else.

After many, many months of wondering about it, I was forced to concede that I no longer had an OTP - I had two. x.x Which, of course, is a bit of a contradiction.

I was 13 when I first started reading fanfic (nearly 8 years ago now), I had just moved house across the country, I didn't know anyone and I was already mildly obsessed with Harry Potter. I started with Harry/Ginny (because at 13 you don't really think about the possibility of two men) and read some of those, but then I just really started to get annoyed at Ginny!! I started watching CSI, in which the first fanfic I read was slash, which made me think 'Oh, men, men with men, harry pottery men with other men!!' This of course was a brilliant idea, why hadn't I found out sooner!!
I then went to Harry/Draco, because the chemistry was perfect,(I still read Drarry now, I can't help it) and then I stumbled upon Snarry (which I think may have something to do with my love of tall, dark, intelligent, sarcastic men, but who knows?!). The first Snarry I remember reading was (I think) 'At the end of all things', at least it is definitely the one that sticks in my mind to the point that I read it about 5/6 years ago and even thinking about it now makes me want to cry.
But Harry Potter fanfiction has been part of my life for over 1/3 of it so far, and I drift away and I come back again. I don't consider Snarry my OTP, I have two OTPs (Drarry and Snarry) and an OT3 (Sev/Harry/Draco)but really, if it's well written and I like it I will read quite a lot of other stuff just to say I have. But so many fics are just like my normal books, old friends that I look up when I need them. I can't quite imagine what my leisure time would be like otherwise (or in fact how much free time I would have without them). Yay for 10 years of Snarry! -x-x-

Quid Pro Quo by [info]auctasinistra.

I hadn't even heard of slash before when a random click on someone's LJ brought me to a listing of the user's favourite stories / pairings for different fandoms. The idea of Snape/Harry intrigued me, and Quid Pro Quo was on the top of her list. So I read it.

I couldn't stop! I was late for an appointment (and skinned my knee tripping on a corner of carpet), and as soon as I got home again, I went back to the laptop. When I was done, I quickly read my way through the rest of Aucta's stories, and moved on to [info]dementordelta.

Now? I write Snarry... among other pairings.

My first was Canon in D by Occasus. I'd been reading slash for a while (Elrond/Glorfindel from LotR) so the slash itself didn't shock me (though I remember first encountering Aragorn/Legolas did lol). And it was such a wonderful story I fell in love with the pairing and didn't manage to be shocked by anything that came after. I've never looked back.
