The Awaited Day
Waiting with a nervous bride was not Severus’ idea of fun, his daughter Kimberly had gotten up and sat down so many times that he had threaten to glue her to the seat. Seeing his daughter starting to bite her nails, he got up and took her in his arms. Hugging her as he always did whenever she started to get anxious about something.
“What is it, Kim?” Severus asks, bringing a finger up to wipe the tear that was sliding down his daughter’s cheek.
“Father, I’m afraid,” biting her bottom lip, “what if I fall walking down the aisle, what if...”
“You will do fine and don’t forget you are a Snape. You can do no wrong,” Severus whispered cleaning his daughters face gently with a handkerchief that he took out of his pocket.
“Yes, I can I am also a ‘Potter’ and you once said that Dad was the unluckiest person alive.”
“Cheeky brat,” Severus replied, making his daughter smile, “that was after your Dad became a Snape, now he is just lucky.”
“Who is lucky?”
Both of them turned at the same time to look at Harry coming into the tent and stopped to look at them.
“You,” Kimberly answered. She walked to her Dad and gave him a hug.
“Of course I am, otherwise how could I have survived your childhood?” Harry asked, with a smile. “However, I don’t think your groom will survive if you keep him waiting for much longer.”
With a nod and a deep breath Kimberly said, “I am ready Dad, Father.”
Severus gave his daughter his arm and waited for her to take it, which she did with a grateful smile on her face. Walking to the entrance of the tent Harry stopped by his daughter and kissed her forehead, giving her the thumbs up and a wink to Severus as he walked out. Severus just gave a smile in return, squeezed his daughters’ hand, opened the flap, and walked out.
Walking down the aisle with his daughter on his arm, Severus was happy. They went through a lot to get here, from flower arrangements to the dresses. Turning to look at his daughter in her gown, he was speechless of how beautiful she looked, his little baby. He remembered the day they went for the fitting of her dress.
“Father, what do you think about this one?” Kimberly said as she step out of the dressing room, twirling around with the dress on, laughing as she always did when she tried on dresses. Severus could always remember the many times she had done it. But the one that stood out the most was the first time they took her shopping for her first set of witches robes, she was only five years old and she had put them on and twirled around the shop, laughing as she got dizzy.
“You, look lovely.”
“Would you like to see another dress, dear?” the sales woman at Kleinfeld's asked.
“No, this is ‘the dress’, I feel it.”
Severus, just looked on with a smile on his face as he saw his daughter twirling with her wedding gown on, but he actually saw the little five-year-old girl she used to be.
‘‘Look daddy, they fly.” Following it with a childish laugh as she twirled with her new dress robes on.
As time does as well, Severus thought; as he looked at his daughter grow-up before his eyes.
Coming back to the present, Severus looked up and saw that his daughter was looking at him making little gestures, to make him look down. When he looked, he saw that his daughter was wearing the wrong shoes and he smiled, she could never find her shoes and as he saw this a new memory came to him; the day of her first date.
“Father, have you seen my black shoes?” Kimberly said, leaning over the railing and looking down at her father.
“Which ones? You have so many that I’ve lost count,” Severus answered, looking up at his daughter.
“DAD!” Kimberly screamed, looking down at her father and giving him a smile when she saw him cringe.
“And how many times have I told you stop hanging over the railing like that? You will end up falling over it,” Harry scolded, coming out of the living room.
“I just want to know where my black shoes are,” Kimberly pouted.
“Have you checked in the laundry basket?” Harry question.
“No. Thanks Dad,” Kimberly said, dashing out of sight.
“How did we survive her childhood?” Harry said, turning to Severus.
“By being the geniuses that we are that’s how,” Severus said, looking at the time and wondering when that boy was going to pick her up. Maybe he still had time to give him the evil eye and a few scares, he had been a death eater after all, yes that sounded perfect.
“Severus, you will leave that boy alone. Do you understand?” Harry said, giving an evil glare as he left the room.
It was worth the cold shoulder that he later got after Kimberly and Harry accused him of making her date, cry, how could he had known that the impertinent child didn’t have a backbone in him? He thought that every boy who invited his baby out deserved the scare of his life. Well too bad that Kim and Harry didn’t think so.
When he felt his daughter squeeze his hand, another memory came to him. It was of the day his daughter took his hand when she took her first steps. It was the most magical moment that he could remember.
Severus had just sat down to read the Prophet when he heard a little gurgling sound, pulling the newspaper to the side he saw that his daughter had just crawled up to the center table and stood, using said table for support. He put the newspaper to the side, put his hand out for his daughter, and was left speechless when his daughter let go of the table and walked towards him, she was only able to take three steps.
However, for Severus it felt like she ran, until her little hand touched his. He felt as if his daughter had bestowed upon him the best gift he could be granted, the gift of trust, because she trusted him not to let her fall.
Moreover, for as long as he could Severus would never break that trust. That was what he conveyed to his daughter when he returned his daughter’s squeeze. Whenever she needed him, he would always be there.
When they arrived at the altar, he kissed his daughters’ cheek, smiling at her as he passed her hand to her future husband. He moved out of the way and went to sit next to Harry. When he sat, he found his hand being taken and squeezed for the second time that day, but this time his ring was also tenderly rubbed.
Looking at his daughter glowing with happiness and health he remembered the first time that Harry and he got the first scare of their lives.
Feeling a slight dip of the bed, he felt Harry get up and a little body joined his on the bed.
“Severus, she has a fever,” Harry whispered.
Getting up Severus walked into the bathroom and opened the cabinet taking out a fever reducer potion and a pepper-up potion. That night they both stayed up with their daughter, taking turns to walk with her until she fell asleep. And every time she had gotten sick, they had stay up to coddle her until she felt better.
“We are gathering here to witness the joining of this couple…”
The priest went on, but Severus only had eyes for his daughter. When their part came, he wanted to cry. He knew by what his daughter had told them that they would each say what they felt, not the customary vows everyone says.
“Kimberly, I have found to my great surprise that you have been the love that I was waiting for. We were friends since we were little and got in trouble together, as when we ended up throwing muggle balloons fill with mud into the Manor?”
Severus smiled remembering that day as if it was yesterday.
“Did you read The Prophet today?” Lucius commented as he drank from his teacup.
“Yes, when are they going to give up?” Harry said, from beside Severus, “the war is over; it’s been over for seven years now.”
Severus turned to Harry, and was about to speak when a horde of balloons came sailing through the open window and rained upon them, making the occupants of the room and the room itself covered in mud.
“What is this?” Draco asked, pulling at his pants.
“I believe it's mud,” Harry answered, smiling.
Severus walked to the window and looked down, where two little monsters were conspiring and making more balloons appear next to them, pointing at the window and laughing. They got up and turned, ready to throw the second batch of balloons when they saw Severus standing by the window, covered in mud and looking at them.
With a surprised look, they dashed out of view, and if Severus wasn’t wrong they were going to hide. And they better because they were in so much trouble.
“And remember how we got into trouble. That is my promise I want to be there for you, I want to throw balloons and get in trouble with you for the rest of my life. I want to be your husband, with all my heart,” Scorpius said smiling.
“Scorpius, I too want to be with you for the rest of my life. I want to get in trouble with you, maybe not throw balloons” the guest started laughing, “but I do want to find new ways to get in trouble with you. You are my love, my soul, and my friend and I want to be your wife, with all my heart.”
As Severus heard his daughter’s heart felt words, another memory was sparked. It was the memory of the day that Scorpius along with his parents came to ask for their daughter’s hand in marriage.
‘Uncle, I come to ask for Kimberly‘s hand in marriage,’ Scorpius said as he sat next to his father.
Severus had to give him credit, as he was the first boy to ever look him in the eyes and not shift them. Thinking it over, he looked at his daughter who was looking at him expectantly waiting for his answer. He knew that his approval was important for his daughter and if he said no, his daughter was going to be devastated. However, he could still make Scorpius suffer. And with a smile he said:
‘No…’ bringing his hand up to stall his daughter, Harry, Draco, and Astoria he continued, ‘I will let her marry you, but after a certain time of courtship. That is my final saying.’
‘Father…’
‘Severus…’ Harry started to say.
‘I accept,’ Scorpius said, not looking at anybody only at Severus.
Rising, he said, ‘Welcome to the family.’
He had known that Scorpius wasn’t going to let him down, and by accepting the courtship he had won Severus respect, yes this man as he was no longer a boy, was going to make his daughter happy.
‘Thanks, Father,’ Kimberly said, giving him a hug and a kiss on his cheek.
He had made the right decision, he thought as he saw his daughter with her future husband.
Severus turned to his husband and smile, they had been so lucky to have a daughter like Kimberly, especially as for them she was a miracle, a miracle that was left on their doorstep.
Severus was awakened by the alarms on their house. Taking hold of his wand, he sat up and felt Harry stir awake also.
‘Severus, are you ready?’ Harry whispered.
Looking at Harry and giving him a nod they both got up from the bed and walked out of the room with their wands at the ready, walking slowly down the stairs, checking every nook and cranny to see if there was anyone lurking around. Not finding anyone, they walked to the front door, looked out through the window, and saw that everything was fine. They looked at each other and then both nodded and with Harry behind him he opened the door and then looked out, when they saw no one they where about to close they door. That was when they heard the little cry. Both of them looked down and saw the baby, Harry dropped to his knees, picked up the little bundle, and walked inside the house. Severus looked around one more time and then closed the door.
When they where inside he checked for anything on the baby and when he confirmed that it was only the baby. He approached Harry, knelt down, and looked for any clues.
‘Harry, read this,’ Severus said to him, when he detached the note that was with the baby.
Mr. Potter,
This is my child; please take good care of her. I cannot keep her as I have been cursed and I don’t have long to live. You are the only one I know who will treat her well and love her even knowing that one of her parents was a Death Eater.
When he finished reading the note, Harry stared at him and then at the child on his arms.
They had just become fathers.
The ceremony ended and everyone congratulated the newlyweds, as they came inside for the reception. People lingered to chat and others looked for their seats among all the tables, when everyone had sat. The music started playing and he along with everyone else turned to watch the first dance of the newlyweds.
Everything changed on the night they opened the door to find their daughter. They went through everything from flu, first steps, boyfriends, and to a wedding. Life as he saw it was perfect, he had everything he had ever wished for, a wonderful spouse and a beautiful daughter with whom he had found peace and unconditional love. He thought all of this as he got and walked forward to take his daughter hand for the father and daughter dance.
