“We’re home,” Sylvie called, dropping her book bag and running into the kitchen; her twin sister Sophie did the same.
Sophie and Sylvie were identical twins, with Sylvie being older than Sophie by five minutes. Sylvie never let her sister forget that she was older, either. They both had straight, long black hair that they usually kept in a braid down their backs. They had high cheekbones, dark brown eyes, and small button noses. They were adorable, even with their glasses.
The girls were used to the house being quiet when they returned from school. Usually their father was there to greet him, but sometimes he got caught up in his lab doing his experiments. If that were the case, he would leave a snack on the table for the girls so that they wouldn’t be hungry.
Today was no exception. The girls walked to the table and saw that their father had put out fruit salad, cookies and milk—their favorite.
“Yummy,” crowed Sophie as she dove into the food with relish.
“Daddy makes the best snacks,” Sylvie agreed.
The sisters sat and ate until they were full, then they put their dirty dishes in the sink. Their father was very big on cleanliness, so he taught his daughters the same.
Sylvie looked at the clock. It was almost four in the afternoon. She looked out the window; if she and Sophie wanted to go outside to play, they had to hurry and finish their homework. She walked back to the entryway, grabbing her and her sister’s bags. Catching up to her sister, the two girls walked down the hall toward their room.
Suddenly, Sophie stopped. Sylvie looked at her sister, wondering what was wrong with her. She saw Sophie staring into the sitting room, so she turned to look.
There was a strange man in their father’s favorite chair! The girls knew all of their father’s friends, and they knew that they had never seen this man before. He was sprawled in the chair, arms hanging off either side with his legs crossed, looking uncomfortable. He had shaggy black hair that stuck up all over his head. The girls wondered if it looked that way normally. There was a lightning bolt scar on his forehead that the girls thought was peculiar. He had black, horn-rimmed glasses that were pushed down his nose. A wand peaked from beneath his right cuff.
“Who is he?” Sophie asked.
“I don’t know,” Sylvie answered.
“Do you think Daddy knows he’s here?” Sophie wondered.
“Don’t be silly, Sophie. Daddy had to let him in. Remember what he said about the wards,” the nine year old replied.
“Oh, I forgot,” Sophie muttered.
The girls kept whispering about the strange man, wondering if they should disturb their father and ask who he was. Before they could come to a decision, they heard their father coming inside the house from his workroom. Sophie and Sylvie walked out of the room, meeting their father in the hallway.
“Daddy!” Sophie exclaimed, “there’s a strange man in your chair.”
“He knows, Sophie,” Sylvie muttered, elbowing her sister. “He had to let him in, remember?”
Severus grinned at his girls. They were a handful, but he wouldn’t have them any other way. He wondered for a minute, how they would like their surprise.
“Potter,” Severus barked, “wake up! I have two people you need to meet.”
Harry Potter jumped out of the chair, wand at the ready. Years of training and fighting Voldemort and other dark wizards had left him always prepared, even when sleeping. He looked around wildly, staring at the girls for a minute before his eyes settled on Severus.
“Severus, what’s going on?” Harry asked, confused.
Severus didn’t look at him, but turned his eyes on his daughters, “Sylvie. Sophie. Do you remember how I told you that your father was away fighting the bad guys?”
The girls nodded their heads before.
“Well, he’s back. Here’s your father,” Severus told them, gesturing at Harry.
Turning to Harry, he said, “Harry Potter, meet Sylvie and Sophie Potter-Snape, your daughters.”
Harry could only smile as the girls ran to him and hugged his legs. It had been a long, hard war—fifteen years actually—and it was good to finally meet his children. When he’d moved Severus into the safe house in Italy, he knew that there was a chance he’d never see his unborn child. Voldemort had discovered Severus’s pregnancy and betrayal, so it was important to get him out of the country and into protection as fast as possible.
He had spent the last ten years fighting to get home to these people, his beloved husband and their two daughters. It was a shock to see twins since he thought there was only one child, but it was a double blessing. Harry Potter had finally received his reward for all that he had done for the Wizarding World.
“It’s good to be home,” Harry said.
“We’re glad you’re here with us as well, Harry,” Severus told him, and he meant it.
The girls clamored around their Papa for the rest of the night, hearing stories of the war and his life in Britain. They talked through dinner, bath time, and bedtime. Even though the girls had school the next day, Severus didn’t have the heart to make them go to bed. The joy in their faces as they bonded with their father was worth a missed day of school. Finally, around two in the morning, the girls couldn’t stay awake any longer and fell asleep in their fathers’ arms. Harry and Severus took them to their room and tucked them in, kissing their foreheads before leaving.
The men made their way to their bedroom, and once there, the spouses reacquainted themselves with each other’s bodies. It was a night neither would forget, the night when their family reunited. They had been fractured, but now they were whole. For Harry and Severus Potter-Snape, their lives were now complete.
