The salamander on the hearth stretched out, basking in the warmth as Minerva summoned an elf to build up the fire. She waited until the elf had vanished before speaking.
“No toys?”
“None.” Severus stared into the flames, and Minerva suddenly remembered just how young he was. “Not even my mother’s. Grandfather Prince disowned her, you know.”
“Oh, Severus.” Minerva had to repress the urge to pat him on the shoulder. No wonder he had been such an odd child when he’d arrived at Hogwarts. “Have you spoken to Septima about this?”
He reluctantly shook his head. “I’m afraid not.”
