The first Star Trek movie was unintelligible to anyone not familiar with the series, so the Muggle Studies professor devoted a whole day to screening the top ten episodes Hagrid immediately demanded to know where he could get a tribble, and most of the Ravenclaw girls immediately began crushing on Mr. Spock, but otherwise the marathon did its job. The audience knew the characters, the ship, and the milieu before they took their seats, and most clearly looked forward with great anticipation to the film.
At least until the children realized just how the Klingons differed from their television counterparts.
