It was his mother's copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, passed down from her mother, who'd received it as a Christmas gift in 1924 from “Auntie Zim-Zim,” whomever that was. It was battered after use by three generations, but the color charms had kept them fresh and bright. Severus smiled as he watched the Fountain of Fair Fortune leap high, lost in memories of his mother reading the beloved tales to him as a little lad.

“Someday you'll read these to your own child,” she'd murmured, and he closed his eyes against the sudden urge to cry.
