The Great War had killed thousands of magical folk, especially pureblood boys; like the Muggles, they had enlisted out of patriotism, then died thanks to German alchemical gas. Ellis Moor had shut down for the duration, only to find that genteel quidditch was no longer fashionable when they reopened. Ellis Moor was just starting to recover when the Crash was followed by the Grindelwald War.
“That was the end,” said Aberforth. “Your mum must have been there just before.”
“Yes,” Severus murmured, and wondered how life would have been different if his mother had played at Ellis Moor.
