Legilimency was second nature by the time Potter arrived at the school, so automatic that Severus did not need to incant to renew the spell. No one, even Dumbledore, could read his thoughts, and he moved easily between the former Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix. The child himself was ridiculously easy to read, ditto his little friends, and Severus anticipated a smooth and easy school year.
Then he had his first department meeting with Quirinius Quirrell after his return from the Balkans, and for the first time in years found himself encountering a blank wall.
