Protective spells, a dosing schedule designed to immunize against poison, special clothing and toiletries – all were helpful, and all saved Severus' life at one time or another. However, even those might not be enough if the Dark Lord himself decided that his “most faithful servant” was no longer of use. The man had never been stable, and Severus knew that his mood could and would change in a heartbeat.
It was easy enough to equip his second-best bedroom at Spinner's End as a makeshift clinic, with bandages and medications. Choosing an unobtrusive portkey, though – that required some serious thought.
