“Are you all right?”
Severus did not look up at the soft words. “Why should I not be all right, Poppy? I’ve lived to see a New Year. Shouldn’t that be enough reason to celebrate?”
“Ha.” She was close enough now that he could smell the faint traces of the orange water she wore as cologne. “I know you better than that, Severus Snape. You may dissemble with the others, but we’ve worked together too long, and too closely, for me to believe you.”
He managed a tight, unhappy smile. “You know me too well.”
“Always, my dear,” she murmured.
