Severus had spent several hideous hours performing analysis spells on The Passion of St. Simon Magus, then owled an art historian in Paris who was distantly related to the Lupins. She had sent him a specially formulated cleaner and wished him luck. "Now, if the signature is indeed Van Tovenaarthuis', we have something worth preserving."

He carefully wet a rag, then dabbed at the thick brownish substance obscuring the signature. Minerva leaned closer.
