Severus could neither laugh nor cry. He sat in a silent awe, staring down into gray-blue eyes that betrayed a haunting awareness for being only a few minutes old.

The soft head rested easily in his hand, as the body did against his scarred left arm. Already those tiny, perfect fingers gripped his finger, and in that grip he felt a chain heavier than any the Wizengamot could provide, and a call stronger than any the Dark Mark had ever made.

His daughter. She would rule him for the rest of his days, and he would submit willingly.
