Pansy learned the power of a look long ago.
A well-placed glare, with enough feeling behind it, could shut anyone up. Most of her friends knew what that look meant, and none of them were stupid enough to cross her. And, if the glare didn't do it, snapping moodily always worked. It was simple, but effective.
But there was one who didn't cower away from her, and it wasn't whom she would have expected.
It made her angry, the way he wouldn’t just leave her alone when she snapped at him. When her mother was killed for Pansy’s disloyalty, he wouldn’t go away. Even when he stopped talking, he still hung around, that look of concern on his face. It annoyed her. She didn’t need help, she didn’t need pity. She could handle everything on her own. Draco certainly hadn’t been any help whatsoever.
Why are you so cold? he asked one day. Pansy wasn’t one to be caught off guard, but this day she was. It wasn’t the question itself, really; she’d long grown used to being seen that way. It was more the fact that he’d chosen that word, in particular, when she’s just recently been thinking about how warm he seemed, compared to everyone else she had ever known…
