Original poster: kcstories
Title: Getting Closer
Author: kcstories
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 431
Challenge: #42, Spring
Warnings: Scary things in forests? Flangst.
A/N: The Potterverse is JKR's, not mine. And the "forest chase" was inspired by the latest installment of carpexdraconis, so credit for unleashing this bunny goes to aoifeic. :)
He knows it’s getting closer, fast gaining up on him, its sharp claws, foul breath and glistening fangs approaching at ever increasing speed.
Of course he would stumble now, slip on some wet leaves, because he's clumsy and tired and terrified beyond words.
And so he does, landing flat on his back, his breath knocked out of him.
He squints his eyes shut, grits his teeth, clenches his fists and waits.
That beast, whatever it is, will have him soon and his last remaining hope is that it'll at least be quick about it.
Merciful.
Though that's probably too much to expect. Their kind enjoys the kill too much, and someone once told him (probably Hermione because she researches the strangest things) that to them, fear makes blood taste even sweeter.
Just as all hope is lost, he's vaguely aware of a voice in the nearby distance and the next thing he knows, the predator is gone, literally blown to smithereens in front of his eyes.
He whips his head around
One of them is standing there.
Though not quite.
A hood is pulled down to reveal familiar platinum blonde hair, almost silver in the moonlight.
"Draco."
He's on his feet before he knows it, drawing from a strength he didn't know he still possessed, and soon his rescuer is right in front of him, seething with rage.
"Could you be any more of a blithering idiot, Potter?! You almost got yourself killed!"
Harry nearly laughs, out of relief and confusion and happiness and a thousand other emotions he couldn’t find the words for even if he still had the energy to look. "Sorry?"
"Right. Take care of yourself, Potter, and for Merlin’s sake, watch your back! It won't be long now." His voice almost cracks and he looks thin and extremely tired. They both do.
Harry takes a step closer, ready to lean in. "Draco, I lo--"
But with a crack, he’s gone again, vanished into thin air.
Harry sighs sadly. But he understands. This isn't the time. They have to keep moving. And no one can see them together or find out about this.
He reaches into his pocket, his hand closing around the pendant.
They'll destroy this tonight. The last Horcrux. Then Voldemort's next and it'll be only a matter of time before this hell ends, before he and Draco can be together again. This time for real and for good.
"When this is all over, Potter, I'll show you spring in Naples."
Harry smiles. "Yes, Draco," he says to the once again silent forest. "You will."
