Summary: Draco contemplates how much his life has changed in the past year.
Draco couldn't believe how much his life had changed over the course of the past twelve months.
Near the end of his sixth year at Hogwarts, he had been fearful and frantic, trying desperately to accomplish the task given him by the Dark Lord. His mission was made more difficult by the fact that Harry Potter had suspected he was up to no good, making it necessary to dodge the Gryffindor in order to get any work done.
Then had come that awful night on the Astronomy Tower, when he'd had Dumbledore at wand point but had been unable to kill the old man, rendering him a failure in the Dark Lord's eyes and effectively sealing his mother's fate. Snape had gotten him out of there and away from the castle, but he had been unable to risk helping Draco further. Instead, Snape had abandoned Draco to his own devices soon after they made their escape.
After several weeks on the run, dodging Death Eaters and Aurors alike, Draco had finally come to the realization that he was better off choosing to help Potter's side, and he had swallowed his pride and his fright and had surrendered himself to Remus Lupin.
Lupin had delivered Draco to the headquarters of the Order, and he had undergone a battery of interrogations, both with Veritaserum and without it. Finally satisfied that he was sincere in his wish to help their cause, Draco had been given free run of Grimmauld Place, where he encountered Potter on a regular basis.
Potter, of course, had let Draco know, frequently and loudly, just how much he was despised and still under suspicion. Draco had endured the verbal abuse in stoic silence. He felt he deserved no less than Potter's utter contempt.
However, as time passed and he and Potter were forced to work together and cooperate more and more, the animosity died down to be replaced by apathy, then finally a grudging acceptance.
It was sometime after Potter's birthday, but before their seventh year at school was scheduled to begin, when an opportunity had presented itself, and Potter and the Order had seized the day, striking down the Dark Lord and effectively ending the War.
For that reason, classes at Hogwarts began as planned, and Draco and Harry had continued their uneasy truce. As weeks went by, they eventually formed a tentative friendship and were soon comfortable in one another's company. By the time the Yule Ball rolled around, no one was more surprised, nor more pleased, than Draco was when Harry shyly asked if they could go together.
Draco recalled that night fondly. They had danced in one another's arms and had fumbled through their first kiss. Their relationship had progressed steadily after that, until they were firmly entrenched as a couple. It hadn't been a completely smooth journey; their first row had been a big one, but they managed to work things through.
Now, here they were, some twelve months later, standing atop the Astronomy Tower and discussing the graduation ceremony, which was to take place on the morrow. As Harry began to talk about what they could do after school, Draco smiled indulgently. They were making plans for the future when a year ago, he didn't even think he'd have a future. Clasping his boyfriend's hand in his own, Draco sighed happily as he contemplated what a difference a year made.
