Not Quite Paradise
Harry entered the bedroom quietly. He watched Draco sleep. In the light from the fire it was easy to forget Draco's strident tone during their earlier fight. Their relationship had never been one full of wine and roses. It was more one of frequent outbursts, hasty accusations and frosty silences. They loved as fiercely as they fought and while chaotic, it worked.
As he stood there, Harry knew with utter certainty that he would move mountains to be with Draco. He'd left the flat in a huff and spent most of the evening sitting on a bench in the park people watching. He'd seen happy and sad people, those with and without partners. Some of the couples seemed the portrait of perfection, holding hands and walking down the flower lined path, each touch a gesture of familiarity. Harry longed for that.
Then suddenly with heart stopping clarity, Harry realized he had it already. He knew Draco could be an annoying prat, but he wasn't without his own faults. Tonight's fight had been about Harry forgetting dinner with Narcissa. When Harry tried to apologize, Draco had exploded. Harry knew Draco was right for being upset.
They'd made these plans earlier in the week and Harry had immediately jotted a note in his planner. But once again, Harry had misplaced his planner that morning and consequently worked late and missed dinner. Now, Draco's parting line played over and over in his head. "I'm not looking for paradise, Potter. I simply need to be as important in your life as your precious job. No, I need to be more important and I don't think I ever shall be." The look on Draco's face had shocked Harry and yet, he had to have the last word. Like it was a kind of a competition or a schoolyard challenge.
" You needn't be a self-righteous arse to express yourself, you know." he'd spat back before Apparating to the park. Now, as he had in the moments immediately following, Harry felt he'd taken the cowardly way out by just leaving. He just hoped that Draco would forgive him...again.
He sighed quietly and stripped down to his boxers. He slid into bed and spooned up against the sleeping man, the feeling sublime until Draco stiffened before pulling away just enough to turn and face Harry.
"I didn't think you'd be back this time," Draco said sleepily.
"I'm sorry. You were right; I was an insensitive prick," Harry replied, reaching over to tuck a wisp of hair behind Draco's ear. "I'll try to be better."
Draco nodded. "We'll talk tomorrow when I'm not so knackered."
Harry pulled Draco close, shifting so Draco's head was on his chest. He knew he'd never leave. What they had wasn't perfect, but it was what they needed. They were men who'd been forced to grow up before their time, and now were learning to trust after a lifetime of being used as means to an end. Harry kissed Draco's head and pulled him closer. No, he'd never leave; he needed this man as much as he needed air to breathe, and Harry knew he'd not have it any other way.
