First Year
Their first year at Hogwarts had been rife with teasing, taunting and hexing. Therefore, it was no surprise that Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy would take advantage of April Fool's Day to try to one-up each other.
Draco struck first, when he came up behind Harry in the corridor, slapping him on the back and saying, "Having a nice day, Potty?" in that snide tone he was so well known for.
Harry didn't know why everyone kept giggling at him for the next hour. That is, until his best friend Ron Weasley pointed out that he was wearing a 'Hex Me' sign on his back.
Harry retaliated later that day by charming a sign to Malfoy's back that read 'Curse Me'.
"POTTER!"
Second Year
Their second year at Hogwarts was more of the same. Things heated up this year, as they had a new arena to compete in: Quidditch.
Throughout the year, Harry and Draco engaged in their obligatory snarking at one another while simultaneously trying to out do each other at Quidditch.
April Fool's Day saw Harry's broom catch fire the instant he stepped onto the pitch carrying it.
Malfoy's mocking laughter could be heard over the entire pitch. That is, until he mounted his own broom and had it snap in half beneath him when he had barely cleared the ground, spilling him to the turf in an ungainly heap.
"POTTER!"
Third Year
Their third year at Hogwarts saw an escalation in the battles between them. Points were deducted and detentions served.
As April Fool's Day approached, the entire school was waiting in breathless anticipation of what would occur. Even the professors were keeping a close eye on Potter and Malfoy.
However, that didn't prevent Draco from hexing Harry's pumpkin juice at breakfast on the first of April. Harry choked and spit the offending liquid everywhere. It was vile!
He was avenged at dinner that evening, when Malfoy's mashed potatoes exploded in his face, clinging in sticky gobbets to his blond hair.
"POTTER!"
Fourth Year
Their fourth year at Hogwarts brought more of the same. By this time, however, their Houses were getting a bit tired of things, as Harry and Draco caused points to be deducted from Gryffindor and Slytherin on a regular basis.
Hermione Granger tried to discourage Harry from the annual April Fool's Day pranks. Harry assured her he would do nothing unless Malfoy started it.
On the morning of April first, Harry awoke with green hair. Slytherin-green hair.
When he saw Malfoy in the Great Hall at breakfast time, he pointed his wand at the blond and muttered a hex.
Draco flinched, but he didn't feel any different. He smirked at his nemesis...until he heard the laughter of the other students. He looked down at himself, then reached up to pat his hair.
"Wh-what have you done to my hair?" he asked in a quivering voice.
Harry smirked back. "In Muggle terms, I believe it's called a 'poodle perm'."
"POTTER!"
Fifth Year
Their fifth year at Hogwarts was no different.
By now, the infamous 'Potter and Malfoy Battles' had reached epic proportions. Harry and Draco argued, pranked and hexed one another repeatedly, landing themselves in detention and losing points for their respective Houses.
When April first rolled around, the castle itself seemed to be holding its breath, as were all of its occupants.
Once again, Harry had promised Hermione he wouldn't start anything with Malfoy, and the day passed uneventfully.
Uneventfully, that is, until dinner in the Great Hall that evening, which is when a flick of Draco's wand caused Harry to suddenly sprout large, furry donkey ears.
"Look at that jackass!" yelled someone from the Slytherin table. Draco guffawed with the rest of his House, until he found himself sporting the twitching nose and whiskers of a...ferret.
"POTTER!"
Sixth Year
Their sixth year at Hogwarts brought an escalation in tensions, as a war loomed in the future, and Harry and Draco's mutual antagonism reached a fever pitch.
This year, however, Hermione was determined to put an end to the annual April Fool's Day prankfest. After the New Year, she spent weeks perfecting a potion designed to increase a person's affection for someone in direct proportion to his or her enmity for the other. She reasoned that if Harry and Malfoy could be friends for even one day, it may diffuse any future battles between the two. She enlisted the aid of Milicent Bulstrode, who was sorely vexed with Draco for costing Slytherin so many points.
Unknown to the two girls, Seamus Finnegan and Dean Thomas were also doing a little plotting. They had decided to pull an April Fool's prank of their own on both Potter and Malfoy.
"How does this work again?" asked Seamus.
"When two people take the potion, after an hour or so they will begin to lust after one another ," explained Dean.
"Does that mean they'll..."
"Not a chance!" Dean laughed. "If they liked one another, they'd go at it like rabbits, but since Harry and Malfoy hate one another, they'll just end up wanking their way to sleep while fantasizing about each other."
"I do hope Harry puts a Silencing Charm on his bed," remarked Seamus, and he and Dean laughed until their sides ached.
At breakfast on April first, Hermione and Milicent spiked Harry and Draco's pumpkin juice with their potion.
When word got around that Potter and Malfoy were overheard discussing Quidditch strategies after Potions, just like the best of mates, most of the students were vastly surprised, as well as mildly alarmed. The rest of the day passed in much the same manner. Whenever Potter and Malfoy encountered one another, they chatted quite pleasantly. Even their professors were suspicious.
At dinner that evening, Dean made sure that Harry got a 'special' piece of dessert. So did Draco, thanks to Seamus' bribery and an underhanded Blaise Zabini.
Later that evening, a flushed, uncomfortable, overheated Harry Potter excused himself from the Gryffindor common room. A walk by the lake seemed just the thing, he thought.
Someone else had had the same idea.
Harry approached to within a few feet of Draco. The two boys stood and stared at one another for a long moment. Both moved at the same time and were suddenly in each other's arms, mouths fused in a heated snog.
Draco broke off, tipped his head back and gasped.
"Potter!"
Seventh Year
Their seventh year at Hogwarts carried on much like all prior years, as Harry and Draco thought it best to keep up appearances.
One April night by the lake had led to several more clandestine meetings before the end of term. Things had progressed into a torrid affair over the summer, and by the time school started again, they were firmly entrenched in a relationship.
Not willing to reveal themselves just yet, they continued to tease and taunt one another in public. In private, however, their interactions were much more...intimate.
After a frustrating Valentine's Day, which Harry and Draco had to spend apart because they remained reluctant to come out as a couple, they began to have serious discussions about the best way to publicly announce their relationship status.
When Harry said simply, "April Fool's Day," Draco cackled in wicked glee.
"Perfect!" he declared. "After all, it will be our anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than by playing a prank on the entire school!"
April Fool's Day that year was met with much anticipation. When Potter and Malfoy failed to prank one another all day long, dinner in the Great Hall that evening was a hushed affair, as everyone waited for what was sure to be a memorable scene.
At a prearranged signal, Harry and Draco stood as one, walked around their tables and met in the center aisle of the Hall. The room became silent.
The 'rivals' stood a pace apart.
"Scared, Potter?" sneered Draco.
"Just a bit, Malfoy," admitted Harry.
Then they came together in a passionate embrace, mouths moving on one another, tongues dancing in delight, hands roaming in familiar possession.
Over the collective gasp that went up from the spectators, Malfoy was heard to moan.
"Potter..."
