Summary: Harry's afraid of the storm.
He moves with a stiffness born from dread. His eyes dart in a frantic motion around the dark room, but nothing is moving. There isn’t a sound in the room save the occasional clap of thunder, and I realize that is what has him nervous. I hadn’t thought anything of it when the first rumble occurred, not even when Harry had tensed. I figured he was startled. And he was.
Now, he just stands there fear keeping him in place, too far from the door, and not close enough to my bed. He’s frozen with indecision and I know what he’s waiting for. Permission.
“Harry, get in here before you freeze.”
He steps forward and one flash of lightning later he’s curled at my side, shivering. I throw the blankets over both of us, covering our bodies and heads. Casting a soft Lumos, I light up our bed cover fortress. His fingers curl into the bedspread and his eyes squeeze shut. I cover his hand and smile at him with a softness I’m certain he is not expecting.
His mouth parts to say something, and, before he can even utter a syllable, I press my lips to his. It’s light and quick and over in a heartbeat, but it keeps Harry quiet.
“There’s nothing wrong with being afraid, Harry. You can sleep now,” I whisper, kissing his forehead. He leans into the touch, needing the affection I’m willing to give. If only he knew, but now was not the time for flowery declarations. I stay awake just long enough to feel Harry’s frightened shivering give way to the slow rise and fall of a person in deep sleep. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll say it, but right now I am just content to hold him.
