Author's Notes: Written for slythindor100 Challenge #47 – I used the quote “I believe in soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days." From Bull Durham – and yes I exercised my option to use part of it.
Harry stood in front of the crowd, palms sweating. He never liked to be in the spotlight and had avoided it most of his life. Tonight, however, was the exception. He had rid the world of Voldemort a week prior. Tonight he was celebrating with only his friends and family; sharing his newly found freedom with those he loved. But he was also going to share with them the one thing that made everything worthwhile.
After a dubious start, Harry and Draco had worked diligently, developing a working relationship within the Order. They spent countless hours researching how to destroy the remaining Horcruxes. When Draco had discovered the spell to bring about Voldemort’s demise, in an ancient tome, Harry had grabbed him in a bone crushing hug and before he had time to consider the repercussions, he kissed Draco. When he realized what he was doing, he stepped back. He had expected some yelling and perhaps a well placed hex or two. What he had not expected was for Draco’s features to soften and for him to return the kiss. Twice. From that kiss a romance had blossomed that took them both by surprise. Harry had insisted that they keep it quiet. He was already aware that Draco was second only to him on Voldemort’s ten most hated wizards list and he was not willing to place him in any more danger. Draco protested, but Harry had won that argument. Now that the war was over, Harry was ready to tell the world how he felt about the blond.
Harry stepped up to the podium, thanking everyone for attending. He told them all how much they meant to him and he thanked them all for their support. Suddenly his voice was softer and filled with emotion, as he continued.
“I never wanted to be famous. I would much rather have lived a quiet life with my parents and not have ever heard of Voldemort or the Prophecy that fueled his hatred of me. All my life I looked for something to believe in; something to hold dear. I’m really just a regular bloke. I wanted to believe in happily ever after and that every cloud has a silver lining. It took me a long time to discover it was okay for me to believe in myself and that my dreams really were important. It took someone special to make me admit that I believe in loving someone so much it hurts. I believe in opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. And that in spite of how we begin or how we get there, it’s the end of the story that matters."
He reached out his hand out to an astonished Draco, grasped his arm and pulled the blond to his side. Smiling widely he finished his speech, “It’s no one’s business but our own how and when we found our way to each other. What matters is that without Draco’s love and support, I would never have found the belief I needed to vanquish Voldemort. Thank you all for attending, enjoy the party, have fun. I intend to have a wonderful time showing my boyfriend just how much I believe in love!"
With that Harry side-along Apparated Draco and himself to his flat, leaving behind a roomful of gobsmacked family and friends. Harry knew that he would have a lot of explaining to do the next time he saw everyone. But tonight it didn’t matter. Tonight was about showing Draco that good things come to those who wait.
