Letters: Merrill
OOC: Backdated. Sent from Crestwood on 19 Bloomingtide, shortly before the mission team heads back to Skyhold.
Sister Nightingale,
We found the cause of the bodies. A cabal of rogue mages had set up in some caves beneath the old city and were sacrificing unwilling people and animals. They will never harm anyone again. We made quite sure they were dead, but nearly all of the team is very injured. Buffy's healing ability was quite a help, initially, but it was one of the odd new powers and seems to have disappeared as quickly as it came.
Your people took the majority of the injuries, after an ambush failed. They were very stealthy, I promise, but were forced out of cover when the rest of us came under fire. Zevran took a very nasty bloodletting spell that was intended for me. Ezio and Lucy also took very serious injuries, but Mordecai was the worst. It took a great deal of magic and a number of potions to keep him alive. We will be a bit slower traveling back to allow the injured their rest. The less injured helped convince a merchant to divert to Skyhold and allow the most serious to ride in his wagons. I promise to pay him more when we arrived.
I am so, so sorry to bring everyone back in such a state.

The mission on my own was a disaster. We stopped a group of dangerous mages in Crestwood, but almost everyone was very hurt. Zevran jumped in front of a spell meant for me. Did you threaten him? I hope you didn't threaten him for my sake. And we barely kept Mordecai alive. He has some very odd spirit spells on him, that I think you both ought to look at, but they may have helped save his life. He and Ezio were both very nice on the journey up, even though Zevran warned me about them, so I do hope you can help them when we get back. And Lucy is so kind and brave. I can see how her people back home must be very fond of her. I hate to have to tell her siblings how injured she was. We will be a bit longer getting back than I thought, but we are on the way.

Oh Varric, I led my very first mission for the Inquisition (well, co-led with Zevran, do you remember Zevran?) and it was such a disaster. Everyone is hurt, or almost everyone. We did help Crestwood get rid of some wicked mages and protected the herds from a pack of wolves, so I hope they will appreciate the Inquisition again, but I don't know what good I am doing here.
