It hadn't been a terrible day, overall. The party had been amazing, and after the brief period of feeling awful when he realized Ella would not be there, Chad had managed to have a good time. It was Scottie's birthday too, after all, and even though there was an Ella-shaped hole in the day for him, he wasn't going to make a Chad-shaped hole in the day for anyone else.
But afterward, he had gone back to his unfinished ship-house, needing to be alone, to find his journal, to write to Ella. He'd taken cupcakes, but they were still untouched when he finally put down his journal. He unwrapped one and started to eat it, leaning back against the colorful wall of one of the unfinished rooms in his new house. He hadn't wanted to curl up in his bed, had just wanted to sit, to be alone, to look at the colors. A colorful room couldn't be tainted with sad, no matter how much he cried. Maybe he should call this the sad room, and paint it with all the colors of the rainbow.
And Orla was on her way over, with her colorful hair. They could have cupcakes and say goodbye, and maybe he'd be able to make her feel a little better if she was sad after talking to Ella, and then he'd be off. He'd notified his sailors to make the ship ready, and it would be very late tonight - probably not until very early tomorrow morning, actually - before it was ready, but he wasn't going over there yet. Ella had said two hours, and that was a good idea. It gave Chad the time he needed to say goodbye. His friends were used to his spontaneous trips seaward, especially at this time of the year - April almost always sucked, though not usually this early in the month - but not Orla, he didn't know how she'd feel about it. Hopefully she'd understand.
