Happy Birthday.
Characters: Rodolphus, Bellatrix, and Guests
Date: 14 August 1999
Location: Lestrange Manor; Lenton Abbey, Nottingham
Rating: TBD
Summary: Rodolphus and Bellatrix celebrate their respect birthdays with a private dinner party.
Status: In Progress
Rodolphus took a sip of his wine and paced in the drawing room, checking the time. It was a quarter past seven in the evening, and they could be expecting their guests at any moment. In one hand he held the wine goblet, a heavy antique piece made of solid silver and embossed with the Lestrange family crest, and in the other he carried a small thin package that contained Bella's birthday gift. He had not seen her long enough prior to the party to hand it over, and he only hoped now that she would be on time. Having to serve guests was horrible and tedious enough, but to do it alone would be downright miserable.
They had not gone all out for their get together, because they never did. Neither of them saw a point in trivial things like decoration or music. If one had the right people on hand, and just the right sort of atmosphere, well, hardly anything else was needed. Then again, neither of them were very social creatures, and so they saw little use in brightening up a situation that they most often preferred not to be in. As it where, however, this was a rather special occasion and the one time in the year that they indulged in a real celebration of any kind. Mostly, really, because Bella's favorite person was, well, Bella and she loved getting gifts. If not for that Rodolphus would have been done with the entire ordeal.
Now there only stood minutes between another tense evening and him. The lavish dinner was prepared and waiting downstairs to be brought into the formal dining room course by course. The dining room (which held only one long ebony table and high backed black chairs with red cushions, a china cabinet, and a chandelier and nothing more) looked rather well put together with their antique bone China and fine heirloom silverware. Everything was dusted and neat, and nice bottles of aged wine were set out along with finger foods for guests to nibble at while waiting for dinner. They were not outrageous people who relied upon a lot of glitz and glamor to get into people's good graces, but they did like nice things and it showed in the simple, but elegant way they put things together.
Outside a hired hand was waiting at the gate to let the invitation-only guests in, since apparation was not allowed on the grounds because of wards. The path from the gate through the road that wound around the gardens was lit by simple torches, and one of the house elves would great them at the door. Dinner would be promptly at 7:30, and still Bellatrix hadn't shown up.
Another sip of wine, and more pacing. Rodolphus was getting nervous, and trying hard to calculate how long he had to wait before bailing out on his own birthday. Was that even polite? Certainly it wasn't, but he wasn't sure he cared. It was his day, he could do whatever he damned well pleased. As long as it didn't upset his wife.
