Victory Celebration

“Congratulations, Potter. Well done.”
Harry spun, coming face to face with Malfoy, the last person he’d expected to see at Kingsley’s victory celebration. “Thanks, but Kingsley’s the one who did all the hard work,” he replied.
Malfoy shook his head. “That’s not what I hear. The word on the street is that you endorsed him at every opportunity. It was very wise use of your influence to use it on behalf of the future Minister. I’m impressed.”
Harry flushed. “Well, I believe he’s the best person for the job.”
Malfoy nodded slowly. “My parents may not agree, but I do. Which is why I campaigned for him, too.”
“You did?” Harry blinked. Since Kingsley had campaigned on a platform of wizarding equality, no matter blood status, he was surprised.
“Mm hm.” Malfoy smiled. “I actually ran his Rural campaign office.”
“Wow.” He couldn’t be lying, that was too easy to check. Harry smiled. “Brilliant.”
“What would be really brilliant is if you’d run for something.” Malfoy inclined his head. “Not Minister of course, not yet, but you’d be a great candidate.”
“I’m more of a behind the scenes sort, I think,” Harry replied.
“No, I don't think so. You’re a doer, Potter. You always have been.” Malfoy leaned close. “If you ever decide to do something politically, let me know. I’d campaign for you.”
“Th...thanks,” Harry stammered. “That’s really...nice of you.”
“Not really,” Malfoy confided. “There’s something in it for me, too.”
“Oh? What’s that?”
“I get to work closely with a very attractive man who’s just come out.” Malfoy looked Harry up and down, his gaze admiring. “Very little downside to that.”
“I take it you saw that article in The Prophet, then?” Harry asked. “The one claiming I’m gay.”
“Naturally. I’m surprised there wasn’t more coverage, actually.” Malfoy smirked. “That was very interesting news to many members of wizarding society.”
Harry chuckled. “Having a friend on the editorial board came in handy, I guess.”
“Ah yes, Granger. Shame I couldn’t have prevailed in her to help me when Astoria and I were going through our very public breakup.” Malfoy sighed, looking away.
“Yeah, I heard about that. Sorry,” Harry murmured.
Malfoy shrugged. “Don’t be, it was definitely for the best. Anyway, I’ve followed your life very closely, Potter. I always have. You couldn’t find anyone better to run a campaign for you.”
“If I ever decide to run you’ll be the first to know,” Harry chuckled, intrigued despite himself.
“Good.” Malfoy began to move away. “See you, Potter.”
“Er, wait!” Harry called out when Malfoy was almost out of earshot.
Malfoy spun. “Yes?”
“Would you like to go and get a celebratory drink with me?” Harry blurted. “This event’s almost done but it’s still early. We could...talk.”
“It is,” Malfoy agreed. “But, as you indicate, the night is young. And I’m amenable to talking, or other activities.”
Harry licked his lips. “Yeah, and as you said earlier, I am a doer.”
“I certainly hope so,” Malfoy murmured, offering his arm. “Shall we?”
Oh yes. Let’s. Harry smiled. “Definitely.”
