Who: Sadie and Ty
When: Thursday, Oct 5, afternoonish
Where: the police station
Status: Complete
It was the day of the full moon, a thing that Ty wished he didn’t have to know, and the vibe around the station was a little edgy. Grady had everybody on the list on call. If it was anything like last month, they would have a lot to do. The daytime had been pretty quiet so far, though, and Ty was using the lull to catch up on some paperwork. He generally stayed pretty on top of that kind of thing, but there was still a lot being investigated from the week before, and it was a lot of typing.
He was taking a bit of a break from it, and wandered up to the front room to get a fresh cup of coffee. As he poured it, Ty glanced toward the big front windows of the building, silently cursing the rain. He hoped to hell it stopped before night really settled in. It was already turning everything into a mud pit, it could really cause problems with visibility too. He hummed an acknowledgement as their new dispatch, JC, told him she was stepping into the back for a few minutes. Ty plopped down in the chair and sipped his coffee, trying not to dread the next twelve hours or so.
Sadie wasn't terribly concerned about the full moon, and the day itself was really the last thing on her mind. She had a lot going on at school, not to mention checking in on her family... those living in Point Pleasant, and elsewhere. Talking to Lucy on the phone briefly that morning reminded Sadie to stop by the police station on her way home from cheer practice. She didn't expect anyone to have any information for her. Jared would have called or stopped by if there was anything new about Danny, but... it didn't feel right to just let it go. She needed to at least ask, to remind the police that her cousin was still missing.
It was a bit of a dreary day, but she was willing to tolerate the rain given it wasn't snow or fog. Hopefully the weather would perk up a bit before the football game tomorrow night. Sighing, Sadie parked outside of the station and walked inside, her gaze immediately falling upon Ty, who was sitting at the front desk. "Hey," she greeted with a small smile. "I'm not used to seeing you up here."
Ty had been daydreaming a bit when Sadie walked in, and recognition didn’t kick in until a second later. He’d of course seen her around the station for years here and there, but that had been when she’d still been married to Jared. It was kind of completely different seeing her now that her ex husband was his secret boyfriend, and Ty couldn’t quite hide the surprise in his expression. “Oh uh, hey Sadie,” he greeted back, catching himself and smiling back faintly. He immediately hoped ‘Sadie’ wasn’t overly familiar, but ‘Ms. Gaines’ just sounded weird in his head. “Yeah, just ... covering a break for JC for a minute ... you heard Rose retired, right?” Did he have I’m gay and fucking your ex, who’s apparently bisexual, surprise! written all over his face? Because it felt like it.
"Yes, I heard," Sadie said with a small smile, oblivious to Ty's internal discomfort about her ex-husband. While his newfound sexuality would have taken her by surprise, she wouldn't have been shocked to hear he had a sex life. They had been divorced for awhile, and Jared was a good looking man. It wouldn't have made much sense for it to upset Sadie at this point in their lives. She glanced around the small office, but Ty seemed to be the only deputy there at the moment. Not that Sadie was disappointed, but Jared was a bit easier to be candid with. Or Grady, but she doubted he would tell her much. "I just wanted to pop in on my way home and see if there was any news... Jared's done his best to keep me updated, but I know you all have been pretty busy in the past few weeks."
He watched her look around and it was easy to deduce that she was looking for Jared. He knew they’d talked more recently because of Danny’s disappearance, so that made sense. “Yeah, sorry, he’s out on a call right now,” Ty said first and it sounded a little forced to his ears. He chided himself that where Jared currently was wasn’t at all the point, then shook his head a bit, his expression turning more grim. “Nothing new, I’m sorry to say. We still have volunteer search parties out looking as the weather permits, and Grady sent a BOLO to all the other state counties, but we haven’t heard anything.” It was sad and it sucked that it was affecting someone he peripherally knew, but it wasn’t a new story for Point Pleasant. They had whole books full of disappearances. A little softer, Ty added, “You holding up okay?”
It made her cheeks warm a little bit that Ty seemed to know she was looking for Jared. She didn't want him to think she didn't trust him to fill her in on any new news. Again, it wasn't surprising to hear they didn't have anything new to tell her. Deep down Sadie had resigned herself to the fact that Danny was probably gone and not coming back. The most she could hope for was amnesia or black outs, and those possibilities seemed super slim. But... at least they were still trying. Sadie knew they probably had more than one filing cabinet devoted to missing persons. His question prompted Sadie to sigh a touch, but with a smile. "I'm doing all right, thanks. You would think I would be used to this by now." She cleared her throat and refocused. "How are you doing? I heard things got pretty crazy with that fog. Are you all right?"
Ty didn’t think anybody ever got used to the people they loved vanishing. He knew he would be beside himself if it ever happened to him, if his auntie or his mother went missing. Or someone else, but he couldn’t even entertain that thought, not for a second. Her question about the fog made him instantly flash back to being cornered in the police cruiser with Jared pointing a gun at his face, saying in that low, dangerous growl that he would blow Ty’s fucking brains out if he didn’t cuff himself -- a scene that had showed up in more than one nightmare since then. His eyes glazed over for a beat before he came back into the present and blinked at Sadie. “Well, y’know, your ex throws a mean right jab,” Ty said, gesturing at his face with a wan smile. A lot of the swelling had gone down in his nose, but it was still obviously healing from a break, so there was no dodging that one. “But none the worse for wear. Can’t say the same for everyone, so I’m counting my blessings. Did you have any trouble that day? Hope you stayed inside.”
Sadie hadn't exactly been referring to missing people... but her family in general. She had a bad habit of losing people, but she wasn't there to dump all over Ty. She wasn't the only person in town with a sob story. Her blonde brow arched a touch at the state of his face, now that she knew what had caused it. "I was inside all day, but I heard about the pollution causing some crazy reactions in people. Jared hit you? That's so... unlike him. But again, I guess no one was immune to it. Is he all right?" Jared could be intimidating to people who didn't know him well, but to Sadie, it was a bit of a shock that he would get violent at all, even if technically it wasn't his fault. He'd always been something of a teddy bear in her eyes.
If it shocked her that Jared had busted his nose, she probably would’ve been horrified to watch him pummel the cruiser and pull his pistol on Ty. He decided not to describe any of that to Sadie; if Jared wanted her to know, he would tell her. It had been a fucked up day for everyone, but it felt kind of private to Ty, something they’d gone through together. “Yeah, he’s okay,” he said. “Sustained some bruises, we had to subdue quite a few people that day, but nothing serious. It wasn’t anything anybody could help, a couple of minutes in that shit drove everyone out of their minds. We’re lucky it wasn’t worse than it was, honestly. Glad you were okay, though.”
Sadie hadn't realized it had gotten that bad, and she was relieved to hear Jared hadn't been too terribly hurt. She knew he was more than capable of taking care of himself, but this town wasn't like any other. It could damage even the strongest if they weren't careful. "It's always something in this town, isn't it?" Sadie shook her head. Her lips twitched briefly. "It's difficult imagining Jared getting violent in any kind of capacity. It just seems so... against his nature, if you know what I mean? But, I'm glad you're both okay. If there's anything more I can do, in terms of Danny, will you let me know? I feel a little useless at the moment."
Ty nodded along with the first part of what she said, his own mouth set in a bemused half-smile. Most of the other cops on the force hated hearing shit like that, but Ty knew there was something about this town. Sadie was absolutely right, it was always something, and that something was usually weird as fuck. She was also right about Jared’s nature, but Ty didn’t want to talk about what Jared was like when he was violent. Those had been extreme circumstances, that was the important part. “Of course,” he said, giving her a more decisive nod. “And we’ll keep you updated on the searches and whatnot.” Some folks insisted on going out looking for their loved along with the search parties, some couldn’t stand it. Ty was holding out some hope that that Danny had just flown the coop, especially if he was having mental issues like Jared had said ... but it wasn’t a lot. “If you hear anything at all, let us know.”
Sometimes Sadie wondered if the police force would be more effective if they were more open minded about the truth in Point Pleasant. Maybe some of them were, but she understood cops had to harbor some sense of skepticism. Maybe on some level Sadie did as well, but deep in her gut, she knew the truth. This town was a small one... Danny would have been found by now if he was still around, even if it was only his body. He was gone, whether by choice or... otherwise. She nodded and hesitated for only a moment before offering Ty a faint smile. "Thank you. Will you tell Jared I stopped by? If he's out working, I don't want to bother him."
“Of course,” Ty told her, giving her a small smile back. He would tell him. And probably watch Jared’s expression too closely to gauge his reaction. Not out of jealousy, really, but ... Jared had been in love with Sadie for a long time. The divorce had torn him up, maybe even more than she knew about, and he hadn’t been out of that state long yet. There had to still be feelings there, and Ty still didn’t quite know how to fully handle that like a good boyfriend. He’d never dated a divorced guy before, especially not a bisexual one. Women had things that Ty couldn’t give Jared, and ... ugh. He was most definitely overthinking it all like an idiot, but that was sort of what he did. “Be safe out there, Sadie.”
Sadie felt like she and Jared were at a good place together... maybe not exactly as friends, but something close to it. She had gotten lucky there, that there was no intense bitterness. Even if she had fallen out of love with Jared, she still cared about him, and she wanted him to stay safe, especially in Point Pleasant. Sadie knew she would feel immense guilt if anything happened to him, given she was the reason he'd come here in the first place. "Thanks, Ty," Sadie said, taking one last glance around before she sighed and smiled. "I'll see you." She lifted her hand in a small wave and turned to leave to head home.
