Who: Jules and Sebastian
Where: The high school
When: Late afternoon, Tuesday October 3
Status: Complete
Jules was starting to feel like maybe things were getting back to normal. Normal-ish. She hadn’t had anymore weird incidents since Jasper had given her that hex bag thing, and she had kept it in her purse like he told her to. Maybe it was actually working. She just needed to make sure none of her friends caught sight of it, because god, she so didn’t want to have to explain what it was. She could lie, but that was as much of a pain in the ass as telling the truth was. A part of Jules just wanted to life to go back to the way it was like, three weeks ago. Where she was totally oblivious to the really scary stuff and just enjoying her senior year of high school like a normal fucking teenager. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a possibility because while magic was apparently real, time travel probably wasn’t.
Today she was determined to not think about hex bags, or mirrors or even Jasper. Jules needed to focus on her responsibilities, like cheer practice, which went fairly well today. Since the weather was decent, they got to practice outside near the end of the football field. They finished up around the same time as the football team, and Jules chatted with her friends as they all headed back inside to shower, change and go home.
After Jules was ready go, she left the locker room alone, slipping her duffel bag over her shoulder. She headed down the hallway and spotted Sebastian who was only a few steps ahead of her. “Hey,” she called out, smiling as she caught up to him. “You guys looked good out there.” They weren’t the best team in the area, but they were doing pretty well this season.
Sebastian always hung back when it came to cleaning up after practice, finding a reason to hold off till he got home whenever possible. He’d always done it, so no one questioned it anymore, but it kept him sane. It did however mean that he was still sweaty and gross when Jules called out to him, wearing a hoodie with his track pants, backpack thrown over one shoulder.
“Thanks,” he grinned. “I feel like we have a good shot at winning this thing, so long as we keep our heads in the game.” There was nothing wrong with a little optimism. Sometimes believing they could win was the push they needed to actually make it happen. “You guys have a new dance for us?” He’d seen them on the side, just like the rest of the guys, even if they weren’t quite the same distraction for him. He just liked the music.
Jules was always supportive of the teams she cheered for, though she had very little interest in the sports beyond school pride and her friends and all that. It did suck when they lost though, since almost everyone got super mopey over it. Post-game milkshakes at Moxie's was always more fun when it was a celebration. "We might," she teased. "You'll just have to pay attention on Friday night to see, I guess." Jules was honestly more concerned with the dance on Saturday than the football game. She had a dress now, but that was it, and she was starting to wonder if she would be going alone. That would be super humiliating. "You're going to Homecoming, right?" Jules asked, glancing at Sebastian.
“If I miss a catch because because I’m watching you shake your ass, coach ‘ll kill me,” Sebastian teased. He was lucky that he tended to have laser like focus when it came to football, even if he wasn’t interested in the cheerleaders. There could be a cute guy coming to take him down and he wouldn’t even notice. All that mattered was catching the ball. “That’s the plan, though I kinda forgot to ask someone,” he said with an embarrassed laugh as he slipped his hands into his hoodie pocket. “What about you? Who’s the lucky guy?”
Jules couldn't help but laugh a little. "I promise not to shake my ass too much in your direction." It was nice to flirt with a boy she was used to flirting with, even if they had broken up a long time ago. She didn't have to hide with Sebastian, and she didn't care much at all if people saw them. Let them think they were getting back together or something. That would be a good distraction, wouldn't it? She was a little surprised that he had 'forgotten' to ask someone to the dance. Did that mean no one had asked him? A few guys had asked Jules, but she had said no.... whether out of the desire to wait for someone 'better', or out of guilt about Jasper, she didn't know. It wasn't like Jasper had expressed any interest in going. Not that she'd asked him either, but still... ugh. Boys. "I don't have a date yet," Jules admitted before throwing up her hands. "I know! I know, it's crazy. Things have just been weird lately and I got a dress but I just... haven't found a date yet. I'm running out of time. I can't go alone, you know? What if I'm Homecoming Queen and I show up dateless? Unacceptable."
“Thank you. Wouldn’t want to be too distracted,” Sebastian grinned and gave her a little wink. It was easy to flirt with Jules. It always had been. It was how he’d fallen into dating her in the first place. There was chemistry, just not the right sort. He enjoyed having her close, holding her hand, the quiet little laughs between shared kisses. But the desire for anything more wasn’t there. He’d never been able to explain it, not the way he needed to, but eventually she’d figured it out, or at least enough to realize they weren’t going to work. Sebastian was still glad they’d managed to come back around to being friends. He hadn’t been sure she’d ever forgive him for leading her on, so it felt like a tiny miracle. He looked over at her, brows raised at the admission that she didn’t have a date either. “So… if you’re really worried about it, you know I’ll take you,” he smiled. “Just as a friend, I mean. But I don’t think anyone’s going to judge you for going without a date. That was my plan anyways. Just go, have fun, see if I can find an afterparty.” He turned, walking backwards so he could see her. “I’m surprised though… who were you hoping would ask you?”
Jules could hold a grudge without much effort at all, and for a ridiculous amount of time. She had been pretty bound and determined to destroy Sebastian for breaking up with her, but then she had rebounded with Jasper at that party after school was done for the summer and her bitterness toward Sebastian sort of dissipated from there. It was easy to forgive a boy for dumping her when another boy was ready to pick up the pieces, so to speak. Or at least give her some pretty amazing orgasms. That was just as good, if you asked Jules. She arched a delicate, blonde brow when he offered to take her to Homecoming. She always thought of dances as romantic, dressing up and dancing close and potential kisses. But... she couldn't have that. So maybe going with a boy she knew pretty well - as friends - would be a decent alternative. It was far better than going alone. "If you don't think people won't judge me for not having a date, then you don't know my friends very well," Jules said with an amused sort of look. "And, you know, my afterparty is going to be the only afterparty worth going to, so... I mean, if you're willing to be my date, as friends, then I'm good with that." Jules shifted the strap of her duffel bag on her shoulder and shrugged. "I don't think I was really hoping for anyone specific to ask me. It was just one of those things, you know? Like, if it doesn't feel right, then why say yes?"
“You need better friends,” Sebastian said with a look that showed he knew her friends plenty well. He sometimes wondered what they thought of him, what she’d shared with them. How easy it would be to figure him out if all the girls he’d dated got together and shared stories of the absolute nothing that happened between them. Luckily, the girls didn’t seem as loose lipped as the guys were. He’d always found that grinning and keeping his mouth shut seemed to indicate he’d done things he wouldn’t even consider. “I wasn’t going invite myself, but since you asked,” he grinned, pleased that she’d extended the invitation. “If you need anything, let me know. I think I can get my brother to hook us up.” He turned again to walk beside her, giving a little nod, his expression turning thoughtful. “I know what you mean. I thought about asking someone, but… there’s all that pressure. And if it’s not someone I really want to be with… I don’t want to end up disappointing someone. I just want to go have fun.”
Jules gave a partial eye roll. Her friends were just fine. Most of the time. She could be that friend sometimes, and she knew it, so Jules tended to give them all a break when they gave her a hard time. But it was more of a pride thing, having a date to a school dance. "I think right now everything is taken care of for the party," Jules said, "but I'll keep you in mind if anything else comes up. I think the dance should be fun enough that it sort of leaks over into the party after. I really just want to have fun too, so... if you want to go together, we can try that. No, like, expectations or pressure or anything like that. You don't even have to be stuck by my side all night," she promised with a grin. "Sound okay?"
“Perfect,” Sebastian said with an easy smile and a small sigh of relief. This might’ve technically been for her benefit, but it made things easier on him as well. Having a date, even if they were just friends, garnered less attention. That she’d also given him the freedom to do his own thing? It seemed like the best of both worlds. “I promised Mak a dance anyways.” And a few other people, because he never turned down an opportunity to dance like an idiot. “Do you think you’re up for Homecoming Queen?” He was just pleased to be on court. He didn’t need a crown, but suspected it would mean a lot to her if she got one.
Jules raised an eyebrow, assuming he meant Mak Richberg, since that was the only Mak she knew, but she had no idea Mak was even going to Homecoming. Not that Jules cared or anything. But she figured Hunter was going, and he and Mak were super close so... well, whatever. It didn't affect her in the least. Hunter was about the only thing they had in common. "Of course I'm up for Homecoming Queen," Jules said with an air of confidence. "I work my ass off, you know? School and extracurriculars and all that." Maybe her GPA wasn’t the best, but she tried, at least. Jules smirked softly and gestured to her hair. "I mean, this head is made for a tiara and I'm going for the triple crown this year. Homecoming, Winter formal and prom."
“Of course you are,” Sebastian laughed. “Aim high, shoot for the stars, and all that jazz.” He looked over at her, noting her bright eyes, her perfectly pink lips, and blonde hair that never seemed a curl out of place. He knew she was beautiful, that the girls wanted to be her and the guys wanted to be with her. And for some reason she was going to the dance with him. Not that he was a bad choice as far as arm candy went, and he might have a chance at securing the crown himself, but… Jules could do better. She was every guy’s dream but his. “What color is your dress?” he asked, trying to shake off his thoughts. “Should I try to match? Or is that tacky?”
Jules was doing her very best this week not to think about who she could be going to Homecoming with. She couldn't exactly going with who she wanted to go with, and if she went with some random guy as a real date, they might expect something from her. At least with Sebastian Jules wouldn't have to worry about getting groped or kissed or anything. But she knew he was nice, and hot and would look good in pictures and that was all she could really ask for at the moment. A small part of her was annoyed, because if the thing with Jasper had just stayed super casual and whatever, then she could do whatever she wanted, with whoever she wanted, and not feel bad about it at all. Ugh. "It's green," she said. "But like, not in your face green. More like seafoam green with a feathered skirt. It's amazing. But no, you don't have to match, just don't wear, like... purple or anything." Jules grinned. "Black is always classy, right?"
Sebastian groaned dramatically. “I was hoping to wear the purple velvet dinner jacket,” he mock pouted. “You ruin all my fun,” he added before he began to laugh. Who knew what he’d wear if he actually had his way. Something… loud. Over the top, like the ideas in his head, the things he held back. There was a tiny part of him that was jealous that she was wearing feathers and he was stuck with basic black. But then he was the one that desperately wanted to finish out the football season, so maybe giving into flamboyantly gay ideas was a bad thing. “How’s everything else going?” he asked, righting himself again, tucking away the part of him so few people got to see. “Anything new in your life?”
Oh, wasn't that a loaded question. It wasn't even just Jasper, but all the weird shit happening around her. Mirrors and the hex bag in her purse. She could tell Sebastian, sure, but Jules didn't feel like totally destroying her reputation. She wasn't sure she would tell even her closest friend, let alone an ex-boyfriend she had only sort of talked to all summer. A part of Jules wondered who else in school knew of all this stuff though. Of black eyed kids and witches hanging around selling witchy stuff from their back rooms. Did Sebastian know? "Honestly, there's nothing super exciting going on," Jules admitted after a moment. "Just gathering information for colleges and stuff. Jason keeps bringing home information on like, Ivy League schools and stuff. I just want to get out of Maine, you know? What about you?"
“Oh damn, I need to get on that,” Sebastian sighed, running his fingers through his hair. He had piles of information on colleges, but he hadn’t had the time to really dedicate this attention to it. He knew he wanted to get away though. “I’d love to get out of state. New York or California. Maybe Florida. Some place I don’t have to crawl through five feet of snow in the winter.” Some place his parents couldn’t just drop in. “Nothing else, though. It’s been quiet? Which is always a little worrisome around here.” He almost reminded her that there was a full moon on Thursday, but then thought better of it, sure that she would laugh at him. Not everyone believed there were monsters in the woods and the quickest way to ruin his reputation, other than coming out, would be for her to label him a loon.
New York or California was the dream, if you asked Jules. New York was a busy city full of sophisticated people. California was sunny with so many beaches. Honestly, the school itself was pretty secondary to the kind of social life Jules wanted to have. And maybe the rest of the country wasn't as strange as Point Pleasant was. She reached up to tighten her ponytail, even though it didn't need it. "I guess it's been quiet," she said after a moment of thought. "As quiet as Point Pleasant usually is. I'm more than happy to take advantage of that, though, since things had been kind of weird with the fog and stuff. Sucked being stuck inside for so long, so now it feels like I want to be out all the time to make up for it." Jules could only say so much. She still thought everything she had gone through was kind of crazy. Mirrors and hex bags and things. She barely trusted herself with it, let alone an ex-boyfriend/sorta friend. "Are you going straight home?"
“You’d think having school cancelled would’ve been nice, but… it was just weird,” Sebastian said with a frown. With the power out, he’d gotten bored fast. But when he’d tried to walk over to Greg’s house, he’d come closer to a panic attack than he ever had in years. And for no. good. reason. Just thinking back on it gave him the chills and his hands balled into fists in his jacket pockets. “Did you go out in it?” he asked, looking over at her. He’d seen the news reports afterwards, knew that they were blaming people’s bizarre behavior on some kind of pollution, but it was all hard to swallow. “Yeah, why? Do you need a ride?”
She had to agree with him there. Jules loved having time off of school, but not when she was forced to stay home. That sucked. especially when she'd only had Jason to talk to. That had super sucked. "I tried the first day," she admitted. "But could barely drive down the street so I gave up. Just hung out inside for the most part. But no, I don't need a ride. Just wondering what you were up to now that we're done here. I hate going straight home on a nice day." They were leaving the school building now and Jules supposed it wouldn't be too difficult to decide what to do from there. Maybe she'd text Sera and tell her that she had a date for the dance now.
“Want to go get a snack or something at Moxie’s?” Sebastian offered. “I’m not in a rush to get home and start my homework and it’d be nice to catch up.” They’d kind of circled each other all summer, running in the same group, but not really talking. It felt weird after being so close only months before. But he knew that’s how these things worked and was glad they were able to be friends now. He wasn’t always so fortunate.
"Umm..." Jules trailed off thoughtfully as she weighed her options. She couldn't assume it would be super weird to grab fries or a milkshake with her ex-boyfriend since they were going to Homecoming together, and maybe just doing something chill and casual would help make things better so they were more comfortable with each other Saturday night. "Yeah, that sounds good," Jules said with a small smile. "I'm sort of craving a chocolate milkshake anyway. Do you want to drive and bring me back to my car later, or should I just follow you?"
“Um, I’ve got all my football stuff with me, so why don’t you meet me there,” Sebastian said with a little laugh. “I promise my car will smell better by Saturday night.” Even if it wasn’t a date, he wouldn’t put her through getting all dressed up to drive around in a car that smelled like the locker room. He didn’t like to put anyone through that. “See you in a few?”
Given how many times Jules had driven around with Jasper with his car smelling like cigarettes, or pot, Jules was about to say that she didn't mind it, but... smelling a bunch of football gear as opposed to weed was not the same thing at all. And this way she could just drive straight home from Moxie's rather than come back to school, and if things got super weird between she and Sebastian, they could part ways without the awkwardness of him driving her back to her car. So she laughed and nodded, lifting her hand in a small wave as she headed across the parking lot to her own car. "Definitely. See you there."
