"Oh." Jane didn't offer condolences. Nicole didn't sound terribly grief stricken over her aunt. And frankly, Jane felt no sympathy so it was difficult to pretend to feel any. Lawyers and red tape and wills. Lord, she hoped her parents were straight forward with their estate planning. Not that Jane imagined she would have very much coming to her, but Jane didn't want to deal with the legalities of their death.
She set her coffee cup on her knee and held it loosely while lifting her free hand up to sweep some of her hair away from her face and behind her ear. "Just a few," Jane admitted. "Not many that would remember me. But there are a lot of people who were here when I was a child, and clearly they haven't left. I'm surprised to see you, to be honest." She hadn't been seeking Nicole out on purpose at least. "I think it's a happy coincidence that I decided to take the shortcut through the parking lot today, otherwise, I wouldn't have seen you sitting here. Are you only staying until you work out your aunt's will?"
