The likelihood of Jasper wanting to read for entertainment, as if he even had anything around to read, showed in the purse-lipped ‘are you serious?’ sort of look he gave Gavin. He couldn’t even browse his phone, he was pretty sure it was dead by now. Jasper was vaguely familiar with the game his dad mentioned, only because Amelia had made him play it one time, but that didn’t sound very appealing either. He knew some card games for two, and wasting some time playing War or something with his dad while the radio ran its battery down sounded okay. As okay as anything. “Come on, you’ve got some cards around here somewhere,” he said, getting up again and going to rummage through kitchen drawers.
Gavin did have a deck or two lying around somewhere and he thought with some amusement how probably everyone in the world had at least a deck - even if they never played. When Jasper found one of the decks in the junk drawer Gavin wasn't really surprised but he was happily surprised that Jasper wanted to stick around. To play cards no less. It wasn't enough to make that overwhelming feeling of dread go away but it did put a dent in it. "Let me just call your sister real quick, make sure she's okay," he murmured and gestured vaguely at the cards as he got up to get his phone. "You can shuffle while I call."
Jasper nodded at Gavin’s words as he plunked back down in his chair and took the deck out of its little paper box. “Tell her I said hey,” he added over his shoulder as Gavin walked away. Checking on Amelia was a good idea, and Jasper had the dark thought that Olivia better be fucking home with her, or Jasper was going to tear her a new one. He was pretty sure that if the power outage and the fog lasted much longer, he was going to go stir-crazy. He already felt antsy. He didn’t want to go out into it all again, it felt too risky -- it felt fucking terrifying, if he was being honest -- and this was where he was stuck, so he might as well try and make the best of it. So cards with his dad it was. Or board games, or whatever they ended up doing. And if it turned weird? So be it, it was better than his car.
