What: Patrolling
Where: Around town!
When: Wednesday noon, 9/20
Status: Complete
It was pretty cool to finally have a lady on the force, the Point Pleasant police department had been pretty male dominated since Jared first started their and would have been even more so if not for their grandmother-like dispatcher taking care of the lot. Now one of their deputies was a woman and Jared was trying to treat it like it was no big deal though a part of him thought it was pretty awesome for a variety of reasons. Of course she might not even have that 'feminine touch' or whatever, but... equality? And she knew Ty from back in the day and he hadn't said a bad word about her so that was promising.
That morning had been pretty slow and he hadn't really gotten to know Madison Pierce so it seemed pretty perfect to take her on patrol when Grady suggested it. They could shoot the shit and he show her around town - assuming she even needed that. She was a local after all, it had just been a while since she lived there. Hell, maybe she'd know some places he didn't. Kids tended to find all those nooks and crannies grownups knew nothing about. He waited for her in the car, leaving the engine on to clear the steam off the windows. It was still raining. At this point Jared felt like it would never stop.
Aside from the headache that she'd been fighting all morning, Mads was feeling pretty good. Yesterday had proven to be fruitful both professionally and socially for her. Her first day at work had gone well and the chief seemed to think she was a solid addition to his force. She was determined not to prove him wrong. Not only that, she'd reconnected with an old friend and met a charming man that she hoped to see more of in the future. Sure, the night out had been the cause of her headache (social drinking was great but it was far too easy to overdo it), but it was all worth it.
Today, Mads would be going on patrol with her co-worker Jared. She didn't know too much about the man aside from what Ty told her, but so far he was proving to be a nice guy. He had gone outside to wait for her while she grabbed herself some ibuprofen and then beelined it to the vehicle. She hopped into the car, popping a couple pills into her mouth and downing them with coffee. "The rain can stop any day now," she commented, moving forward to peer out at the sky through the windshield. It was getting pretty ridiculous.
"Yeah," Jared chuckled. "Welcome to rain city. Let's ride." The only good thing about the rain was that it tended to mean slow days. People preferred doing their illegal shit in good weather, that was just how that was. "You moved away pretty young, yeah? Need any refreshers on the lay of the land?" he asked, shooting her a smile as he got them moving out of the parking lot, raising the speed of the windshield wipers as needed.
"Take me down to rain city where the grass is wet and the weather's shitty," she sang, parodying the often enjoyed Paradise City from Guns N' Roses. She chuckled, feeling both amused and just a bit embarrassed. "Sorry, couldn't help myself." It was just to easy.
Hearing his question, Mads shrugged some. "Yeah, back when I was 7, but I visited a lot." She tilted her head to the side slightly, considering the second part of his question. "Not really sure, honestly. So far everything seems familiar. I find that the town itself doesn't seem to change much, just the people." People would come and go all the time, some willingly and some not. "So how long have you resided in this lovely town of ours, Gaines?"
That song took him back and he laughed along with her, shaking his head at her lyric-butchering. She was right about the town though. It hadn't changed much in the last few years at least, a few new buildings and a few new stores but nothing major. "I've been here what... Five years now?" he drawled, squinting a little as he thought about it. He felt like he'd been saying five years for a while, maybe it was six by now? But no, the numbers added up so five it was. "It's usually nicer this time a year, hard to enjoy the autumn colors when it rains this much."
"Right? This rain is ruining the autumn aesthetic, but at least the turning of the leaves only just started." Now that was always something to look forward it. It was one of the many reasons this was her favorite time of year. "And five years, huh. All that time as a deputy? What has that been like?" Mads knew that she would eventually know exactly what that is like, but she was curious what he thought about it all.
"Yeah I like being a deputy," Jared chuckled. "Wouldn't want Barrett's job, that man is constantly stressing. How about you? You got big plans? Gonna move up through the ranks?" So maybe he didn't really want to get into the details of why he'd moved there and why he'd stayed. Madison would no doubt hear all about Sadie one way or another but it could wait and Jared hoped it wasn't newsworthy.
Mads shook her head. "Nah, no big plans for me." She took a sip of her coffee, eyes following the wipers before she realized that was an extremely bad idea what with her headache and instead directed her attention to Jared. "I feel the same way you do. I like being a deputy. Get to be more hands on with the community and less paperwork." A chuckle. "If there is one thing I hate about this job it's the paperwork." And she was certain this town produced a hell of a lot of it.
"I don't think I ever met a cop who liked the paperwork," Jared said and sighed. "I keep hoping to meet one, then that person can be the one who does all the paperwork. You know I'd give it all up gladly. Make that noble sacrifice." He glanced over at Madison with a little grin. "What made you decide to become a cop?"
"And I'm sure they would be forever grateful for your sacrifice," she added with a chuckle. "Alas, it will never happen." Mads was pretty sure a paperwork loving cop was as elusive (and fictional) as Big Foot or Loch Ness. "Would be great though." There was a pause, her expression turning thoughtful as she pondered Jared's question.
"There was this one cop back when I was a little kid. I'd wander all around this town - I was, like, 5 or 6 mind you - getting into things and this single officer always seemed to find me. He'd take me down to the station and entertained me until my one of my parents came to get me. He didn't have to do that, I mean he could have just left me with the administrative assistant, but nope. He stayed. Guess that left a big impression on me because I've been wanting to be a cop for forever." Mads looked out the window with a distant look in her eyes. "Didn't see much of him after I moved. Thinking he left." At least that is what she hoped. She honestly couldn't say one way or the other and with the way this town was… “What about you?”
Her answer made Jared honestly laugh though he was sure it had not done so for her parents back at the time. "You were a terror," he told her with amused accusation in his tone, shaking his head at the thought of little Madison getting herself in trouble. "I was kinda born into it. Didn't plan on becoming a cop but my dad was one and I spent a lot of time at the sheriff's office, knew most of the deputies. It was like a big family, we had cookouts and potlucks and such. You could say I just didn't know much else." He gave her a quick glance and smiled. "I like your story better. It's got charm. This guy was here in Point Pleasant?"
A light shade of pink tinted her cheeks. She rubbed the back of her neck with a sheepish grin, feeling a bit embarrassed. ”Heh, yeah. I kept them young though. Kinda. Okay, maybe not, but at least I kept them on their toes. Kept them spry.” Mads listened to his story and nodded, understanding. She had been in a similar situation with her parents. Both worked at the hospital and would occasionally bring her along to company gatherings so she was around medical professionals and administrators quite a bit. If it wasn't for the fact she was determined to be a cop she probably would have gone into the medical field.
“Hey, now, yours has charm,” she insisted, smiling over at him. “Following in your family's footsteps and all. Mine just had a bit more child mischief thrown in so it only seems more charming.” She took a large gulp of her coffee because just sipping was going to make it cold and she hated cold coffee. “Yeah, he was a senior deputy or something like that. Officer Harrison. Bet he's relaxing in Florida and enjoying retirement now.”
"Must have left before I got here," Jared replied with a little nod. There hadn't been a whole lot of turnover in staff during his stay in Point Pleasant and he remembered everyone he'd worked with. "You ever thought about looking him up? You could send him a picture of you in uniform, that'd crack him up." He smiled at the thought of some old man down in Florida getting a letter - snail mail preferably -and having a hearty laugh at the tiniest delinquent having grown up to be a deputy. "If I inspired someone to be a cop I'd wanna know about it."
"Oh yeah. Loooong time before you got here. I think the last time I saw him I was in elementary school? Maybe middle school. My memories a bit fuzzy on that." Mads would sometimes wonder why. The officer had made such a big impact on her so why did she have difficulty remembering when he left? Likely the self-absorbed nature of a pre-teen kept her from thinking too much about it at the time. "That's a good idea. No idea why I never thought about that," she said with a smile. "He'd get such a kick out of it."
Mads looked out the window, watching the scenery travel by. "Seems like a slow day. So was yesterday. I'm surprised." Surprised, but not ungrateful.
Jared nodded and grinned. "Like I said, if you're fixing to get into trouble, it's better to do it on a sunny day." There were likely plenty of people doing questionable things but they'd be doing those behind closed doors somewhere and Jared didn't much care to think about it. Out of sight, out of mind. "You're lucky you didn't start last week. A lot of unpleasant things, wouldn't have been a great way to start the job.
"Barrett told me about some of the things that happened. Missing person, body found at the tunnel, and corpses being snatched. I swear, this town is something else." Mads would be lying if she said she wasn't excited to dive head first into the craziness though. Not so much because she liked all of these things happening, but because she now had a chance to finally do something about it. When she was younger she had wanted to help and investigate when bad shit happened, but was never allowed because of her age. "I can see why you guys needed another set of hands on deck."
"Don't forget the animal attacks," Jared sighed. "I don't know what's going on there but it's not good." He wanted to say it wasn't normal, but at the same time saying that sounded like he believed in all the myths and rumors which he most assuredly did not. He just didn’t have a good explanation for all the weird but that didn’t mean anything. Smarter people than him were stumped, someone would figure it all out eventually. "But yeah, we could use more sets of hands if you ask me, feels like we're always getting called in on our days off."
"And the animal attacks," she amended. Because rabid animals were just what they needed on top of all the other issues. "Days off are for losers." She grinned, bringing her cup to her lips. "I am kinda surprised it took Grady this long to get the okay for another deputy, though. With everything that happens here you would think the city officials would be begging him to hire more."
"It's a small town and we have reserve deputies," Jared replied in a tone that clearly indicated he did not like that excuse. "I guess they hope whatever incident happened last would be the end of it, but there's always another." He didn't know why Point Pleasant wasn't just a quiet little town like it appeared to be but it never really had been. "I figured I'd get bored on the job a lot when I first moved here," he said with a grin. "I was wrong."
"Oh yes, of course.” Mads rolled her eyes, not at all impressed by the excuse either. They should know better by now. Bunch of idiots. A rant was about to spill from her mouth, but Jared's comment about being bored veered her away from those thoughts. She let out a laugh. “Bet that came as quite a shock. Who would’ve thought such a little town like this could be so exciting?”
Jared wasn't sure 'exciting' was the word he'd use for it but he got her meaning and laughed a bit dryly. "Not me, that's for sure," he murmured as dispatched called in suspicious activity at an all too familiar address. Jared sighed and replied, then gave Mads a little grin. "Time for you to meet one of our regulars," he said and had to wonder how the old lady would take to a female deputy showing up. It made him wish there were more women on the force. If that was all they sent over, maybe she would stop calling. "This should be fun," he added sarcastically as he moved to turn the car around, shaking his head at having to deal with Mrs. Spencer again. At least Madison would probably get a good laugh out of it with Ty later.
