Who: Adrian & Mila
Where: Maple Street
When: Sunday 7/1
Status: Complete
Adrian was in a stupidly good mood when he got home, both from hanging out with Kane and getting the news that Mila and the baby were okay. He stopped briefly to talk to Aaron and wash his hands, then headed to Mila's bedroom where she was apparently supposed to be on bed rest. She was going to hate that, he was sure, and now he was even more curious about what exactly had happened this early on in the pregnancy to put her in bed.
He knocked lightly before entering the room, giving Mila a warm smile as he walked in and sat down on the bed next to her. "Hey, you scared the shit out of us," he murmured, reaching for her hand. "How are you feeling?" He wished he could turn on that super sensitive hearing of his to listen to the speedy little heartbeat just to be sure but he supposed he just had to trust the doctors like anyone else.
Mila wasn't a fan of bed rest already, but she was tired so it didn't feel so bad right now. She was texting Roxy when Adrian came into the room so Mila set her phone to the side and gave him a small smile. "I feel okay... confused, but okay. The ER doctor said I'm six months, not five." Mila glanced at the bedroom door, as if she would somehow know if Aaron was listening or not. It was a silly thought, but she still hadn't told him that their daughter wasn't exactly human. "I guess I got pregnant earlier than I thought... it makes no sense, but when I think about her being... you know... different... maybe it did happen. I just don't know. I don't want to tell Aaron, but I know he's worried."
Adrian did not like the sound of that, like they had some Rosemary's Baby situation on their hands. They already knew the baby wasn't human, did that mean it wasn't Aaron's baby? The implications were horrific and he flat out refused to believe that. "Dr. Becker told you everything was on the right track," he reminded her. "I think he's more qualified to discern that, don't you?" Dr. Becker was a specialist, so no matter how good the ER doctor had been, Adrian wanted to trust him more - at least in this case. "When do you see him again? And did you get the ER doctor's name?" He didn't think that he knew the doctor in question, he knew a precious few people at the hospital these days, but if it was some incompetent dickwad, he wanted to know.
Mila chewed on her lower lip, but nodded. Adrian made sense. The doctors she saw would certainly know better. The ER doctor wasn't an OB, was he? Maybe he was mistaken. "Uh, I think his name was Dr. Grant. He said he would send the ultrasound photos to Dr. Becker and my usual OB. I'm sure they'll call. But, maybe that's what the pain was... maybe she's... I don't know... growing... faster than she should be." It sounded silly, sure and Mila grimaced a bit as she said it. "If I did get pregnant in early January... it's possible. Aaron and I started being intimate again right after the New Year. I just don't know." It was frustrating, not having any answers. At the same time, she was just relieved that the baby was healthy and doing okay. "It could be a mistake though, you're right. The pain just came on really fast and it was pretty bad. I don't know what I would've done if that Uber drive hadn't come by."
It was the only time Adrian wanted to know anything about when his sister got intimate with someone and it was always kind of funny to skate that line between TMI and medical. Pregnancy just brought all that private stuff right up to the surface. He knew it wasn't unheard of for a baby to be larger than normal but that was usually tied to obesity or diabetes, neither of them a problem Mila had. The mention of Kane nearly put a smile on his face but he resisted it and quirked a brow at Mila instead. "Yeah, leaving the house without your phone? I should be giving you hell, and I will when you're feeling better." It was an empty threat, of course, but he hated that she'd been so careless - going out to Witcham of all places! "I met him earlier, you know. Your uber driver," he added. "He went back to change your tire, I only just got there in time to do it myself." Local hero Kane Owen, Adrian could just picture that coy little smile he'd give if he knew he was being hailed as a hero.
Mila rolled her eyes. "I just got up from a nap and I was groggy and just not paying attention. It's like, the one time I've ever forgotten my phone." It felt like her entire family knew where she was at all times. She supposed she understood it, but she wanted everyone to stop worrying about her. Still, it had been careless, because Witcham Road always have her a bad vibe and getting stuck out there without a phone could have turned very bad. Her annoyance wasn't really all that serious and she softened a bit when Adrian mentioned the Uber driver going back to change her tire. "As for the driver... he said his name was Kane Owen. I'll have to remember that. That was really nice of him to want to go back and change the tire. He was showing me how to do it when I started having pain. He looked a little familiar, but kind of in that way that everyone does in this town. Did you recognize him at all?"
"I think he was my uber driver after Toby's birthday," Adrian replied and he knew he couldn't say Kane had given him a ride with a straight face. "He said your jack sucks and I should buy you a new one," he added with a smirk. "I looked and he wasn't wrong. So guess what you're getting for Christmas." He grinned, trying to direct his mind away from Kane so he wouldn't suddenly look like a lovesick fool, seemingly out of nowhere. "What were you doing out there anyway?" He knew all too well how annoying it was to have family fretting about his whereabouts and wanting to monitor everything he did so he could sympathize, but at the same time he hated the idea of her leaving town alone. She might not be a kid anymore but she was both pregnant and a survivor of some heavy shit and he couldn't help but think that she had plenty of people who'd happily go places with her.
Mila chuckled. If her tire jack was really that crappy, she should probably get a new one before Christmas, but she got what Adrian was saying. Aaron would probably have a whole new tire changing set in her trunk by the end of the week. "I went to the mall to get some new clothes," she admitted with a sheepish smile. "Somewhere cheaper than Veronica's. It was kind of nice to just get out of town for a couple of hours and shop like a normal person. It just turned into a perfect storm of badness once I was coming back. No phone, nail in the road, flat tire." She shrugged, feeling like she should brush it off as no big deal now that she was home and okay. "I'm okay though. The baby is okay. A couple days in bed and I'll be back at it. All that good stuff."
"Aaron and I are gonna end up putting a GPS chip in your car if you're not careful," Adrian said in a mix of endearment and a threat. He didn't want to think about how wrong this could have gone, there were so many possible threats out there and people like them knew about more than most. Even without the supernatural, she could have started having this pain all alone out on Witcham with no one around to help her and that thought was terrifying. "I know it sucks to have people hovering over you but please don't go that far away alone again. Bring me or Roxy if Aaron's busy. Anyone. I'll let you roam around by yourself and wait in the car if you want to, just keep someone nearby, okay?"
Mila rolled her eyes but chuckled softly. "It was just bad luck," she said. A flat tire could happen to anyone. But she understood where Adrian was coming from. Mila worried about him all the time. Resting her hands on her stomach, Mila raised a brow at his request, her lips quirking in a faint smile. "Are you going to do the same? Bring someone with you wherever you go?" She knew he came and went all the time and most of the time, Mila had no idea where he was, or with who. Obviously she worried that he might not come back, but given his past - and hers - she supposed it was natural to want to hover.
"No," Adrian replied with a smile, rolling his eyes a little at the question. "But I'm not pregnant." He leaned in closer to her and gently nudged her stomach. "And I don't mean every and anywhere you go, just... if you leave town again." They knew plenty of people in town, during the day there was always someone who could help, but a Sunday night out on Witcham Road sounded like bad news for anyone traveling alone, especially without the safety net of a phone. "You scared the shit out of me," he added in a murmur, catching her hand again. "Let's not make that our thing, okay?"
She had a feeling he would use the pregnancy thing to dismiss her worries about him, but he also had a point. "I'll take someone with me if I want to leave town again," she promised, squeezing her hand. "I didn't mean to make anyone worry. I'll glue my phone to my side from now on." Mila was well aware of how bad things could have gone. But she was okay now and she had learned her lesson. "If I promise to do what you're asking, then you promise me to let me know when you'll be gone all night, or anything like that? Just so I don't keep worrying."
His stomach dropped a bit at that. Had she noticed that he'd been out all night and not just left at the dead of morning? He almost wanted to tell her he was seeing someone, just so she wouldn't worry so much, but the words got stuck in his throat, that familiar terror rising in his chest as he imagined the disappointed or disgusted look on her face. "I promise," he replied gently. "Not that I have a lot of places to go in the middle of the night." He huffed a little laugh and thought of Kane's place and how much he wanted to sleep there now. "Do you need anything? Can I get you anything?" It was easier to turn it around on her and he had a feeling he wasn't going to go out tonight because the temptation to stay late would be too much and Mila had just made him promise to communicate with her. Maybe if he went out early. He could spend some hours out if it was still daylight - even if Point Pleasant didn't really ask what time it was when it decided to fling horrors their way.
Mila shook her head. "I'm really okay. Aaron's checking on me like, every ten minutes. I've got water, tylenol, cookies..." She motioned to the nightstand and smiled. "I swear if he hears me even move in this bed he's in here, so I'll be okay." Mila straightened and leaned over to hug her brother. When she pulled back, she winced a little. "Um, don't tell mom or dad, okay? About me going to the hospital. I don't think you would, but I don't want them to know, otherwise mom's going to be here hovering every second of the day."
"Yeah we don't need that," Adrian said and he could only imagine what that would be like for both of them. His mother would notice he wasn't wearing his jacket and that his sneakers weren't out in the hallway, she'd probably notice there was something different about him yet again, she'd sniff out the sin in his brain and fret and fret about him even if she was almost solely focused on Mila. Mothers just... knew. He just hoped that when Mila's maternal superpowers got activated they'd be directed at her baby alone. "Let's just hope none of her church friends saw you at Mercy. That woman's got spies everywhere."
Mila loved her mother, God knew she did, but she didn't think she could take months of Maria Moretti's smothering. Knowing her the way Mila did, she had no doubt Maria would try to move in to help, despite the fact that Adrian and Roxy were still living in the house. Mila grimaced at the thought of someone at Mercy seeing her and telling her parents. "I didn't see anyone familiar," she said. "And I was only there for a few hours. I think... I hope that if mom knew, she'd have called by now." Mila sighed and rested back against the pillows again. "I may try to sleep," she said. "Are you going to hang around for a while? No plans?"
Adrian had wanted to go out but by now he couldn't imagine doing that. He still felt a bit on edge, even if Mila looked just fine, and he couldn't keep from imagining her getting worse while he was out somewhere having fun, oblivious. "No plans," he told her. "So if you wanna hang out later you just send Aaron to get me." He wasn't going to sit there and watch her sleep, even if it was a little tempting, but being close by in case of an emergency felt only right. "I think if mom knew, she'd be here by now," he added with a little grin, unwittingly echoing Mila's thoughts. "Already fussing up a storm." Mila had her phone now so he was going to refrain from fretting that hard, she could call him if something came up and she didn't have the energy to yell. "Do you want me to ask Aaron to come up here?"
Mila smiled, because hanging out with Adrian sounded like fun. They lived together for the moment but they didn't always spend a ton of time together. Mila had a full time job and Adrian was getting his own life put back together. "Maybe we can watch a movie later," she suggested. "Get some popcorn and stuff like that." Something funny and light because Mila was in no mood for dark and depressing. "But no, you don't have to ask Aaron to come up. It's been a stressful day for him too. Maybe you two can have a beer, make sure he's doing okay." He would never tell Mila if he wasn't, because he wouldn't want to worry her.
"Yeah I'll go check on him while you get some sleep," Adrian promised and gave her hand a little squeeze. "I'll let you pick the movie despite your shit taste," he added teasingly because Mila might be all grown up and expecting a baby herself but she was still his baby sister and teasing her was more likely to put her at ease than fretting. In all honesty he wasn't picky about what to watch. Popcorn and some family time sounded nice, he just kind of hoped Roxy wouldn't join them. For some reason he felt awkward with her in the house and he just wanted to relax and have a nice time with his family. "You text me if you change your mind and need anything, aight?" he added because he could too easily picture Mila getting up to get things for herself when she really didn't need to.
Mila stuck her tongue out at him when he disparaged her movie taste. She knew he was kidding, probably, but now she planned on picking some kind of sugary sweet rom-com to torture him with. "I promise I'll text you if I need anything. I'll text, call and blow a bullhorn." She waved him off and sunk further down into her blankets to get more comfortable. "Keep Aaron downstairs, because I know he'll come up here every five minutes to check on me." It was sweet and she loved him more than anything but she knew he was fretting and she really wanted him to relax himself. They all needed it.
"I'll do what I can," Adrian replied with a little grin. "But I'm not wrestling him if it comes to that." It was adorable how much Aaron loved Mila, Adrian had often wondered if he'd end up hating his sister's future husband in some stereotypical 'overly protective big brother' way but Aaron was already like a brother to him. Of course nothing had been exactly stereotypical in the last few months and they'd bonded over some terrible things. "I'll tell him you need to sleep, he'll respect that," he added as he got up. "So get a good snooze in and don't worry about us." He couldn't help but lean over and kiss the top of her head before he left, then moseyed on out of there to go find Aaron.
