Amelia and Shan
Amelia had only just found out about her uncle's wedding about an hour before the cookout and she was still processing. She'd never been close to Roxy as such, but she'd been such a fixture in her life as a child and she'd been engaged to Caden, for fuck's sake. Suddenly there was a new person and she couldn't help but feel a little mad about being left out of the loop. It had only been for a couple of days apparently, the marriage was a shock to everyone, but Gavin could have told Amelia as soon as he heard about it and not waited until right before she got to meet the new woman in Caden's life. He hadn't even told her what her name was because he couldn't remember and Amelia was so done with her father at the moment, exasperated and annoyed.
She sought shelter with Jasper and Logan for a good portion of the evening as she tried to suss out just how exactly she was supposed to treat this new lady. Was she supposed to be a bitch to her out of some loyalty to Roxy? Did she even have that kind of loyalty to Roxy? Mila was talking to her at some point and there didn't seem to be any drama, but it was all so confusing and she felt especially ill equipped for dealing with this sort of stuff, clueless about so many social things despite her desperate attempts at catching up.
Of course it eventually happened. She was walking somewhere alone and Caden's new wife was suddenly right there in front of her so not saying hi would be a Statement. "Hi," she said, the bare minimum and it came out a little startled and abrupt. "I don't even know your name..."
Shan was kind of tipsy now, having helped herself to the beer cooler. It was up to Caden to get them back home, so she wasn’t worried, and this kind of family shit was a lot easier to stomach if she wasn’t sober. She was still kind of jealous of the super stoned nephew and idly pondering asking him if he would share, when someone else spoke to her. Shan blinked and focused on the young woman, smiling automatically. It was Gavin’s daughter, but Shan had forgotten her name too. There were too many people here for her to get them all straight immediately, especially floaty-headed like she was now. “Hi,” she replied, not at all offended by the implied question. “It’s Shan. I’m Shan -- Shannon, but Shan’s better. And you’re ...? Amy? Amber? Something like that, right?” She squinted one eye in thought.
Amelia furrowed her brows in a moment of confusion before shaking her head. "Lyra," she told her with a slight inner panic that someone had already told Shan everything about her and she was getting the stories all mixed up. Shan wasn't family, she found it hard to believe anyone had told her the truth already. Or maybe Caden was just that crazy. She decided against telling her she was the out of town niece, just in case. That way it could just be a nickname, no lies intended. "Welcome to the family, I guess... Are you sticking around?" Where the hell was Jasper, he'd make for a good excuse to wander off immediately but maybe talking to this woman was a good idea, if only briefly.
Lyra? Shan was pretty sure that was a name she hadn’t heard before, but maybe it was a nickname or something. She was also slightly drunk and her memory for names wasn’t the best on a good day, so whatever. If this girl was Lyra, she was Lyra. She couldn’t help but laugh at the lackluster welcome and the question. “Ohmygod, your dad asked me the exact same thing,” Shan said, highly amused. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, she guessed. At least the stoned nephew hadn’t asked her the same question, she would’ve started getting weirded out if they all echoed each other. “And I mean, I don’t fuckin’ know, I don’t have a crystal ball. Maybe it’ll work out and maybe it won’t, but I’m here now, isn’t that enough?” She sounded a bit exasperated, because she was. Shan didn’t know how to answer that question and if they were really asking something else, she wished they would speak plainly. All this cryptic politeness was weird.
