Re: Kane & Bailey
Bailey ordered a whiskey sour and immediately took a sip once it was in her hand. Turning away from the bar, she stood beside Kane and sighed as her gaze scanned the crowd. The set up was nice, the music wasn't intrusive. But damn, she already wanted to leave. Bailey spotted some of the Overlook people, who were generally the ones who donated the most money. It surprised her how many people she actually recognized. Mostly from patrolling the town. "You didn't bring any pot, did you?" she asked Kane before taking another drink. It felt like a high school dance, where she could sneak away into one of the bathrooms and get high. Granted, Bailey had never actually gone to a high school dance, but she imagined that's what she would have done if she had.
Kane barked a short laugh. “Sounds like something a cop would ask me, in a room full of other cops,” he murmured with a little smirk. “You should’ve asked before I left the house.” He had plenty of pot and some pills and he could probably procure anything else Bailey might want, but he hadn’t brought anything that evening, figuring the free booze would be enough. Kane kind of wished he had slipped a couple of joints in his pocket now though. Things like this were always more tolerable when reality was blurred a bit. He took another swallow from his glass, gazing at the crowd around them. “So how’s this go again? You guys gonna put on a little song and dance routine for money? Or is it just schmoozing and shaking hands?”
"There aren't that many cops," Bailey muttered before she took another drink. "No skits tonight. I'm sure Grady will probably make a speech or whatever, but it's mostly schmoozing and getting the rich people drunk enough to write big checks. You should network a little," she added, shooting Kane a grin. "Get to know some people. You never know when certain connections could come in handy." Bailey spotted Grady across the room with a woman she didn't recognize. He spotted her too because he gave her a smile and waved her over. Bailey groaned softly through her returned smile. "I have to go say hello to the boss. I assume you'll be fine on your own." She would have invited him to come with her but she doubted Kane really wanted to meet Grady and stand around making small talk for however long.
Kane followed Bailey’s gaze to the boss and quickly took his measure of the man. He knew his name was Grady Barrett and he’d been sheriff for a while but not forever like one would expect in a town this size. Bailey had never bitched about him being unfair or anything, so Kane didn’t hate him already, but he and police didn’t tend to get along, so it was good to know his face for future reference. He snorted a bit at his sister’s suggestion and nodded. “I’ll be sure to try and find the richest looking ones and tell them how much I love bacon, subliminal messaging,” he said with a half-grin. “Have fun with the boss.” He turned to move off, deeper into the crowd, his eyes roaming over everyone, looking for subtle signs of the supernatural without even consciously thinking about it.
Rolling her eyes, Bailey wandered off toward Grady. She knew Kane wouldn't cause any trouble on purpose, so there was little trepidation as she left him at the bar. She expected him to end up outside with a cigarette soon enough anyway.
