Re: Kane & Bailey
“It doesn’t,” Kane confirmed, glancing over as Bailey started rooting around in her purse. Talking to people in the line of duty counted just about as much as him talking to his passengers. Kane wasn’t too surprised that Bailey didn’t have a ton of friends. She never really had as a kid, and while he knew adults could be completely different, Bailey still seemed fairly antisocial. Kane was finding they were more alike than he’d anticipated. “Most people aren’t worth having a conversation with,” he added, a sideways way of reassuring her. Kane slowed down to take a turn, then pulled into the country club parking lot. It was already a bit crowded, and he had to stop a couple of times for well-dressed people crossing in front of them. “They’re gonna have food here too, right?” Kane asked.
"Hey, something else we agree on." Honestly, sitting around with Kane and drinking and not saying a word to each other was a hell of a lot more appealing than what they were doing tonight. But duty called and all Bailey could do was hope this wouldn't take too long. "Appetizers. Hors d'oeuvres, or whatever the fuck they're called. We can grab a burger after, if you want. Moxie's is open late during the summer." Already she wanted to light up another cigarette, so she chomped down on her mint instead. "Just behave. Be boring as fuck, please. If you're good, I'll introduce you to some beautiful women that I know for a fact will be here tonight."
If they were good appetizers, Kane thought he could fill up on them enough to have a couple more drinks. He knew he would get a real appetite eventually though, and grabbing a late burger at Moxie’s with Bailey already sounded pretty appealing. He chuckled over her last minute demands. “Boring and well-behaved, think I can manage that for a few minutes,” he murmured with a smirk. Kane found a parking spot and pulled into it. He wasn’t going to comment on the beautiful women part until he got in there and really saw what was on offer. If none of them seemed worth behaving for ... well, he would try not to embarrass his sister. Kane cut the engine and reached for his door to climb out.
Bailey snorted softly before climbing out of the SUV. A few minutes. She could work with that. Deep down Bailey figured he would get bored within ten and disappear outside to smoke or just wait for her to be done herself. Bailey told herself she didn't care what Kane did with himself while they were there but maybe some teeny, tiny part of her wanted him to see what she did for a living, beyond just patrolling the streets and occasionally arresting a drunk and disorderly. The room where the fundraiser was being held was pretty packed already and Bailey was admittedly a bit stunned at how many people actually showed up. Then she figured there wasn't a whole lot to do on a Friday night in Point Pleasant, so it made sense. "Drink?" she asked, glancing at Kane. She definitely needed one before she had to start talking to people.
In spite of his personal cynicism about how close they could be, Kane was interested to see more of Bailey’s job too. He knew this was only an occasional part of it, but he was curious to see her in this completely different environment. The crowd they walked into made him feel both surprised and wary, and Kane found himself already scouting out potential exits. He likely would need a smoke break or five before the night was over. There was nobody he immediately recognized, and Kane counted that as a good thing. He didn’t know if anyone he hung around with in high school would be at one of these fancy things, but who knew how successful his idiot teenage friends had turned out to be. “Drink,” he confirmed to his sister with a wry smile. They both were going to need a few to get through this. Kane started through the loose crowd toward the open bar, and felt marginally better once he had some whiskey on the rocks in his hand.
