Re: Kane & Bailey
"I believe that's what they're called, yes," Bailey said dryly as she glanced down at her feet. "It was heels or boots and my boots were too muddy to wear." That wasn't necessarily true but she knew better than to show up to a work function dressed like a "bum", as her mom used to call Bailey's clothing choices. Snorting softly at the memory, Bailey rolled down the window to let the smoke drift out. "It was smart to do something nice with your hair. Draw attention away from that ugly mug. You want a cigarette?" She had brought her pack with her, figuring she would be taking plenty of smoke breaks tonight.
He just chuckled at the mild insult. Kane’s face might not have been to everybody’s taste, but he could get laid when he wanted to, and that was enough for him. “Good thing you don’t take after me then, lil sister,” he drawled, glancing over at her with a smirk. “Yeah, pull me out one.” Kane dipped his fingers into the console to find his own lighter, then took the smoke from Bailey and sparked it up. “So,” he said, settling back into his seat a bit. “How do you wanna do this? You wanna introduce me around and claim me as kin? Or are we bein’ mysterious or what?” His tone was light, and he was still smiling as he cracked his own window.
She hadn't really thought much about how she would introduce Kane. In Bailey's head they would arrive and do their own thing. But Bailey knew more people in town than he did so it was probably better to introduce him around first. Though Kane struck her as antisocial as she was so maybe they would end up in a corner somewhere drinking and judging everyone else. "It's hard for me to be mysterious as a police officer in a small town," Bailey mused. "So I guess I'm stuck introducing you as my brother. But you can be as mysterious as you want though. Create a crazy backstory for yourself or something."
Kane didn’t expect Bailey to escort him around to meet all the movers and shakers in Point Pleasant, but he assumed her boss would be talking to her at some point, and there were other cops who would surely say hello ... He had to admit he was curious about Bailey’s life, there was so little of it he ever got to see. Did her colleagues like her? Was she just as prickly at work as she was with him, or was he just special like that? It was probably a good idea for him to scope out the police force here anyway. It was only a matter of time before he ran into one of them around town at night. Kane laughed a bit. “I already got a crazy backstory, but I guess it’s smarter to have a fake one ready,” he said, flicking a bit of ash out the window. “I promise I won’t tell any embarrassing childhood stories about you, fake or not. Even if they ask.”
"Let's steer clear of the reaping backstory," Bailey said with an amused huff. "So yeah, a fake one will be best. Something incredibly boring would be even better, so people don't want to ask you questions." A faint smile curved around her cigarette. "I'm pretty sure you'd have to make up embarrassing childhood stories about me because I never did anything remotely embarrassing as a kid. Although I'm confident I could come up with some really humiliating stories about you. We should see who ends up being the biggest social pariah by the end of the night." Bailey blew the smoke out the window, only mostly joking. It wasn't like she and Kane had been close as kids and sometimes her memories of him felt sort of vague and hazy.
