Kane & Bailey
As Kane pulled his SUV up in front of Bailey’s apartment building, he bent his head a little to sniff at his shirt. It was new, black and button-down. He hadn’t washed it yet, and now he wished that he had. That starchy shit was mixing weirdly with his cologne. It had been so long since he’d worn either one, cologne or a nice shirt, he felt like he had a costume on. He’d thought about backing out of this night a few times over the course of the day, but he had promised Bailey he would go with her to the thing, and she couldn’t get out of the thing, and Kane was trying to keep his promises to her these days. He’d also promised to be the DD so she could drink as much as she wanted. Kane couldn’t blame her, since this thing sounded like a torturous mix of a work function and begging rich people for money. He just hoped the people watching would be mildly entertaining.
Kane picked up his phone and sent his sister a text to tell her he was there. He pulled the visor down and flipped the mirror open to check his hair one more time. It had been a long time since he’d put gel in it. Hell, maybe he and Bailey could wing man for each other tonight and find a couple of fun people to each take home for the night.
There were a few things Bailey had always hated about her job. The fundraisers. The charities. The community outreach, etc. She had been able to get out of attending those particular functions back when she worked in a much larger city with a bigger squad, but in Point Pleasant, her not being there would stick out like a sore thumb to Grady. And since the sheriff had politely emphasized how important it was for everyone at the station to attend, Bailey knew better than to ditch out. Besides, it was an open bar and that would keep her pleasantly entertained for most of the night. Dragging Kane along was more about torturing him than anything else and she had been a little surprised when he agreed to go. They didn't usually include each other in their personal lives, but that had sort of changed after they both had to run for their lives from some insanely strange and creepy forest monster.
After getting his text that he was waiting outside, Bailey sighed and grabbed her shoes to slip on her feet. She hated heels. Hated them with a fiery passion of a thousand and one suns. But she had one pair she wore to these things and given how infrequently she had to use them, they were still in pretty good shape. Bailey knew most of the women would be wearing cocktail dresses and styling their hair all fancy, but she settled for dress slacks and a sleeveless top. It was as fancy as Bailey got.
After stepping outside and locking up her door, she quickly lit a cigarette and headed for Kane's SUV. Once she climbed in, she looked over at him, a slow smile spreading across her lips. "Holy shit. I don't think I've seen you use hair product since high school." Of course, they didn't see each other much after that, but that wasn't the point.
Kane heard Bailey’s shoes clacking on the pavement before she even opened the door, and he was already grinning as she climbed inside. “Are those heels?” he asked, exaggerating the impressed surprise in his tone. “Hoo boy, this is really gonna be a party.” Kane laughed and put the car into gear as soon as Bailey had shut her door. “For real though, I think it’s been almost two years since I fixed my hair. I forgot how good looking I am.” Had he ever even seen his sister wear high heels? Kane couldn’t remember. He did notice that she’d opted for pants instead of a dress, but she looked nice anyway.
