Mara could hear the ocean from the back deck of their new house. She couldn’t see it, not through the thick trees that outlined the backyard, but she could definitely hear it. It was soothing in a strange way, to know that she could just walk through those trees and find enough water to drown herself in. But no, that was wrong. She could try to drown herself but Mara wasn’t sure it would take. She didn’t know anything anymore.
All she knew was that Chase was inside, unpacking their things in a house that was way too nice and beyond anything they could afford on their own. His uncle, Alan Kelly, had helped Chase get the place, otherwise she had a feeling they would be in some shitty apartment with thin walls and crappy locks. Considering their circumstances, they needed privacy… so, rich uncle to the rescue. Mara would meet the man eventually. Hopefully she would remember to thank him.
Her feet had been bare since they crossed over into New York and Mara wiggled her toes on the wood deck before she turned to walk back inside. Wandering through the house until she found Chase, Mara folded her arms beneath her breasts and leaned against the nearest wall.
“This town is strange,” she told him simply. “You can feel it, right?”
Chase looked up from the box he was unpacking and raised a brow, a little smile tugging at his lips. “Then we should fit right in,” he said, purposefully making light of their situation. It felt like the right call at that moment, though they both knew it was heavy enough to force them across the country. He’d only been to Point Pleasant a handful of times, but it never seemed all that strange to him, other than the weirdness that seemed to accompany all small towns. It had a history though, one that held more truth than most people realized. Even though the town was small, Chase knew they could disappear there easier than they could in a city.
“I know it’s not ideal,” he said as he rose to his feet. “But in a lot of ways, it’s better than what we had back home. So, maybe we can look at this as a fresh start?” Chase wasn’t usually much of an optimist, but there were perks to this arrangement. The house, for one. They’d never have been able to afford something like it back home. Just because Chase came from money and had expensive taste, didn’t mean that he was loaded himself. He did alright, but this was where he belonged. He knew he owed Uncle Alan big time, but he’d find some way to make it up to him.
"I thought crawling out of the dirt was my fresh start," Mara quipped, her lips twtiching into a smile. Undead jokes would never grow stale. Not like she almost had. Ha ha. It was probably morbid of her to joke around about something that had been traumatic for the both of them, but what else was she going to do? Pushing away from the wall she was leaning against, Mara walked over to where Chase was unpacking. "I didn't say the town wasn't ideal... maybe it is. It's just... something hovering over the place... like a big, dark cloud of shittiness. But that might be okay for us. We can blend into the shadows with every other creepy thing this place is hiding."
Chase gave Mara a look, one that was supposed to say that wasn’t something to joke about, but what else could they do at this point? She’d had a gruesome rebirth, one neither of them would ever forget, and they could call it a new beginning all they wanted, but they both knew it was an escape. Just because their destination was nicer than what they’d left behind didn’t change that they were running away. Chase stepped up to her, his hands finding her waist as he looked into her eyes, so filled with life, and wondered if they could see more now that she’d changed. If she could literally sense more because of what she was… “Things happen in this town,” he told her. “Things people can’t explain. And they just… write it off. Find some excuse and move on like nothing ever happened. We need this place.” At least for now. Maybe after a few months they’d have a better handle on her condition and they’d be able to move on. Chase wasn’t sure. There was so much he didn’t know about what he’d done. “Can you really sense something?” he asked, mildly curious.
Mara had to admit that Point Pleasant sounded like the perfect place for her. If people were so willing to sweep bad stuff under the rug, then that probably meant she and Chase would be safe here. They still had to be careful but at least they were removed from her family and friends. They would ask too many questions and that was always a dangerous thing. With his hands on her waist, Mara brought her arms up to wrap around his shoulders and neck. "A little, yeah. There's just... an energy here," she admitted. "I can feel it beneath my skin. I'm not scared of it, though. I think I'm just curious. To be honest, it feels kind of good." Maybe that was because of what had happened to her, and whatever it was that she had become. Mara's lips twitched. "It helps that this place has a jacuzzi tub big enough for two people."
Chase had to bite back the pang of jealousy that came with Mara admitting she felt something supernatural and reminded himself of what she’d been through to feel that sort of thing. It couldn’t be called a blessing, so maybe it was more of an instinctual ability to hone in on her kind of energy, whatever that was. She looked and felt completely human, but appearances could be deceiving. Maybe this new sight of hers would help keep them safe. “I’ll be curious to see if you get anything from my cousins. If you can pick out who’s not normal around here, that might work to our advantage.” And if she couldn’t, then he’d just ask Reagan. He couldn’t see any reason why she’d hold back that kind of information. “We’re gonna need to break in that tub,” he grinned. “And the shower. We’ve got a whole house to make ours.” It was a far better line of thinking, looking at the perks of this new life, rather than what they’d left behind. In many ways it was an upgrade, so long as he didn’t think about what it had taken to get there.
Mara didn't know what to call it. A sense? A feeling? She wasn't even sure what to call herself anymore. She looked and felt human enough but there was something else, beneath it all. Something strange and dark. Darker than she had so far admitted to Chase. But right now, she wanted to enjoy the fact that they had a new place that was so much nicer than her last apartment. That darkness was locked away for the moment and Chase's arms were around her, so Mara was willing to enjoy the new beginning as long as she could. At least until sacrifices had to be made. Literally. "Well, I'm excited to meet your family," Mara murmured, her hands running down to smooth over his ass. "And I'm excited to break in the tub, and the shower, and the various pieces of furniture in this place. I really want to look around too... walk to the beach or something. It was a long drive, so I think we deserve a break from unpacking and all that boring stuff."
“They’re a tad eccentric,” Chase said. “They both run their own businesses. Nate’s got a bar, I think. And Reagan a... a bath shop? I’m not totally sure. She got married last year, ran off with her long term boyfriend and eloped. Otherwise we’d have come to the wedding.” Though he was speaking of his family, his attention was divided when her hands were on him. It made him want to rip off her clothes and break in the living room, or the kitchen counter. There were so many new places to fuck that weren’t the bedroom, including the beach, though maybe they should wait until after dark if they were going to fool around outside. This was a more upscale community than they’d lived in previously and getting caught wouldn’t exactly win them any points with their neighbors. “Let’s go walk,” he suggested, his hands sliding up under her shirt to rest on the small of her back. “I want to get a feel for the area around us and we can unpack anytime.”
Eccentric. Mara liked that word. And she was eager to meet Chase's family, just to see the kind of blood he shared with them. Leaning in, Mara pressed her face to his chest, breathing in his scent. It was tempting to drop to her knees and unzip his jeans but nature seemed to be calling to her and she was eager to get her feet in the grass and dirt. "I can hear the beach from the back patio," she murmured, lifting her face to peer up at him. "Through the trees. We should walk back there and see how far it is." It wasn't dark yet so she doubted there was anything to be afraid of. Shadows only came out when they had places to hide.
Chase held Mara to him as she leaned against his chest, basking in the feel of her warm body pressed against him, so very much alive. He wasn’t the best with words, certainly wouldn’t be spouting romantic poetry in her direction, but his devotion to her knew no bounds. They might fight from time to time, but he’d go to hell and back for her. If she wanted a walk on the beach, then so be it. “Can’t be too far if you can hear the water,” he said, his hand slipping down into hers before he began to pull them both towards the door. “It’ll be nice to sleep to. We’ll never get out of bed.” A lie, but it was nice to pretend. At least they’d be home together for the next few days, before he had to start working. They’d gotten a deal on the house, but he needed money to pay the bills if he wanted to keep the lights on.
It would be nice to just wrap herself around Chase with the windows open and listen to the ocean outside. But like Chase, she knew that wasn't a real possibility. He would get a job and be gone... maybe she would too. But right now, they had time to enjoy their new surroundings before life pushed its way in again. Curling her fingers through his, Mara followed Chase outside, towards the trees that hid the ocean from view. The grass was cool under her bare feet, but it felt good. She shuddered to think about how she might have to put on shoes if she wanted to go anywhere worthwhile. Sometimes she just wanted to lounge around naked and she would probably go without clothes if she could get away with it. But she owed it to Chase not to get arrested for indecent exposure here. Maybe if the beach was private enough, she could enjoy it there. "What are your cousins like?" she asked as they walked together. "Do you all get along?"
If the beach was private enough, Chase suspected they’d be spending a lot of time there. This house had been perfect for a number of reasons, but the privacy it afforded them was at the top of the list. It was the last on the block, with neighbors only to the west, the other side covered by woods that stretched into darkness. While he was sure there was something on the other side, it was far enough out that he couldn’t see it, which was what mattered most. It reminded him a bit of the house at the end of the street, the prime house in horror movies for a monster to live. They were the monsters. “Nate used to be this bad-boy wanna be. He looks the part, except his parents had money, so it always seemed like a form of rebellion to me. Like, if his mom wanted him in a suit and tie, he’d show up in a leather jacket with a fresh tattoo. But he’s cool. And I kind of get the impression he cooled down a little.” Chase imagined that anyone who ran their own business had at least some brains, otherwise they’d be drowning in debt. That didn’t seem to be the case for either of his cousins. “Reagan’s a bit of a snob, exactly what you’d expect a little rich girl to grow up to be, but I like her,” he grinned. “They’re both witches.”
It was hard for Mara to imagine growing up with money let alone growing up with money and magic. It almost felt unfair but Mara understood that no one could help what they were born into. "I can't wait to meet both of them," she said, and she actually meant it. Whether or not she would like either of them remained to be seen. Nate seemed more her type than Reagan did, but that didn't really mean anything. Besides, Mara knew she had to play nice if they were going to stay here comfortably. She didn't want to do anything to drive a wedge between Chase and his family so she knew she needed to try and keep certain things under wraps. "Do you think they would help us? If we needed it?"
“Yeah,” Chase nodded. “They might not be happy about it, but they wouldn’t turn us away. I think they’ve delt with worse things than we have, which really says something. And they have more resources at their fingertips than I do.” It wasn’t something Chase liked to admit to, but he wasn’t a witch and that wasn’t going to change. It was something his own father had come to accept and had forged his own path, knowing what he did about the other forces in the world, and it had come to benefit Chase as well. But a human dabbling in the dark arts was never going to match up to someone with innate magical abilities. If they were in a bind, he knew his cousins would help them. Chase just hoped they didn’t find themselves in that kind of situation, period. Asking for help felt like a last straw to him, one that said he’d been unable to handle the problem himself.
Mara wondered what could be worse than bringing someone back from the dead. Would they look at her as some kind of abomination? Sometimes Mara felt like one but she still looked healthy and alive. Whether she felt that way all of the time was a different matter. "I think we've got it covered," she murmured. "But I guess it never hurts to have some witches in your back pocket if it all goes to shit." The trees seemed to block out any remaining daylight that there was and Mara was starting to feel a bit restless. The ground felt good beneath her bare feet and she could still hear the ocean, getting closer. Pulling her hand from Chase's, Mara stripped her shirt off, dropping it to the ground before she grinned up at Chase, turning to walk backward as she worked on getting her shorts off. "You're overdressed," she told him.
Chase doubted Reagan or Nate had dabbled in necromancy specifically, but from what he heard about Point Pleasant, he suspected the sum of their issues greatly out-weighed their one horrible incident. Going forward would be a different matter entirely. Chase had rushed headlong into resurrecting Mara and was well aware that he hadn’t read the fine print, so to speak. There were a lot of details that would have to be worked out, but so long as she was alive, he thought he could handle them. He hoped he would only have to call upon his cousins as a last resort. Those thoughts were left behind the second Mara pulled her shirt off and his eyes raked over her lecherously before he followed suit, dropping his shirt to the forest floor. “Not for long,” he told her, stalking after her as he unfastened his pants.
A smile spread across Mara's face when Chase ditched his shirt. His body was something else and she had to resist lunging at him with the desire to start touching and kissing him all over. She was hoping the beach they were approaching was empty, but if not, she might have to just shove him up against a tree and have her way with him. Mara kept walking, pausing just long enough to drop her shorts to the forest floor. She didn't bother much with wearing bras and underwear anymore. They felt too restricting for her, like clothes did. At least she could get away with not putting anything on beneath her clothes. Mara watched him, her gaze drifting down his body as she continued on, a little faster now, eager to find out what was awaiting them on the other side of the trees.
Chase knew that Mara had changed and, while some of those changes might be problematic, he fully backed her decision to no longer wear undergarments. It might get them into trouble, especially as summer set in and she opted for thigh high little sundresses, but he also looked forward to taking advantage of it. His arousal came on strong once she dropped her shorts and the only thing that kept him a few steps behind her was that his clothes were harder to shed than her own. He saved his boxer briefs for last, wanting them close for their return trip, but he let them fall to the ground as soon as he saw the tree line. He wanted his hands on her skin, wanted to press against her and into her until she cried out in pleasure. The sand would be softer, but if he caught her before she got there, the cold ground of the forest floor would do just fine.
Mara's smile widened when Chase finally got rid of his boxer briefs. He was already hard for her, but that wasn't a surprise. They had never had any trouble turning each other on. The ocean water would probably be incredibly cold, even at this time of year, but it wouldn't bother Mara any. She considered running into it, just to see if Chase would follow. But instead she stopped, a branch breaking beneath her foot. Yes, the sand would definitely be softer, but maybe she didn't want comfort. She had been buried in the ground, had clawed and climbed her way out. The forest floor felt more right to her than any sand, or bed, could. Mara reached for him, wrapping both arms around his neck to pull him down so she could kiss him.
It surprised Chase that Mara didn’t continue on, but he didn’t question it. The forest provided them more cover, so it made sense that they should take advantage of it. He kissed her deeply as her arms wrapped around his neck, his hands finding her hips and pulling them against his own. The touch of her warm skin against his cock made him groan and rock his hips, wanting more already. “You’re so fucking gorgeous,” he murmured against her lips, then moved his hands down under her ass so he could pick her up and lower her to the ground. It was exhilarating to be doing this out in the open, where anyone could stumble upon them, even if it was unlikely. And it felt symbolic, like they were claiming the forest as theirs for their own nefarious purposes. This was their bit of land now and no one could tell them what they could and couldn’t do on it, fuck or anything else.
Mara kept her arms around him, kissing him deep even as he moved them to the ground. The forest floor was hard and slightly cold against her back, but she wouldn't want it any other way. This was their space now, their home. Someone could see them but Mara didn't care about that either. She had only recently become something of an exhibitionist, which she figured had stemmed from what had happened to her. Mara was still working through all of the changes but some were easier to accept than others. Sliding her hands over his broad shoulders, Mara drew her knees up, pressing them into the sides of his body. Moaning deep into the kiss, Mara pulled away to draw in a breath, though her teeth nipped playfully at his lip. "Fuck me," she demanded quietly.
Her words sent a shiver of desire through Chase, his cock hard and ready despite the lack of foreplay. It didn’t take much for him to be ready for Mara, but he’d expected more for her benefit. Maybe she was desperate, or already wet just from the anticipation and heated kisses. Chase didn’t care—he was happy to give her what she asked for. He lined his cock up and pushed into her slowly, groaning as he was enveloped in her tight heat. One hand grabbed her hip as he began to fuck her, slow and deep, while the other made it’s way up her body, squeezing her breast and brushing a thumb over her nipple. Though he knew they should be quiet, that anyone could come upon them, he wanted to hear her out in the open. He wanted anyone around to know that she was his and would always be his. Even death couldn’t separate them.
Mara was desperate and already ready for him. Just being in their new environment was exciting for her, especially considering the strange feeling she got from this place. Even with the trees all around them, it felt like someone, or something, was watching. Mara's hands slid over Chase's abs and then to his hips where she dug her fingertips into his skin. She always felt complete when he was inside of her and she only wished she could pull him in deeper. For someone else, the ground might have been uncomfortable but Mara loved the tiny bits of earth that dug into her bare back and it only served to stimulate the pleasure she was already feeling. Mara moved as best she could with Chase's slow pace. As much as she loved their frantic fucks, this felt right, like they were christening the space together.
Chase might've started out slow, but there was no way he would stay that way. She felt far too good, hot and wet like she'd been planning this from the moment they set foot in the forest. It was kind of kinky, being out there in the open, knowing how easily they could get caught, and the thought that she wanted that risk from the get go made him even harder for her. Chase began to move harder and faster, watching the way she writhed beneath him, her features twisted in pleasure. As much as they sometimes faught, there would never be another girl for him. No one else could stir these feelings inside him, draw out his most carnal urges alongside feelings of love. He kissed her hard as her nails bit into his skin, relishing that little bit of pain, and pushed one of her legs up so he could fuck her deeper, wanting to hit that point inside of her that would bring the cries to her lips. Alone in the forest, they could make all the noise they wanted.
Mara wouldn't have cared if they got caught. She wouldn't have cared if she knew someone was watching them right now. To her, it was a natural need of all people, physical intimacy and pleasure. She had always had a high sex drive, but after coming back it felt like it had kicked into high gear. Thankfully Chase always seemed ready and willing and she loved him even more passionately for that. The sharp change in angle did bring a cry to Mara's lips and she held him tight, moving her body beneath his the best that she could in her position. It was intense, feeling so full as his cock hit just the right spot inside of her. While she was aware that on some level she ought to try and stay quiet as not to attract attention from anyone who may be nearby, Mara found she didn't really care if they did. She needed to let go and just lose herself in this and it was near impossible to stifle the moans that formed in her throat anyway. "Right there," she breathed, clutching his back and straining her body against his for more friction.
Even if it increased their chances of being caught, Chase wanted to hear her. The sounds she made while he was fucking her were a huge turn on, and hearing them out in the open pushed his buttons even further. He panted as he began to thrust faster, unable to keep kissing her at that pace, but that hardly mattered at that point. The friction was perfect, her body hot and tight as he pounded into her, and he knew he couldn’t keep this up long, not without coming himself. But he wouldn’t stop either, not when he could tell how close Mara was. “Come on, babe,” he muttered, watching her face as he filled her, his balls pulling up tight against his cock. He was so close that he bit his lip hard, trying to starve off pleasure for pain, but that only made it worse. She felt incredible, like some kind of earth goddess, and he was going to come whether he was ready or not.
Mara only got louder as she crested, her short nails digging into his back, urging him on. It felt right to be doing this here, like they were claiming these woods for their own. Every time she came with Chase inside of her, it was like she was transported to another time and place. Everything seemed to explode with pleasure, overwhelming her to the point of some unexplainable pain. It was addictive, even more than it had been before the "accident". Mara came with a loud cry, throbbing rhythmically around his cock. She knew he wouldn't be far behind and Mara tightened her legs around his body to keep him close, wanting Chase to claim her again.
As soon as Mara cried out, Chase let go of all attempts to hold back and he came inside her with a groan of his own. Sex with her had always been fantastic, but since she’d come back from the grave it had reached a whole new level. She seemed more prone to give into her desires, and Chase was happy to oblige her, no matter where they were. Feeling her climax around him as he pounded her into the dirt, her nails digging into his skin, felt downright carnal in the best possible way. His body slowed as he emptied himself, then released his hold on her leg as he lowered himself down on top of her to kiss her hard. As breathless as he was, he wanted to claim her lips while he was still inside her, making their union last just a second longer.
Feeling sated and rejuvenated, Mara moaned into Chase's mouth, her hands smoothing down his back again as she held him. That was so much better than just fucking in their bed, although she did enjoy that too. But this felt like the perfect way to start their journey here in Point Pleasant. And now she felt alive and full of energy and she didn't want to go back to that house just yet. Maybe soon, but not yet. She felt like she was in her proper element out here, in the woods. "I think this town might work out for us," Mara murmured against his lips. "I feel good about it."
“Good,” he said, pushing up on one hand and using the other to brush a leaf from her hair. “I want it to work. I want you to be happy.” This wasn’t what Chase would have chosen for them, but he had to agree that something about it felt good. Maybe it was this newfound freedom, the opportunity to be a little bit wild in ways that they could have never embraced back home. Chase couldn’t put his finger on it, but that didn’t matter. He was pleased that she was happy with it and with him, especially since the circumstances bringing them there were not ideal.
Mara smiled softly, reaching up to cup his face with both hands. She kissed him again, slower and softer this time. "I want you to be happy too," she murmured before smiling. "Want to go see the beach now?" They didn't have to swim or even linger, but she wanted to see more of their surroundings before they returned to the house. No, the reason they were here wasn't ideal, but it would work. It had to. The consequences of failure were probably too terrible to imagine.
Chase wasn’t worried about his own happiness. That came easily when he was with Mara and she was happy. And if it didn’t, he could make it happen. He was a firm believer that when everything else failed, determination and brute force could get the job done. “Sure,” he smiled into the kiss, then climbed off her. “Let me just find my pants first.” He wasn’t all that worried about someone seeing them, but it would good to have them just in case. Plus, he didn’t want to have to find them later, especially if it started to get dark.
"Boo, pants," Mara said, grinning when Chase moved away from her. She supposed she ought to get her clothes too, but she was less worried about the nudity than Chase was. Though she supposed she could be arrested for that kind of thing here. Cops were probably super bored in this town. Maybe. Getting to her feet, Mara stretched and watched Chase gather up his pants. "We'll make this a weekly thing," Mara said. "A weekly night thing, at least... sex outside? A new tradition for us here in Point Pleasant."
“I didn’t say I’d put them on,” Chase grinned. “Just that I should grab them.” And while he was at it, he picked up hers as well, though he definitely preferred the sight of her walking through the woods completely naked. “It’s something I could get used to,” he agreed with a smile. “At least until it gets cold. Then we might have to get creative. Or stay closer to the house.” He knew sex could get them both all hot and bothered, but he wasn’t sure body heat would be enough when it was below freezing.
Mara shrugged, since the cooler weather didn't seem to bother her anymore. She didn't know if that was from what had happened to her or what. But she didn't put too much thought into it. "We have the whole summer to get through before we have to worry about cold weather," Mara said, stepping forward to rest her hands on his chest as she pushed up on her toes to press a kiss to his lips. "It's much easier to just live in the moment than try to plan ahead. But I am all for getting creative with you."
Chase had never been the best at thinking ahead, so worrying about something that was literally months away just wasn’t going to happen. They’d figure it out when they got there, or maybe they’d be into something new and different and it wouldn’t matter anyways. If they were still in Point Pleasant by winter, then things would be going good, in his opinion. He wrapped an arm around Mara’s waist, pulling her in as she kissed his lips, her breasts pressed against his chest. “I’m not worried,” he said. “Just fantasizing about all the fun we’re going to have, in so many places.”
Mara smiled against his mouth. "So many places.</i>" Nipping at his lip, she pulled back and reached down to take his hand. "Let's go check out the ocean and then we can go home and shower." Together, preferably. She was pretty much done with unpacking tonight. She just wanted to lounge around naked with Chase and deal with the real world another day.
It was going to take them forever to unpack at this rate, but Chase didn't care. Every moment spent with Mara was one he'd almost missed out on and he intended to make the best of them. With his hand in hers, Chase followed her out to the beach, happy to see wherever this road took them, so long as they were together.
