Girls always got to have the most fun with dressing up for fancy events but Greg was not one of the guys who minded that much. He looked fine as fuck in a tux and he'd gone out of his way to get a tie that matched Phee's dress so that was pretty cool all on its own. His mom said it brought out his eyes? But that was such a mom thing to say he didn't even know if it was true or if it was the figment of mom-brain. He liked the way he looked though and he was looking forward to seeing Phee in her dress proper. The only downside to his outfit was that whenever he put up his turquoise mask, paired with the suit it reminded him of Fifty Shades of Gray and that was just super lame. Oh well.
It was pretty amazing that they were going to actually get to enjoy prom. Phee's mom was safe and sound so that particular shadow was no longer hanging over them and Phee looked so much happier these days. Even James was kind of back on his glaring-dad game though Greg liked that a lot less. At least he was less strict now so Greg felt a lot more relaxed picking Phee up than he'd ever thought he would.
They got their pictures taken at home but Greg still made a beeline for the designated photo booth at the dance once they got to the country club. Phee might not be as shallow as his ex was but he figured all girls wanted good photos early on in the evening while their make-up was still fresh and they hadn't started drinking. To be fair, he wanted lots of photos too, being a sentimental nerd or whatever. There was a line as expected but that was okay, there were plenty of people to talk to and his favorite one was right there by his side.
Phee had some mixed feelings as she got ready for Greg to pick her up. She’d argued with Brianna that afternoon over whether or not she should be allowed to spend the night at Greg’s. Phee’s impassioned reminders that she’d been doing it already for months did not have the desired effect. She got the vague impression that she’d gotten her father into trouble, but Phee didn’t give a shit about that. She just wanted permission to sleep down the street with her boyfriend who everyone knew she was already having sex with because she was being responsible and on birth control and everything.
It didn’t work though, and Phee hit a point where she felt guilty for arguing, so she stopped. Maybe setting down rules again made her mom feel better about being back, she didn’t know. In any case, she had tried to make up with Brianna, and just made a secret plan to leave the dance early or something so she and Greg could get some alone time. She tried not to let it taint the start of her evening, because her dress was gorgeous and she looked amazing and so did Greg when he showed up.
The extra tension drained out of Phee by the time they got to the country club. She and Greg could deal with skirting around some rules. She smiled for the camera and posed with her handsome man, planting a kiss on his cheek before they headed away from the photographer. “So Bash is coming with the mayor’s son, did you know they were even a thing?” she asked, aiming Greg toward the refreshments. Phee wanted a drink.
"I literally just found out," Greg exclaimed. "So much for no more secrets." He grinned, joking this time because Sebastian had done a good job of explaining that it wasn't his secret to keep. McCalley wasn't out of the closet - though Greg supposed that was changing tonight and still, Greg felt like he was getting pretty good at keeping secrets with all the damn practice he'd had so maybe there was a tiny bit of sulk underneath the cheer. There was really no room for it tonight though (even if he was also sulky about Phee's reestablished hard core rules) so he brushed it aside easily. "I'm glad he's bringing someone, I was worried he was gonna be a sad sack tonight."
