Re: Ruby & Clint
Clint had technically never worked before, his well-off family more worried about him keeping up his grades and extracurriculars than making any money. They gave him everything he wanted. So he’d been a little surprised when his dad had encouraged him to find somewhere to work this summer between graduation and college. It would be good life experience, he said. That didn’t mean he was going to leave his son to wash dishes or something though. Clint gave Ruby a wry little half-smile. “My dad’s got like, a list of his friends I’m supposed to call and ask about part time positions,” he said. “So I’ll probably be like, fetching coffee for the D’Onofrios or something. I’d rather work outside though, enjoy the weather while I can. Think somebody’d hire me as a pool boy?” He grinned and bounced his eyebrows at her.
Ruby thought Clint would be cute as a grease monkey, especially all dirtied up in coveralls, but she probably knew more about cars than he did and she didn't really want him working for her dad anyways. She couldn't see him waiting tables, but she could totally see him cleaning pool skimmers. "I'd hire you as a pool boy," she leered with a laugh. "You could wear little shorts and bring me drinks with umbrellas and rub sun screen on my back. I don't pay in cash, but I think you'd be satisfied." She didn't even have a pool, but it was a fun little fantasy for the moment. They could spend some time at the beach this summer and maybe make it a reality, at least in part.
He respected people who worked with their hands, especially mechanics. Clint had some friends who were really into cars, and when they talked about all that shit his eyes just glazed over. He was good at some things, but machines didn’t seem to be one of them. He knew he would just make a mess at Mr. Fox’s shop, so it hadn’t even occurred to him to inquire about it. Clint laughed at Ruby’s suggestion, very able to envision doing that sort of work. “Oh I know I would,” he said to Ruby with a sly little grin. “And as your dedicated employee, I would make sure you were satisfied too. Probably not the life experience my dad had in mind, but ...” He shrugged and beamed at her.
“But so much more rewarding,” Ruby grinned as she leaned in to kiss him. While she knew he would make an excellent pool boy, that wasn’t a realistic option, at least not with her as the customer. There might be some houses in Overlook that could use his services, and if not, then there was surely a golf course that he could work at. Ruby didn’t care, so long as it didn’t interfere with them being together. She’d succeeded so far in making sure her Friday and Saturday nights were often free and she intended to keep doing so for the rest of the summer. “I’m sure we’ve got plenty of life experience in our future. No need to rush it.”
No matter where he ended up working, Clint was definitely going to make sure he had free time for Ruby. It wasn’t like he was hurting for money, he didn’t have to hustle to make sure he stayed fed and housed, and he wanted to enjoy the last couple of months he had with his girlfriend. Their future was uncertain, but their present sure was fucking nice, and he wanted to keep it going. “I’m enjoying this one right now,” he murmured, nuzzling his nose against hers before he kissed her again, lingering a bit longer this time. Clint felt like he couldn’t have asked for a better date to his one and only senior prom.
“Me too,” Ruby muttered, melting into the kiss. If the chaperones felt the need to interrupt them, so be it, but she was going to enjoy a good time with her man while she had the chance. This was their last school dance, the only one that really mattered, and even if they weren’t together forever, she knew the memories she made tonight would last a lifetime. This was the kind of experience she wanted, a happy fairytale of a night that made her feel warm and happy every time she thought about them. The night had been perfect so far and with Clint by her side it was only going to get better.
