Who: Addie & Silas
Where: Rayner House
When: Tuesday afternoon 01/16
Status: Complete
With the new cadaver in the cooler and Mrs. Livingston ready for departure, Silas finally made his way up to the living quarters of the Rayner house, looking for Adalyn. It'd be weird to him if she wasn't home, she was the biggest home body he knew and that was saying something. He'd come around the back since he had the hearse so he hadn't seen whether her car was at home but the house felt occupied - more so than just the two anomalies above and below at least. He found her in the kitchen, the smell of tea luring him in the last few steps. "Hey," he murmured and set his phone down on the counter before helping himself to the newly boiled water. "Everything ready for the service tomorrow? Anything you need me to do?" It was a little after four so they had enough time but Addie was productive so he wouldn't really be surprised if she was done with it all already.
After Nick left, Addie had managed to get everything finished for the service in the morning. She had done it with a smile on her face too and it had taken everything in her being not to jump on her brother as soon as he appeared in the kitchen. It was probably sad that she didn't have any super close girlfriends to text about it, but Silas was close enough! "Everything is ready," Addie confirmed with a nod. With a bright smile on her face, she turned to Silas and watched him as he made himself tea. "You will never guess who came into the house today. Like, never."
"Ryan Reynolds," Silas guessed jokingly though his sister's excitement level was hard to gauge; she was easily excitable on a good day so it could have been someone super famous - or just someone hot from high school. "Lady Gaga? No, it was a guy, wasn't it... You're probably right, I'll never guess. Why don't you just tell me." He grinned at her, not surprised to hear she was done with everything. It made his job so much easier when he worked with someone like his sister, unlike some of the slow moving slackers he'd had to deal with in Bangor. Not having to rush to finish up at home when he was done with running around town just made life easier.
"Oh, if Ryan Reynolds came in here he would be tied up in the basement right now." Addie laughed. She had always loved Ryan Reynolds. But honestly, after having seen Nick Cooke in the flesh, she would much rather tie him up. Preferably to her bed. "But no, not Ryan, or Gaga. It was a guy though. This magnificent specimen of a guy. You know Nick Cooke, right? The author? He's here writing a book on Point Pleasant. Maybe more than one too. He came in and asked for a freaking tour of this place."
Silas's eyes went a little wider and a small rush of panic went through him. Addie wasn't stupid so he knew she hadn't shown Nick Cooke the whole house but the fact that a paranormal investigator wanted to look at their place was worrying. "That's... amazing," he said, well aware of who his sister's favorite authors were, of course, he knew all about Nick Cooke who apparently had now been in their house. "I'm hoping his interest in us is purely because of our profession?" he murmured. It was interesting and to most people a likely place to actually be haunted though Silas hadn't really seen more in their house than he had around town but that wasn't saying much.
"Well, yeah." Addie picked up her fresh cup of tea, mostly to warm her hands than anything else. "I mean, funeral home in the middle of a potentially creepy town? I would think any investigator would want to check it out. He didn't see the whole house, by the way. Obviously." She had been starstruck and ecstatic, of course, but Addie knew better than to show off her comatose father, or... whatever remained of her brother in the basement. She sipped her tea carefully. "Anyway, his interest in the house was purely professional. He did get my number though and I think maybe we're going to go out for dinner sometime." That was the part that she was most excited about and she had to keep from bouncing on the balls of her feet as not to spill the tea everywhere.
Silas let out a delighted little laugh at that piece of information. It was unexpected for sure and on some level he felt like he should do his brotherly duty and look up more information about the guy before he gave his blessing but Silas had never been that kind of a big brother. Maybe it was the middle child thing, Elijah was supposed to be the overprotective and responsible one, he'd just ditched out early. "I take it back," Silas murmured. "Him coming here was not amazing compared to that. You going on a date with Nick Cooke? That is amazing."
"Well, maybe. I don't know. I hope so." Addie cleared her throat. "I mean, it was flirty. And he kissed my hand before he left. And he was in my room." She whispered that bit, still smiling. "Just to see my book collection, but still. I kind of just have to wait and see if he'll call. I've had guys ask for my number before and then... nothing." She stuck out her tongue, but didn't seem bothered by it. "So yeah. You need to be here next time he is, because you're going to literally drool all over yourself. Where've you been anyway?"
"Well if he doesn't call you back you can give him a scathing review on Goodreads," Silas murmured though he knew she never would. "I went to pick up our new client and talked to the second on our list of nurses, Toby Mitchell? I ran into him in the hospital. He's not as flexible as Meredith but beggars can't be choosers." He tossed the tea bag in the trash and fetched himself a little honey from the cabinet. "I'll try not to drool too obviously at your author if he comes around, although I'm sure he's not easy to scare off if you didn't manage to already."
Silas was right that Addie would never do that, but the thought of it still amused her. "Of course he's not easy to scare off. Look at the kinds of books he writes." Addie was well aware that her job was only a small part of who she was. She would just have to be mindful of everything else if she saw him again. Men could get freaked out by so many things. "So is this Toby person going to be a good fit? Do you want to interview anyone else?" They probably didn't have a lot of options, but their situation was a delicate one, and they needed to make sure Toby Mitchell would be a good fit.
"Well he was our second choice after Meredith," Silas replied a bit uncertainly. "We don't have a long list of people to pick from but yeah, I think he'll be okay. I've ordered a cam for dad's room, so when nobody's here we can at least keep an eye on him through our phones. Make sure he's not wandering again." He sighed loudly, rolling his eyes skyward at the thought of that particular incident. "I mean, that is really weird, isn't it? God, what a depressing subject, I'd much rather talk about your day. What does your author look like? From the way you talked he's a hottie as well as your favorite author."
Addie frowned briefly, remembering the incident that scared Meredith away. Yes, it was weird. Beyond weird. But he hadn't moved since, so... maybe it was just a one time incident. She liked the idea of a camera in their dad's room, not only to make sure he stayed put, but to make sure this new nurse was taking care of him. It wasn't that she automatically believed the worst in people, but she had read so many horror stories of caretakers being abusive to the elderly. She wanted to make sure her dad was well taken care of until he woke up. She sipped more of her tea and then smiled, forcing herself out of the low feeling the talk of their dad had triggered. "Well, there are pictures of him on the back of his books, but... those are older. He's super tall and just... muscle, and he has this beard." Addie sighed and then set her mug down to tug her phone out of her pocket. She quickly pulled up a more recent picture of Nick Cooke and offered her phone to Silas. "He was wearing this flannel today and I swear to god, he was like a sexy lumberjack. I was picturing a fire and a bear skinned rug and a lot of sweat, you know?"
Silas hadn't read Cooke's books extensively enough to remember his author picture and he supposed he could have looked him up himself but Addie beat him to it. Nick Cooke looked nothing like Silas had imagined but he supposed authors had every right to look like rugged lumberjacks. "No wonder you're all a flutter," he teased Addie as he looked the picture over, cocking a brow. "He's a hottie. Like criminally hot. If you're just hoping to have a little fun then hop-hop to it but otherwise watch it because he looks like a heartbreaker." He handed her the phone back. "How long is he in town for?"
Addie frowned and took her phone back. “I’m not sure. He’s already been here for a couple of months. And he doesn’t look like a heartbreaker. He looks like a... bed breaker.” She stuck her tongue out at Silas as she laid her phone down. “But whatever. I mean... when he falls in love with me he’ll be here indefinitely, right? Who could possibly leave me?” Addie paused and then winced before she smiled. “Don’t answer that. Anyway. I’m sure you’ll meet him eventually. And if you stick around here long enough, you’ll find your own sexy author... or lumberjack. And we can compare notes and penis sizes.” Addie picked up her mug again. “I guess I should go downstairs and check in on our new guest.”
Silas barked out a little laugh at 'bed breaker' and that definitely put some thoughts in his mind he needed to wave off quickly. God, he was going to be lonely staying in Point Pleasant if he let his thoughts go down that road so no, focus focus. "I'm afraid we may have to import our own authors and lumberjacks if this thing of yours doesn't work out. They're sort of in a short supply here in Point Pleasant." And tend to go missing. He didn't say that last bit out loud because they both knew it and there was no need to bring the room down. "But I look forward to meeting him. Not often you get to meet published authors who are also jacked as shit." He waved his hand dismissively. "And don't worry, our new guest is quite comfortable and not complaining. Go treat yourself to some nice down time while we actually have time. I'll go check on dad."
Addie shrugged one shoulder and sipped her tea. None of her previous relationships and crushes had worked out, obviously, but that was okay. It was just nice to have a guy around who seemed to want to take her to dinner. If nothing else, at least she would get a free meal out of it, right? She smiled at Silas and nodded. "I think I might to take a bath for a bit and read. We have a busy day tomorrow so we might as well try to relax today. Do you want to get pizza for dinner tonight? I can order from Dino's if you want."
"Oh, that would be so naughty," Silas murmured, clasping his face dramatically. "I love it, yes. Let's get pizza. I haven't had Dino's in forever." Sure, they had awesome restaurants in Bangor and if Silas felt comfortable with it he'd very much choose to stay there over staying here but Point Pleasant at least did have good places to eat and he absolutely loved Dino's pizza. "I'll order when you're done with your bath," he added and she knew he was particular about what he wanted on his pizza so this need to be in control of that shouldn't surprise her.
She snickered at the thought of getting pizza being naughty. If only Silas could see how Addie had been eating over the past few weeks. He would probably be appalled, really. But it was really nice not having to eat alone anymore, and she nodded when he offered to order after she was finished upstairs. "Sounds good to me." She set her mug in the sink and grabbed Silas to squeeze him around the middle before pulling away to head for the stairs. "Yell for me if you need anything."
"I won't," Silas told her firmly. "You go enjoy yourself and come down when you're ready. Whatever happens, I will handle it." He waved around the kitchen with dramatic flair but honestly he just hoped nothing would happen. A little calm before the storm of them both being stupidly busy was welcome right now. Of course now he was picturing some farce like series of events where everything went wrong and he was flailing around trying to take care of it all to keep his word. Theater brain, he supposed. Thankfully it was more comedy than anxiety so he wasn't fretful about it actually happening. He smirked after Addie, then rinsed his cup and put it aside. He had missed her, he had to admit that, no matter how much he missed Bangor, being home with her kind of made up for some of it.
