Who: Enzo and Sabrina
Where: Moxie’s Diner
When: After school, Tuesday, Dec 12th
Status: Complete
Only eight more days of school and then they were off for Christmas. Eight more days of the hell that was high school and then Enzo was free to do whatever he wanted for two glorious weeks. He kind of hated the holidays, they’d always been a reminder of how fucked up his family was, but he enjoyed not having to report to anyone, even at school. His brother tried his best, but he wasn’t really a father figure. Hell, his own dad hadn’t been much of a father figure, so most days Enzo was left to fend for himself. With no one waiting at the door for him to arrive each day, he tended to doddle around after school, putting off homework as long as possible.
Today he’d convinced Sabrina to hang with him at Moxie’s and he ordered a chocolate milkshake and fries just as soon as he was settled. It would ruin his dinner, but he didn’t really care. He made an attempt at doing his homework while he waited on his friend to arrive, but he didn’t expect to get very far. There were too many other people to watch from the booth and everything was more interesting than homework.
Since Sabrina didn't have to work after school and Mak was at rehearsal, she was more than happy to meet Enzo at Moxie's. They hadn't hung out as much lately as she would have liked, but life and bullshit happened so there hadn't been much she could do about it. But things felt semi-normal lately so she was hoping everything was getting back on track. She walked into Moxie's and found him in a booth with what looked like homework. Only he didn't seem to be paying much attention to it, which wasn't unusual. "Hey," she greeted, grinning as she slid into the booth seat across from him. She plunked her bag down beside her. "Thanks for texting, 'cause if I had to go home and hang out alone again tonight I was probably going to end up doing something stupid. Please tell me we're not here to study."
Enzo shut his textbook just as soon as Sabrina slid into the booth, quickly pushing it out of the way. “Hell no,” he grinned back at her. “Just killing time. Dreading finals. I can’t wait till we never have to take another test ever again.” He wasn’t sure about Sabrina, but Enzo knew that there was no college lurking in his future. He’d graduate, sure, but then it was up to him to figure out what the fuck to do with his life. “What’ve you been up to lately? Where’s your girl tonight?” He didn’t see Sabrina quite as often as he used to, now that she was dating Mak, but he wasn’t going to be the bitch who whined about his friends going missing when they started hooking up with someone. Besides, Mak was cool and she seemed to make Sabrina happy.
Sabrina didn't look overly concerned about finals because she wasn't. She wasn't going to college. Not a real college, anyway, and she was a decent enough student that she could skate by with barely a passing grade and be okay. She just wanted to graduate. Everything after that was up in the air. "Mak's in the play," she explained, pausing briefly when a waitress appeared. Sabrina ordered a Cherry Coke and a plate of fries, her stomach rumbling with appreciation at the smell of the food around her. When the waitress left she shifted her attention back to Enzo. "She's got rehearsals and all that, so most of my afternoons are pretty boring. I've been working and... that's about it. What about you? I feel like I haven't seen you in forever."
“Oh yeah, I forgot she was doing that,” Enzo said. “I was thinking about signing up to work backstage or something. Do lights or sound, you know? But I can’t imagine memorizing all that shit for fun.” It sounded like a lot of work, especially with it being Shakespeare. Memorizing lines he didn’t understand wasn’t his idea of a good time. “Nothing really exciting in my life. I kind of need to get a job, but I don’t know what I want to do. Maybe I’ll chase down that ice cream truck and see if they’re hiring. I could drive around in circles for hours, so long as I don’t have to stop for some kids to buy ice cream.” That seemed to be the truck’s MO, though why anyone would want ice cream this time of year was beyond him.
She nodded, since she had thought about doing some of the background stuff too, but ultimately Sabrina had decided against it. The only reason she would have done it would be to see Mak more, but Mak was on stage and they probably wouldn't have had a lot of time to hang out during the whole thing. "That ice cream truck is weird," Sabrina said with a laugh. "Like, I get playing Christmas songs, but it's December... who is buying ice cream out of a truck in December? Here." She heard it drive by the apartment complex sometimes, even late at night. It made no sense to her but she didn't put a lot of thought into it. "The Boathouse is hiring dishwashers," she said. "I could get you an application, though it's not super exciting. But it's money."
Washing dishes sounded about as lame as he could get, but with no real experience Enzo knew his options would be limited. He couldn’t really afford to be picky. “Yeah, might as well. I don’t want to work there forever, but it might be an okay place to start. Can I use you as a reference?” Maybe that would help. Otherwise it was just him against every other teenager desperate for some cash. Enzo knew he needed to figure out what he wanted to do long term, but he was so focused on just finishing high school that he couldn’t focus on what came next. He always figured he’d figure it out when he got there. If he wasn’t planning on going to college, then why worry about it now? That seemed like the only thing with a major deadline.
"Obviously," Sabrina said. "It would be silly not to use me as a reference if I'm the one getting you an application. And you know, you can look at other places too. I know washing dishes isn't exactly exciting, but neither is being a hostess. I kind of wish I had just gotten a job at the theater, because at least then I'd get free movies." She arched a brow and grinned. "Or you can work at the theater and just let me in for free." Working sucked balls, but it was necessary if she wanted money. And with Christmas coming up, Sabrina definitely needed it.
“Obviously I need to apply everywhere and then pick the one with the best benefits,” Enzo grinned. “Free movies would be at the top of the list. In fact, if I get the job, then you should apply too, then quit your job so we can both hang out and watch movies together.” He realized that wasn’t quite how it worked, that he wouldn’t be watching anything while he was working, but it seemed like it might be more fun than washing dishes. “The arcade might be fun, too, but I’m afraid I’d end up spending all my money on the games and then what’s the point, you know?”
Sabrina gave that a thought, finding she actually quite liked the idea of working with Enzo. She was only at hostess at The Boathouse and she didn't have much to do there. Not to mention she was surrounded by older people. "I think that would be fun, actually," she said, pausing when her drink was set in front of her to thank the waitress. "I'm not very good at the arcade stuff. All that noise would drive me crazy. Ping, ping, ping!" She shook her head. "Nah. But if you get a job at the theater let me know and I'll go apply too. Hopefully they'd pay more than the restaurant because I really need to get a car of my own."
“I can always bus you around until you do,” Enzo offered with a grin as his fries and milkshake were delivered to the table. The only reason he had a car was that he’s inherited his father’s, a Chevy Silverado which he’d quickly exchanged for a used Subaru Crosstrek. It wasn’t as nice as his father’s truck had been, but he’d been on a mission to remove every trace of his father from his life. He had scars for that; he didn’t need a car as well. “You’d probably make more if you were waitressing, but I’d be shit at that level of customer service, I think,” he said, making a face. He could try, but he didn’t want his pay depending on it. “So what else is new? Any good gossip to share?”
"Well, they don't really want underage waitresses because we can't serve alcohol and they think it's a pain in the ass to have someone else doing it when the restaurant gets busy," she explained with a shrug. "Plus, I really don't like having to talk to people and I've seen how some of the people treat the wait staff. I'd get fired for dumping their food in their laps. At least at a movie theater there's less bullshit to deal with. Maybe." She sipped her soda and then shook her head to his question. "Not really. I mean, nothing worth mentioning. I heard Jules Cooper is having a party Saturday night. Big shocker there. Um... Hunter broke up with his boyfriend? I guess that's gossip, right?"
“Yeah, I’d probably get fired for spitting in someone’s food,” Enzo snickered. Neither of them were cut out for customer service, it seemed. It made him wonder a bit what he was going to do with himself once school was over. He could work at the movie theater, or wherever, for a bit, but that wasn’t what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. But neither was college. He supposed he’d have to figure it out eventually. “Jules Cooper is always throwing a party. Bitch must be made of money,” he said, rolling his eyes. “Wait, didn’t they just come out? Not Hunter, but McCarthy? I feel like we just found out they were dating, like, yesterday.”
"Yup." Oh good, her fries were here. Sabrina grabbed the plastic ketchup bottle and squirted a bunch on the side. "I don't know what happened really, but I'm sure Mak does." Honestly, it sucked for Hunter, but Sabrina wasn't exactly friends with Sebastian McCarthy so she didn't care much. "Mak said Hunter's mom is getting a divorce so he's moving back to Portland to help her out. Probably makes sense to break up because long distance shit never works." She eyed Enzo with a grin, dipping a fry into the ketchup before taking a bite. "Sebastian is single now. That'd be a fun hook up, right?"
Enzo snorted in amusement. “Yeah, of course, he’s gorgeous, but he’s not exactly my type.” Not that he was entirely sure what his type was, but he knew it wasn’t Sebastian McCarthy. He was too many of the things Enzo hated about high school— the jocks, the popular crowd, the kids with money. Sebastian checked all the boxes, plus he had this squeaky clean reputation that made him feel fake to Enzo. For some reason it irked him that the guy actually seemed nice. “I don’t wanna be with someone that’s embarrassed of me, you know? Even if it’s just a hookup.”
"Do you need a type? I mean, a blow job is a blow job, right?" Her grin widened to show she was teasing. "But yeah, I guess I get it. I mean, I lost my virginity to a dude who told everyone the day after and then pretended I didn't exist." Sabrina paused, her fry halfway to her mouth. "Holy shit, I'm like one of those cliché plots in a teen movie. Fuck." She popped the fry into her mouth and shrugged. "Anyway, let's go to Cooper's party and see if we can find your type in the crowd of assholes."
“Okay, you’re right, if one of those assholes wants to suck my dick, I’m probably not gonna care,” Enzo snickered. “Sometimes I’m glad I lost my virginity to a girl, otherwise I’d be playing the V-card forever.” It hadn’t been good sex, but it was still sex, and it was a pretty good confirmation that girls really weren’t his thing. But he’d given it a shot before deciding it wasn’t worth it. He’d rather be out and live his life his way then live a lie that made him embarrassed and frustrated and all around uncomfortable. “If there’s free booze, you know I’m in. We dragging Mak with us? Or is she hanging with Hunter till he leaves?”
"Oh, I don't know," Sabrina said after a thoughtful moment. "I'll ask her, obviously. She might want to come, or she may want to hang with Hunter. Jules and Sebastian run in the same crowd so I doubt Jules would want Hunter there, right? I don't fucking know how all that stuff works. It's not really any of my business either. But Mak may want to come so I'll check with her, otherwise you can pick me up," she added with a smile. There was always free alcohol at these parties which was really the only reason to even go, if you asked her. "I'll text her later and ask. What are you doing tonight though?"
“They’re definitely the same crowd. Didn’t they used to date?” Enzo wasn’t sure, but he felt like that was something he’d heard at some point. And if Jules and Sebastian were friends, then he was willing to bet Hunter wouldn’t be welcome at the party. If it was him, he wouldn’t have given a shit and gone anyway, but he thought Hunter probably cared about things like that. Maybe. Totally not his call either way. “Tonight? Nothing, other than hanging with you. I’ve got some exam reviews to do, but they can wait. Why? Got something in mind?” He had a car and almost no supervision. If she wanted to get up to something, he was definitely along for the ride.
"Oh. I don't know, I guess?" Sabrina rarely paid attention to what people like Sebastian and Jules did. "If you want to call it dating. Maybe she was just going out with him so people wouldn't find out he was gay. I don't freaking know." But he had a point. If Jules and Sebastian were still friends, then Hunter probably wouldn't want to show up to her party. Taking a quick sip of her soda, Sabrina glanced outside. She was already wishing for summer again. "I don't have anything specific in mind. We could go back to my place and get high though."
Enzo couldn’t imagine convincing a girl to go out with him just to hide that he was gay, but he knew people did it. He just thought they were usually famous, like movie stars, people who thought their careers might dive if they came out, not kids in the middle of nowhere. But it wasn’t his problem and made him glad his own coming out had been so anticlimactic. “I’m always down to go get high,” he said with a laugh. “Maybe watch a comedy or something. Laugh our heads off.” It sounded like as good a plan as any and way better than hanging out alone.
"That sounds pretty amazing," Sabrina said, picking up another fry to shove in her mouth. "I could use a night to just chill. Did you drive?" She had walked to Moxie's and it would suck to have to walk all the way back to her apartment. Winter was really going to suck for being car-less, but she would get by. Mooching rides off of friends would have to do unless she wanted to call an Uber or ride her bike. Neither option was very appealing.
“Yep, I can drive us,” Enzo said, then took another quick sip of his milkshake. “Want to see if we can take this to go? I’m gonna want these fries even more later.” He never minded driving friends around, especially as winter set in. It was too cold to walk and if he let them mooch off him, then they couldn’t protest when he did the same. Sabrina was willing to share her pot, so it seemed like an equal trade.
"Yeah, sure." Sabrina shrugged. If he wanted to leave already, she didn't mind getting a bag for her fries. She had plenty of snacks at home too, if he got the munchies later. At least her dad wouldn't be home for a while. She started to scoot out of the booth. "Let me go get a box from the counter and the bill and we'll get out of here." Getting high with a friend and forgetting everything else for the night sounded like a plan to her.
